Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

That is awful. I lived in Orlando when those murders happened. Didn't school just start for the Fall semester at UF? I remember my Aunt (who worked at UF) saying that some parents were pulling their kids out of school.
Yep. They happened in August of my freshman year. After the fourth and fifth murders, UF canceled classes for several days - I went to stay for a weekend at my cousin's house in Jacksonville. Still feels like it happened just yesterday - get chills just typing about it.
Very scary and sad. I remember Aileen Wuornos was still killing men around that time too.

I just realized I'm eating BBQ tonight, and I'm pulling for the Chiefs. There will be Unique Splits pretzels there, and they come from PA.

My guess for final score is Chiefs 27 - Philadelphia 33. I don't know if the Chiefs will be able to contain Hurts. We'll see.

good Elton John song about Philadelphia
Nothing to do with Philadelphia (actually love the City) but that’s one of the few Elton songs I’d skip over if it did show up on a playlist. Apologies to anyone that has it Top 4.
My father-in-law hates it too. I can't recall any other time he spoke up to skip during a shuffle, but he did with this one.
Not sure why exactly - maybe it sounds too much like a song that would be in a tourism commercial?

It probably reminds him of The Eagles

I believe it's known as a "gay pride" anthem. NTTAWWT

"The Kids Are Alright" - The Who

Somehow the opening strum of a chord (foreshadowing) and the charmingly antiquated notion of "I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl" was enough for me to select this one as my Who representative for the exercise. I like the breakdown and Townshend's harmonics during the part of the song where Daltrey sings "I know if I go things would be a lot better for her/I had things planned, but her folks wouldn't let her." The title of the song, "The Kids Are Alright" is itself, away from the lyrics of the song, a very catchy rallying cry for the youth or kids of any age, and as we/you probably know, has caused lots of spin-offs and riffs upon its declaration about said kids.

I meant tourism in Philadelphia, not alternate lifestyles.

The Rolling Stones and The Kinks with the quadruple-ups today! And Led Zeppelin also gains ground on The Beatles with a triple-up.

Phil Collins had the Deja Vote today, and...
Clearly the 4 household has a favorite Kinks song.

I guess so! We ended up with three songs in common, and two of them (the two he sniped me on) were surprises to me. Actually the one I own ("Outdoor Miner") was sort of a surprise as I knew he would consider a lot of Wire songs.

So :hot: at OH for stealing/owning my Kinks song yesterday. I was sure he would take "The Village Green Preservation Society." Jerkface.

Get in line.

I mean "Get in Line" (it's happen to me a few times) for having someone "take/own" a song a round or two before you took it; even though you are essentially giving it more love by assigning higher points, so you should "own" it - but I don't want to start ****.

A Well Respected Man - The Kinks

This will be way too long so apologies in advance.

I’ve talked about how I’m not huge on lyrics - my MO is either I don’t really care or even know all the lyrics OR I really enjoy them and they have great meaning to me. Little room for in between for me most of the time.

We’ve also talked about music as art. I’m also not one that gets a lot of art. Especially interpretation and meaning with art (read: paintings, sculptures, etc.). I typically like or don’t like an art piece. But with music I have a much greater appreciation for what goes in to it and what the musician is going for.

So, the song I picked today has great meaning to me and I basically ignore what is the accepted meaning of the lyrics and the satire The Kinks were going for. Making fun of the aristocracy and highest levels of life in the UK with their prim and proper ways. I get it’s great social commentary from them. But I interpret this piece of art quite differently.

I grew up one of four cousins on one side of the family and one of five cousins on the other. And I was the youngest on both sides. From the earliest I can remember I was always told by all those cousins that I got unfair or special treatment - probably a common refrain for the youngest. But somehow my mother did a great job with me and despite being a moron and having my own issues, I managed to navigate my early years without getting in to any of the trouble that all the other cousins did.

And I came good, as they say - not that my family was that poor, although we had little money and little family foundation. Lots of divorces, some of those cousins being in jail and the grandfathers on either side being dead or estranged. From the time I graduated HS and got in to Georgia Tech I was seen as the patriarch for the family on both sides. But this isn’t a LOOK AT ME - as I said, I have my own issues and insecurities. But, I’ve had a wonderful life - love my wife and four kids more than anything. I’ve made a good living and never wanted for anything.

For 30 years I’ve gotten up and been at work by 9 and did what I was supposed to do, conservatively. I take pride in that and have small dread for it all at the same time. But it’s a lot of ****ing pressure.

But nobody should be crying for me and that includes myself. My life has been fantastic- I wouldn’t trade with anyone. My family loves and respects me and the pressure I feel at times is natural but also self-inflicted.

So, a well respected man? Yeah, most days I like to think I am.

That's a very interesting take on it and sort of a wonderful one. Don't kid yourself, man - you get the piece of art. You know what it's about. Yet you're able to take a satirical jab and apply it to yourself while saying, "Yeah, that's what I do and I have no problem with what they're satirizing."

Good for you. We should all be so conservative.

I remember one of my friends told me something fairly subtly but with intent. He said that reputation is the most important thing you have in this world. The only thing within your control is your reputation. How you act, how you comport yourself, the way you treat others.

I see no problem with being a well-respected man about town. Chances are, other peoples' esteem is a good marker to the measure of the man. Most of the time. There are times where it utterly and spectacularly fails, making room for the satirist or the cynical. But for the most part, these things mean something good in an ordered and decent democratic society.

*eta I edited this. He told me also that politics was perception, but that in politics, perception was reality. I edited the "perception" out of reputation, because that was a different conversation. He also told me once, while we were sitting around playing intellectuals that "You know, T, freedom's just another word." I looked at him really quizzically because he didn't have a relativist bone in his body. He then continued "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."

I was in hysterics after that. I mean, I laughed for a good few minutes.

I used to run marathons and always trained for the Houston marathon, the closest major marathon to me here in SWLA. I ran it five times. They would have bands along the marathon route and in 2011 or 12, when I approached mile 23, the band was playing this song. Mile 23 is the low point mentally when running a marathon, you aren't quite to the home stretch and the adrenaline that kicks in to get you across the finish, but you have progressed to the point where everything hurts and you wonder why the hell you are doing this to yourself. It's always been a favorite song and it quickly gave me a brief mental lift. I finished that race in 4:17. The next year, at the same location the same band was playing the same song! I again had a big mental boost and finished in 4:16. A couple of years later, I ran it for the final time and when I reached that spot, the same band was there, only this time they were playing Layla. I knew I was ahead of schedule and finished in 4:02.

I cannot hear the song without associating it with mile 23! It brings back great memories of my time as a runner and how much those marathons meant to me. I no longer run marathons, apparently you need cartilage for that (who knew?). I'm going to get a new left knee soon and I'm told I also will eventually need a new right knee and a new left hip. I'm going through joints like Snoop Dogg when he visits Willie Nelson's tour bus!

Sorry to hear about that. I know that's not the thrust of your post, but it's still a scary thing to have to go through.

I am here to admit I really whiffed on The Kinks. I knew all their big hits, and now I'm deep diving. I'm a little embarrassed that it's taken me this long to realize how great they are. Please forgive me.

If the thread makes a Kinks fan out of you, I feel it's all been worth it.
Like I've said a few times in this thread, I love the Kinks. It's sacrilege around these parts but I've always liked them more than the Beatles and Stones :scared:

They were my first concert back in '82 or '83 at the Seattle Center Arena. The Kingsmen (of Louie Louie fame were the opening act). My cool uncle, who is only 12 years older than me, took me.
