Wait for Me -- Daryl Hall and John Oates
Their 1979 album X-Static is a hot mess, which is particularly baffling given that there are very strong albums on either side of it (1978's Along the Red Ledge and 1980's Voices). It's been called their disco album, but most of the tracks sound more like overproduced New Wave. By far the best thing on it is the single Wait for Me, which has a melody strong enough to cut through the nonsense. Even then, it may have been too slick for their liking; when putting together the compilation Rock & Soul Part 1, H&O decided to represent Wait for Me with a live version.

I was having a hard time getting on the site when I was in dark mode theme. Something is wrong with their dark theme. It took a long time for me to get on long enough to change it to the default, but it finally worked. I can get on the site now, except at first it tells me I am offline, but when I hit retry or reload it works.

God, I hate their politics, but they were something else. The White Panther party. Free John Sinclair! (That I agree with. He was doing like ten years for a minimal amount of weed, IIRC. Just ridiculous political targeting by the government.)
But the Motor City Five. What a ####### band. I think when wikkid goes on about generations and how Millenials or Gen Z -- or Gen X, even, couldn't produce a band like that, he's right. They should be Exhibit A in his arsenal. Instead, we get a whole cosmic ####ton of Exhibit Bs. That's not to rip on wik. That's just a dispassionate criticism of his criticism.
@wikkidpissahDon't take it as a rip on you, take it as a compliment. That you could have at least summoned thought about yourself and your critique some eight thousand miles away is a good thing.

I almost picked this, but when I read the lyrics it was less about the Netherlands playing soccer in the seventies and more of everyone sociopolitically getting together to reject certain strains of thought in America. Regardless of what you think of their program (pogrom?) it was less sporting that way. And the blank Tom Brady is likely because he and Kraft and Belichick were seen as sporting progenitors of a certain red hat, which they all wore at first.
I found the song rather arrogant and off-putting, actually, once I realized what it was about. But I begrudge them nothing. If the only way I could issue a clarion call to all the erstwhile classical liberals out there was through musical expression, I suppose I would, though the word "total" in anything politically-themed or named immediately sends my Spidey senses aflutter and almost tilted.
But ahem on my end. Back to the countdown!

One of the books I've had the most pleasure reading (drunk, as F. Scott would have appreciated) ever. F. Scott was ahead of the game with that book in so many stylistic, emotional, and insightful ways. He was a little bound by the imperfect psychiatry of the time (isn't it always?), but managed to turn the events of the novel into universal observations, little affected by psychiatry or its seeming dominion. He moved it away from mere discipline into the unique realm of human emotion and long-standing philosophy and yearning. And his criticism and prognostication of what would happen in modern society through the coupling at the end is something to behold.
Be interested to hear the song.
