Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

@Zegras11 Killer choice today, this live Detroit version of Pictures of You is striking. Consider me moved.
gotta give @Hawks64 credit for that Live Detroit Spotify post. That is a killer version as are many from that Detroit live.

I had given K4 this link from when I saw them in Boise. Also a great listen.(but not on Spotify)

Smith still sounds pretty good, but damn does he look scary now. Like Michael Myers (the Halloween one) in drag.

Toaday's favorites:

scorchy: Pink Flag (r1) (29 Nov 1999 Version) – Wire

shuke:

The Whole Of The Moon – The Waterboys
(duplicate – second vote)

I took this at #98 in my top 1000 thread. If I redid it today, it would be much higher. I feel like I just talked about this recently, maybe I did when it was picked before in this thread. But this song has a weird nostalgic feel to it for me, like it was in every great 80's movie. But I don't think it was in any. It's definitely in my top 10 "feel good" songs.

I ended up down a Coldplay rabbit hole tonight and while I'm not going to play spolier with anyone I'm still withholding anyway - just in case. I'm just saying I was wrong. While I said I was stuck on 3 it's way more than that. And listening I'm starting to wonder if this is just my generation's U2.

Yes, I posted your link when I put the selections up this morning.

I haven’t heard a ton of Coldplay over the years, but what I have heard I’ve liked quite a bit. Definitely a band I need to explore more.

I just went to bump Eephus's post from yesterday or the day before when he linked a version of the song when they played it for a kindergarten class, but now I see you already "liked" that post. So maybe that's why you had it in mind.

I just found it, it was when I posted it in the "this is their best song" draft. But that was like 15 months ago. Here is what I said:

Another song that just elicits some weird feeling from me. A mix of exuberance, sadness, and nostalgia.

I feel like this was in played near the end of every feel good 80's movie, but don't think it was ever actually in anything.

I have a weirdly similar reaction to this song. Like a nostalgia without anything specifically associated. Love that song, though, and that video Eephus posted made me feel that even more.

Definitely some new things to discover this time around, as the unknowns (like the temperatures) climb out of single digits.

I knew this :-). I just wanted to give 80's the link in case he wanted to hear that one also.

Just reading through the thread today. Would just like to thank @krista4 for the ENORMOUS amount of work and compiling she's done. It would seem prudent to just appreciate the format for what it is rather than complain about count-ups...or really anything. I have been in and out all day so I haven't got a chance to listen to the list, including listening to my own song to further clarify thoughts about it. So I'll just it let stand as a beautiful singer/songwriter song and won't meditate too much on its abstractness.

Also, never thought that the blurb I'd leave about Wire would be considered eloquent, or maybe that was the Pitchfork blurb he was talking about. Or maybe it was krista4's blurb about Chairs Missing. Either way, @scorchy, thanks for that. When you said "1999," I did not see Wire coming down the pike. Good stuff. Stole your thunder by a day, I guess.

Safe travels, man.

My wife needs a lot more sleep than I do, so most days I have a few extra hours to myself before bed.

Thanks, my friend, and others who were kindly posting about this. But it's not about wanting praise for me at all (as kind as that is), but when I spend literally hundreds of hours on this ****, and then people want to come in and criticize....really, I'm just done. And FFS I also am contributing many hundreds of dollars to charity contests when frankly I CANNOT SPARE the money at the moment, but I am.

I just don't get the idea on this ****ing board that every single thing has to be criticized and made to feel not good enough. Actually I read an unrelated post from Dr. O today that I'll bump, because it was amazingly apt to this situation.

I asked if anyone else wanted to run this one, and no one stepped up. If you guys think you have better ideas, then FFS step up and implement them.

We've spoken of another "catch-all" countdown, and I'm here to tell you I will NOT run it, nor will I contribute $1000 of my own money I can't spare to fund it. Whoever wants to do it can at least take solace that they will not have to do vetting, which in itself takes dozens of hours.

This has become one of my new faves from this countdown.

It's a doozy. Lee Mavers and John Powers formed the core of this Liverpool band that were inevitably drawing comparisons to you-know-who, only Mavers's fussiness and perfectionism got in the way of any prolific output. They're a band that had some great songs and performances but will always be more known for the cover of this song by a certain band from Texas that tim apparently idolizes from the teen flicks of the aughts.

LOL.

Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
(new song)

Floyd was the most difficult for me to rank. As someone who's both lamented the fool's errand of ranking art and been one of this board's earlier whiners about over-played classic rock, it was a soul searching exercise to arrive here. 20 some songs were in contention. I'm still getting lost in old interviews and newer documentaries. I realized this is my favorite band. I find them both unique and delicious. They push buttons no other band has. Take me places no other band could. The scene from the movie was an incredible moment the way I first experienced it (front row shroomin'). That was what I thought about. Not the 40 years of being over-played. Geldoff overdosed, the little pin prick, the scream, this music. Terrifying but somehow beautiful. I could go on and on. I could paste Uruk's defense of Stairway. Yup, it's over-played and over-praised, but I'd never criticize someone's Stairway, Baba, or Numb. I wish I ranked it higher. Maybe #1. It's 2am and soaring through my headphones. What a solo. Tone.

I would guess most or all of us feel that way. It's that balance of wanting to the be the one with the story of the song and the spotlight on the song mixed with being happy that other people already know and love the same thing you do.
I am totally surprised at how many people mentioned "Crazy Water". I had no idea people would like it so much. I'm chuffed.

HERE is the link to the #14 Playlist.

@Hawks64 - not trying to step on toes, it just seemed like you had some busy days lately and thought I would help. Also, selfishly I was just excited to get to some good music on my day off. ;)
@krista4 can add it to the second post

I honestly didn't know what to do with the Junkman tune. Not being familiar with it, I just clicked on a version on spotify from a different artist, but let me know what to do with it. @simsarge might have an answer too if there is an OK replacement or just leave it off.

I'll keep posting the daily lists, but really I have no desire to spend another minute of my time with this. Obviously I'll also give you the results of the contests. Great job, guys!
What happened? What did I miss? I was in a 7 hour practice yesterday and only really skimmed here during breaks.

I haven’t heard a ton of Coldplay over the years, but what I have heard I’ve liked quite a bit. Definitely a band I need to explore more.
There's more, but cover to cover ...A Rush Of Blood To The Head and X&Y skipping the hits then you'll know.

I never got the Coldplay hate. They aren't in my heavy rotation, but I generally dig their first 3 albums at least.

After being relatively chalky in the US draft, OH's selections here have mostly been less so, but starting tomorrow every artist he's selected has already shown up on the countdown.
I saw this, started mentally guessing what artists we could see.

Nope, Elvis wasn't one of them - I still suck at this guessing thing.

This is 100% why I start the playlists on my song, hit shuffle, and not look at the songs/artists as the songs change.

I never got it, either. Their songs are melodic and performed well. Not a huge fan of Martin's vocals sometimes, but they are a good band that has some memorable songs.

Within about an hour of time:
- one person “complained” about this format versus a draft and how he doesn’t have time to listen to long playlists
- one person “suggested” that we should have counted up instead of down
- one person gave “spoilers” and pushed back a little

I’m just answering the question as to what suddenly caused krista to throw her hands up in the air - not judging any of the actions above or blaming anyone at all.

In fact theyre all each really innocent posts taken individually and I’m 💯sure none of them meant any harm and none were really criticizing her or this thread - just off the cuff remarks really.

This is a ton of work for krista and that maybe combined with some personal stuff (we all have it) they were just more “bricks in the wall” in her way - and she decided to “tear down that wall” and vent a bit.

I’m sure things will level back out - but if we want to do a third “everything else” thread maybe some one else will need to step up and spearhead it.

I like - although don’t listen heavily to - Coldplay. I like one album a real lot, and some songs off a few others.

I think the problem is they were marketed as “alternatIve” and compared to Radiohead at first - but at heart they’re a “soft” pop band so the alternative fans had to turn their backs on them.

I'll keep posting the daily lists, but really I have no desire to spend another minute of my time with this. Obviously I'll also give you the results of the contests. Great job, guys!
What happened? What did I miss? I was in a 7 hour practice yesterday and only really skimmed here during breaks.

I pushed back on some of those "innocent" posts, and apologize if I escalated any tensions. I'm a bull in a china shop sometimes and don't always take things the way they were meant.

B1tching about the format, though, is a bridge too far for me.......especially when this format has been set for MONTHS. If someone doesn't like it, set up your own damned draft/reveal/whatever.

I'm not busting on you, Doc. I agree with a lot of what you wrote above. Just wanted to clarify my part in this dustup.
