Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

For some reason this is one of my least-favorite Bowie tunes. Maybe because it's too "classic rock" for me?
simey: The Jean Genie - David Bowie

Sorry, I realize these came off as negative. I'm just trying to have a conversation.

The Bowie comment is fair.

Bowie's post-Spiders Rock 'n Roll albums (Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups & Diamond Dogs) didn't break a lot of new ground for him. They were commercially successful: all three albums reached #1 in the UK and he became an international star. He probably could have continued on this path for a while but he made one of his early artistic changes with Young Americans. It was very surprising at the time and alienated some of his fans but he stayed ahead of the trends rather than following them.

I disagree, I think the person who assigns the most points to it owns it. If you really wanted Outdoor Miner you should have placed it higher than OH. Sry.

I agree. It makes more sense the person who ranked it highest owns it. Therefore, I own Bitter Sweet Symphony. MINE MINE MINE!

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Figure It Out (KarmaPolice)
The Cutter (The Dreaded Marco)
Outdoor Miner (Oliver Humanzee)

You are at least the third person to identify this as a new-to-them favorite, when I took it about 20 rounds ago. :lmao: THIS IS MY SONG. MINE MINE MINE.

I take back everything!

Outdoor Miner belongs to K4.
(It even says it's hers right there in the title)

Everyone back to your mining.

We went from dance party to Flowers in the Dirt, and I regretted not getting an Elvis/Paul double by taking a song from this waaaaaay underappreciated record. I urge any regular Paul fans and edgy Elvis fans to check out this record and use my post-Beatles Beatles thread as a guide, or just let me know if you need any suggestions.

Now we've moved to "catch-all" artist Leonard Cohen and Songs from a Room. Also not terribly danceable, but I look forward to discussing.

Not a great movie, but top-flight soundtrack.

Now listening to the Empire Records soundtrack album.

Hate to say it but it's probably not as good as you remembered it. It's mostly bands who haven't been heard from since 1995. The Generation X and Big Star covers are poor.

"There She Goes" - The La's

First got into this in 1990 from my friend who would watch 120 Minutes and Dave Letterman late night. Told me I had to hear this song -- that the band was great. So I checked it out, loved the song, but never quite got into the album, which was a bit too light and jangly/mid-tempo for me at the time. Fast forward about ten years later and another friend is getting into Britpop and tells me about the song and album. Well, the song I know, but the album I don't -- so I give it another chance, and it was awesome the second time around.

My Winwood pick yesterday is also one of those times where I can clearly remember where I was when I first heard it. I wasn’t a big hockey fan but it was probably a Saturday morning and was watching a CBC recap on the Stanley Cup finals. They showed a highlight montage of the Canadians run and the song playing was Back in the High Life Again. I don’t know why but the song really connected with me, at 11 years old but I was transfixed and just felt so good, totally uplifted. Even though I didn’t care about the Canadians, I really felt the jubilation of their win.

I remember asking my dad about the “Back in the High Life Again” song was and telling him how great it was. A couple days later my dad surprised me with the Winwood album on cassette. I wore that thing out. That still is my go to celebration song.

"Ready, Steady, Go" - Generation X

Okay, so it was number thirty-one but I never wrote it up. Pure pop-punk perfection about a Top Of The Pops-styled show, IIRC. Jolly and good.
There's a whole treasure chest of old Ready Steady Go performances on YouTube. Most of it seemed to be lip synched, but still cool to watch so many artists in their youth.

ETA: and speaking of youth, Gen X performing the tune on TOTP in 1978

"Outdoor Miner" is a fantastic track, and one I considered.

See, k4? I know you're kidding, but you did get at least a comment and an affirmative nod about Wire's "Outdoor Miner" track back on Page 94. I'd considered both that and "Heartbeat" off of Chairs Missing, but I went with Side 1, Track 1, Album 1 instead.

In addition to Billy Idol, Generation X also featured a band member who went on to temporary punk success in the mid-80's.

Also... Back In The High Life is MINE!

And in a strange twist of fate (is that spotlighting?) this is the song that just came up on me current playlist. So I may be joining you in Earworm City.

Not spotlighting.

I think.

I don't even know what spotlighting is for this draft. The bands and songs are already in. You'd have to highlight your own future picks to be spotlighting or breaking any unwritten rule.

But yes, come join me. I've been using my own playlist to get it out of my head.

There IS a Prince version of NC2U.

I'm not a big Prince fan to begin with but... I thought it would be better. I would have liked to hear him sing it in the stripped down style that Sinead did.

In other news, I added Long Tall Glasses and She Does It Right to my Liked list. The playlists seem to be getting better - yes I'm way behind in the listening of these lists. This is a LOT of music.

Back To Black is the best Winehouse song I've heard. Can't say I'd seek it out, but neither would I turn it off were it to play somewhere.

Happy When It Rains is pretty good but it that's only because it's practically identical to their most famous song.

You're skating on thin ice here, bub.

I know you're kidding, but I have no Thumper Rule in effect for hockey. I loathed those Red Wings teams. I disliked Scotty Bowman. I could have done without the former Russians. The whole Brendan Shanahan/everybody else thing made me sick as a former Whalers fan (Shanahan had forced his way out of Hartford with a trade demand. The Wings got a perennial forty-goal scorer. The Whalers got Keith Primeau). In addition to Lidstrom, the only likable guy was Stevie Y, and that wasn't enough to pull for them.

Just a dislike of that team, though years have dimmed the hatred and muddied the waters as to why.

I didn’t expect to see Roger Waters making news for controversial statements made to the UN on Russia’s behalf being a headline I would ever read.

That has been an interesting development. I don't know how to remain apolitical talking about it, so I will cease.

In recent years some of the most highly respected artists in this thread have offered some very questionable political opinions:

Roger Waters
Van Morrison
Eric Clapton
Morrisey

I still love their music (well the first 3 anyhow) but man have they gotten weird.

The years have not dimmed the hatred for me. :hot:
