Genrepalooza Presents: FG Radio - Tons of Lithium but very little Chill (13 Viewers)

Round 499.xx

Category: Sports

Song: Magic Johnson

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers

That's two songs about Johnson I've picked in the 500. 23 Beats Off by Fugazi in the Bonus Round was the other. This was just a jock jam beyond jock jams by the guys that wore socks on their jocks.

Round 498.xx

Category: Segue Way

Song: Shoo Be Doo/Candy-O

Artist: The Cars
hi at Rockaction.

i have mentioned this segue in previous threads as being my absolute most favoritest of favoriteadillys.

love the Alan Vega/Suicide rip of the opener, then the blast into the only song ever recorded that could match the gooey delights of that album cover.

we will never see days like those again.

tyvm.

Didn't know that, otb. Well, you're in luck. I linked it!

Suicide has gotten a lot of revisionist love lately. I keep seeing them pop up in places. Only familiar with them from their Rhino New York DiY contributions. Never really sought them out beyond knowing they're loved by punk critics. Think i've tried them out a few times. Never really got beyond the first few tracks. Perhaps like The Damned, they need another listen. Peace, mang.

Oh, and by the way, we at 500!!!! I couldn't help myself. Don't know if I'll be around in the P.M., so I went ahead and broke the seal. Willie Mays would be good synergy with the wikkid thread, which I had something special typed out for, but figured it got too generational for a man who is distinct in his preferences for generations.

And that be that.

i chose their eponympus debut in one of the album drafts, regaling all with tales of how it was passed around as an underground cassette at first, iirc ... they got a TON of love back in the day, as well ... i find them to be the most interesting act behind Ramones & Heartbreakers to come out that CBs scene - nobody ever hit with such ostentatious minimalism - they were a most unique ecosystem.

I wondered when I posted these two whether they were on your list.  I thought Goin' Back must have been based on where it showed up on a playlist of mine (that is, I thought I got it from you based on timing on stuff being added), but I figured Mellow My Mind might not have been.  What I love about Mellow is Neil's terrible vocal.
It's certainly a ... memorable ... vocal. 😆

Captain Grunge made this playlist of the songs from my top 101 that were on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Pdpra7df48gT4M7nfEiUG

Bumping this to the new page. Now including Segue Way and Diamonds in the Rough.

Diamond In The Rough is such a brutal category for me. Most of my songs are coming from my vinyl collection, which sits right next to me, or from memory because a song has burned something into my brain. I have no Excel sheets, and lack any centralized listening database to refer to, like iTunes or Spotify. My taste in music is actually much broader than I've posted this draft, it's just been forgotten, and nothing jogs the memory, really.

So Diamond In The Rough is tough. I don't own any albums I consider to be bad, and albums that I consider to be bad, to me, mean they never have redemptive qualities of any sort. Indeed, if you cut just one good song, I consider the album okay, and not a wasted exercise. So it's tough for me to find a lousy album with a good song on it. And I also have a degree of fidelity to certain acts where I wouldn't consider an album bad yet a song good. With that said, I might have one in mind. Perhaps diamonds off of disappointments is probably the way to go about this. Anyway, those are the musings for the morning.

You can define it however you want.
Oh yeah, I figured that. I was just spitballing over my difficulty with that category. It's probably the only one that I feel like I can't really partake in because it's a bit anathema to how I listen to music. I'm really easy on songwriters if they're doing what they do  earnestly. (For the most part. I do have problems sometimes when a genre or type of music is beholden to an ideology I find to be an affront to me personally, but those and that are few and far between. I would say Death Metal beyond Slayer is like that for me. Just not interested in that outlook on life, and it saddens me.)  It's not even a big deal; I'm just bored at seven A.M. on a Sunday and spitballing away. Heh. Really no big deal, all things considered.

My favorite R.E.M. years is on the I.R.S. label, but they have some good music on the Warner Brothers label, and Automatic For The People is my favorite album from that label.  This is my favorite song off the album, and it happens to be the closer.

Round 499

Find the River - R.E.M.   (Side 2, Track X)

I'm dodging that category. I agree that it's difficult.
I think I would have had an easier time of it when I was younger and wouldn't hesitate to call an effort "bad" or "good". Nowadays, I don't do that so much. But I still don't make habit of listening to bad stuff, so I wouldn't remember regardless of my age.

Anyway, I was just thinking that early in the morning. There are three other categories to choose from, so no skin off of my back.

I kind of want to draft from this category just for the challenge but I also agree with the sentiment that I rarely say an album is bad anymore. I was much more of a snob when I was younger. My snobbish opinions were also flat out wrong and terrible in many cases.

You are preaching to the choir here. My snobbish opinions devalued a lot of stuff that had tremendous value, even life-affirming value. That's something I really wish I could tell my younger self.

Almost everything I have considered for this category is from bands that were in their prime when I was much younger.
And with that...well, there you go, I guess, unless I'm misreading what you're saying. The young, who should be so open-minded, are so stuck with limited knowledge and constraints of their own longings and yearnings sometimes. Sometimes it takes getting older and having a lot less to lose to really form an opinion about anything and to let other things just be.

For me it was easy to just try and pick a good Stones song from the era where they were well passed their prime - but I said right away that was a tough category.

I’m sure if I really put effort in I can think of some, but I havent started putting effort into this yet (it’s shows) so why start now?

Segue Way

Rd 497: Linden Arden Stole the Highlights   and       Who Was That Masked Man by Van Morrison

Linden Arden stole the highlights
And they put his fingers through the glass
He had heard all those stories many, many times before
And he did not care no more to ask
And he loved the little children like they were his very own
He Said, "Someday it may get lonely."
Now he's livin', livin' with a gun

TRANSITIONS INTO

Oh ain't it lonely
When you're livin' with a gun
Well you can't slow down and you can't turn 'round
And you can't trust anyone

You just sit there like a butterfly
And you're all encased in glass
You're so fragile you just may break
And you don't know who to ask

Rd 498: Streets of Arkow       and    You Don't Pull No Punches, But You Don't Push the River by Van Morrison

my favorite 13 minute stretch of Van Morrison. It's not a pure segue musically but it also is a perfect segue. He often plays them live as a medley.

How about that for a 4 song segue way?

Great draft that we have had Schubert, Coltrane, Joni Mitchell, The Ramones, Bruce Willis, Blink 182, John Daly and a song about a detachable penis all taken. How many hours is it all total?

Also the John Daly joke was about hitting the booze hard. Lord knows what else he has done that might make that joke seem pretty bad.

499.k4  Pere Ubu - Humor Me  (Side 2, Track X)

Playing some music last night and checked to see which Pere Ubu songs had been taken.  None?!?!  I mean, someone took a freaking Nickelback song.  Decided I needed to remedy this oversight today, no matter the categories.  This isn't my top song from the record but will do just fine.

Round 500:

Moar Cowbell

A. Still I'm Sad -- Rainbow

They well could have called this instrumental "Concerto for Guitar and Cowbell."

B. Stone Free -- The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Another great performance by Mitch Mitchell.

Side 2, Track X

A. New Way Home -- Foo Fighters

Pretty much everything Dave Grohl had learned up to 1997 is deployed in the powerhouse closer to The Colour and the Shape.

B. Explode and Make Up -- Sugar

One of Bob Mould's best breakup/relationship songs closes the final proper Sugar album.

I would have taken them for art rock. Not even sure what even qualifies as art rock, but darn it, Pere Ubu was making the list.

Fell behind this week for the first time in a long time. My son finished his Air Force tour and came to town to celebrate. It was also Mrs. Eephus' birthday week culminating in a house party on Saturday. Both delivered a jolt to my carefully moderated pandemic times routine. I came through it better than poor little Louis who did a lot of hiding under the bed.

Friday

4xx - Lou Reed - Street Hassle  (Diamonds in the Rough)

Street Hassle is Reed's epic work surrounded by a bunch of mediocrities that range from the annoying (Leave Me Alone) to the cringe (I Wanna Be Black). The title track transcends the rest of the record and its crappy binaural production.

4xx+1 - Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Love Field  (Diamonds in the Rough)

Goodbye Cruel World isn't a terrible album but there's a definite falloff from the seven Attractions records that preceded it. Costello even proclaimed it as their worst album in the liner notes for a reissue.

499.8 or 12  - The Baseball Project - Past Time  (Sports Ticker)

Baseball themed supergroup with Peter Buck, Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey and Linda Pitmon.

So long ago, so long, pastime, are you past your prime?

The Jose, Jim & Johnnie Show: Songs about alcohol and drinking

It would have seemed fitting for me to take The Beatles "The End" in category "This Is The End" and then bowed out of the draft.  Alas, mphtrilogy took it in the drumming category.  Where is that guy, by the way?  Hope all is well with him.
I thought of mph the other day when I saw one of those little dolls like he has near his turntable. He popped in during the spring, and said he was busy with work and other activities.  This draft has lasted through all of the seasons.
