Time Has Told Me - Nick Drake
(duplicate – third vote)

Taxman is a song I don’t think I get the mass appeal of. It’s a good song, nice little critique but of all the amazing Beatles songs, it never stood out to me as special. It does sound different so maybe that’s the appeal? Then again I really like Why Don’t We Do It in the Road so what do I know?

Outstanding bass part and guitar solos by Paul are what draw me in.

When looking through YouTube at Beatles videos ... have any of you run across the thumbnail of the "Still Think I Suck?" video about Ringo Starr's drumming? The actual title is "My Drummer Said That RINGO Sucks, So I Dared Him To Play THIS Beatles Beat!"

I kept seeing that thumbnail of Ringo leaning over and taunting "Still Think I Suck?" to all the rando drum wannabes out there. I finally just watched it, and it's really a nice bite-sized layperson's introduction about one of the sneaky-good aspects of Ringo's drumming. Although I doubt the two songs they used will be picked here, I'll not mention them to prevent spotlighting.

Just that ... if you ever saw that thumbnail and wondered about that video ... it's worth the seven minutes.

Thanks for this! Haven't watched the video but will. I was actually going to bring up Ringo today in my thoughts about my own pick, "Time Has Told Me" by Nick Drake. And as you guys have probably gathered by now, Ringo's solo career was shut out of our rankings. IIRC one of Doc Oc's idiots chose a song of his, though?

simey:

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) - The Rolling Stones
(new song)
What's that I hear? It's Billy Preston kicking off that totally groovy intro, with Charlie Watts giving a bang on the drums for Mick Taylor to join in on guitar with his wah-wah pedal. I love it, and I love those horns too. The best Doo Doo song ever. This song rotates with two others as my favorite Rolling Stones song.

Thoughts on Calvary Cross

-- This one is the Thompsons’ “Cortez the Killer”. Super simple 3 chord progression (F Am G) upon which the band can make a 3-minute song or build a 20-minute wall of destruction. I love every live version of this song I’ve ever heard.

-- The lyrics are evocative, yet open-ended. I think the song is about the implacable inevitability of death. Perhaps to you it is about baseball or dog slobber.

-- For all of the jabber about who the “best” guitarist is, you can all stop flapping your dorksuckers about it because I’m here to tell you that it is Richard Thompson. It just is. Technically perfect master of just about every “folk” style imaginable (listen to the speed at which he delivers those little arpeggiated flourishes in “Vincent Black Lightning”) as well as a deeply expressive electric guitarist who can use feedback, distortion, and other signal enhancements to great effect. It’s like having Merle Travis and Neil Young in the same band, and that band is one guy, and that guy is this guy, Richard Thompson.

Pip’s Invitation:

Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin
(new song)

If I had to use one word to describe my #1 Zep song, it's relentlessness. It's basically the juggernaut of intensity that is Immigrant Song stretched out for more than 10 minutes. (There are those long songs again.) Every second of this pushes all of my brain's musical pleasure buttons. And John Bonham delivers one of his most epic performances in a career full of them.

This song was very influential on the then-emerging genre of prog metal, and likely the members of Iron Maiden were paying close attention. This may explain why I have reacted well to the new-to-me Maiden songs in this countdown.

That it didn't get played to death on AOR and classic-rock radio (probably due to its length) has helped keep it fresh for me.

As with Fools Gold, the song title is missing an apostrophe and it drives me crazy.

Well, OH stole my Richard Thompson thunder. I had intended my post about "Time Has Told Me" to cover the contribution of Richard Thompson to this song. My favorite part about Ringo's drumming is that he is always in support of the song. He adds to it in often subtle ways rather than going on extended solos or the like. "In My Life" and "A Day in the Life" are perfect examples of his loving approach to the songs. I feel the same way about Richard Thompson's electric guitar part in "Time Has Told Me." There's nothing flashy, but it is perfection in terms of accentuating the lyrics and the acoustic guitar part. Imagine dropping Eric Clapton in to do something like that (hint: he couldn't). Thompson doesn't have to make himself front and center; instead together he and Nick Drake crafted the perfect song.

I can't say I expected to see your #1 Nick Drake be listed higher than your #1 solo Beatles. (Anyone who has been reading your posts, which is almost none of us, should be able to predict what your #1 overall is.)

Will your #1 Leonard Cohen top your catch-all list?

I didn't have it there at the beginning and am still not sure the order of my top three is correct, but here we are. If I were doing a "real" list of my favorites, my top five would be two Beatles, two George Harrison, and this song.

Mrs. Eephus:

Love Like Blood - Killing Joke
(new artist)

Love this pick. It was on my list for a week but I decided that I was being too 80s. Another Kroq staple from those good times. It ended up in my Casey Kasem top 40. On Spotify it was followed by another in my top 40, my missing Echo and the Bunnymen. Me and Mrs Eeph would get along fine. Many of y'all can out 60s, 70s and 90s me, but few can out 80s me. Mrs E can tho.

The entire film of Gimme Shelter, featuring the Altamont concert and its aftermath, is available free on YouTube. It’s worth watching for the performances alone (especially Tina Turner.)
This was an enjoyable book if you ever want to delve into more of the details about Altamont.
Sounds great; I’m putting it on my list. I’m currently reading the Led Zeppelin bio by Bob Spitz.

I think @Andy Dufresne is happy to see them appear as well.

The beat and the guitar solo are what do it for me. Those were enough to make it my #11 Beatles song. That wouldn't have changed regardless of what George was singing about.
Taxman is one of those songs that has grown on me over the years. Being the opener on Revolver it plays a sizable role in the Beatles transformation from poppy love songs, to all that came after...... always liked the bassline too......and Ive also grown more fond of Harrison's contributions as time goes on. Honestly, he probly shouldve been allowed more contribution, but Paul and John's egos..

Another reason it's grown on me is cuz the older I get, the more I'm irritated with taxes.....excuse me while I go yell at the kids on my lawn.

I think this was my #2 in the Zep countdown. I love this song. And yes, that galloping, driving bass is definitely a Steve Harris (Maiden) trait.

Hey, I missed that! Yeah, I've mentioned this to a couple posters. Surprised it took this long for them to show. Good choice of song, too.

Known-to-me favorites from #2, not including my own pick or Gimme Shelter, which I did not pick 4 times but which I did rank #4.

Time of the Season -- The Zombies (Landryshat)
Here Comes the Sun -- The Beatles (Hov34 )
Can't You Hear Me Knocking -- The Rolling Stones (Manster)
Dear Mr. Fantasy -- Traffic (Doc Oc)
No Quarter -- Led Zeppelin (Zamboni) -- my #3 Zep song. My friend did not rank it.
Won't Get Fooled Again -- The Who (Andy)
Kashmir -- Led Zeppelin (Yankee23Fan)
Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) -- The Rolling Stones (Simey)
Bad -- U2 (Chaos34 and Marco)
Pride (in the Name of Love) -- U2 (Doug B)
Waterloo Sunset -- The Kinks (Eephus)
Comfortably Numb -- Pink Floyd (KarmaPolice)
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -- U2 (DrIanMalcolm)
Time -- Pink Floyd (Shuke)
Ace of Spades -- Motorhead (Sullie)
Over the Hills and Far Away -- Led Zeppelin (Higgins) -- my #22 Zep song. My friend ranked it #5. Kind of surprised it didn't surface until now.
Fool in the Rain -- Led Zeppelin (Simsarge)
Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You -- Led Zeppelin (AAABatteries and MAC 32) -- this was one of my last out in the Zep rankings, which means it's probably in my top 30. My friend did not rank it.
Wild Thing -- The Troggs (Cosjobs) -- Another one that I expected to see before now.
Moonage Daydream -- David Bowie (Binky)
Freedom! '90 -- George Michael (Scorchy)
Heroes -- David Bowie (Mister CIA)

Only five songs I don't recognize by title today, which was probably to be expected.

I can give you some Neil Young recommendations if you need...

Dr. Octopus:

Dear Mr. Fantasy - Traffic
(duplicate – second vote)
When the other Dr. took this song he called it the "Chalkiest" of Traffic songs. I can't really argue with that as it's an iconic song, that (as Dr.Ian also pointed out) was the opening theme to the biggest Marvel movie of them all. Lets just say I entered the theater pumped to see Endgame, and hearing the opening notes to Mr. Fantasy play was like stepping on the top of the gas pedal to get into passing mode while already going 80 miles and hour.

A Traffic set from 1972 was shown on MTV on occasion in its early years. The version of Dear Mr. Fantasy that ends it is
