Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (2 Viewers)

I'm still awaiting a reply from the selector of this, but in the meantime I wanted to alert the group of an issue with Jamiroquai. Sola Akingbola, born in Nigeria, was a member for some period, and I haven't found anything that would put him into an exception. For now they'll go on the "partially ineligible" list.

So I started researching and listening

Nice. I think the only hip hop on my list is a woman. There might be another, but I'm leaving out a song like. . .say. . .by The Yardbirds (because we just talked about them), and that's awfully tough to justify the grime guys or any other British hip hop guys or gals over that aside from the one I picked.

The one I picked just earned the Mercury Prize, by the way, so if you want to research another rapper, start there (I don't want to spoil too badly for casual readers). Just a legendary modern album.

I thought he was a solo act. I remember watching an episode of a Jamie Oliver cooking show, and he had Jamiroquai on as a guest. It was just one guy.

Or is it an Alice Cooper/Manfred Mann thing?

EDIT: I guess Jamiroquai is a band. Why the frick did Jamie Oliver call Jay Kay "Jamiroquai"?

There are entire scenes where the Brits have little to no presence, which makes the winnowing process a little easier IMO. But still hard.
Yeah, there is that. The major artists have such a high concentration that it's hard to chop them down a lot, but on the other hand, the jazz, funk, R&B and hip hop scenes are completely out of the picture here, much to their detriment.

Hot Chocolate jumped to mind. I love Every 1's a Winner. Ineligible though - singer was born in Jamaica.
Technically, isn't Jamaica a British Isle?

On another note, I just ordered a vinyl LP box set from one of the artists I chose. It should have been a whole lot more expensive, but I got a good deal on it. I'm thrilled to have it. A beautiful singer/songwriter departed too soon.

😢

Technically, isn't Jamaica a British Isle?

Oh my. If it is, I go back to the drawing board and 1/4 of my list gets re-done. Seriously.

As discussed ad nauseam here and in the prior thread, we're not including colonies or protectorates. See post #1.

@rockaction was talking about hip hop picks for this, I believe. Off the top of my head, I couldn't name a UK hip hop artist, so it got me thinking. Then I looked at a list of the greatest from the UK and I knew ONE artist. So I started researching and listening..... and that is damn near the only thing I've been listening to for a few days. Rap music and British slang/accents?? Why hasn't this been in my life until this week????

I might actually take a song or two.

I have a list from someone that includes a few hip-hop artists. They're out there!
What are they rappin about? Tea, and blood sausage?

Despite our best efforts, we are currently running at 40% success in having lists submitted that are fully eligible. Please vet carefully. Please.

Oh, and The Waterboys have had approximately 10000 members over the years. Some of them are ineligible, but I'm not going through right now to list them all for you, but have added a generic "partially ineligible" for them. Please check this artist carefully.

I'm not sure who the waterboys are, but after this post i'm not interested in finding out, if you know what I mean

I think their most famous song might be this one? I don't think it's going to be up your alley.

Yea, I watched about 30 seconds.....I'm good. Something about mooning a chick......weird.

As far as I can tell, the first three albums are eligible along with almost all of Fisherman's Blues. Jay Dee Daugherty plays drums on a handful of Waterboys tracks making them ineligible.

They're another band like Aztec Camera with Mike Scott taking the name and singer/songwriter duties.

Jay Lee Daugherty is the issue I saw, and since he was listed as a "member" at the time of that album, all of it is ineligible whether he played or not.

Musical Youth is fully eligible. All were born in Birmingham.

I have fifty-one different bands listed. How on Earth are you people having a problem here?
I have the opposite reaction. I feel like either I am missing a bunch, or just have wildly different tastes in music. I only have 24 in my playlist right now and 5-6 are were just random clicks as I went through and wasn't super sold on the ideas. I might have to triple up on artists' songs at this rate.
It seems like 80% of the artist/bands in the 80s were British - maybe concentrate on “songs” more than “bands”.

I’m obviously taking plenty of songs by bands I love but maybe 1/5 of my list are songs I love by bands that I haven’t really ever dug deeply into despite loving that particular song or when/if I did, nothing else really stood out for me.
I had that exact thought today.

Some of it is a mental block that I have doing these. There are songs that I do like by bands like The Beatles, but I won't take them because they aren't in my rotation things that I normally gavitate to so it feels a bit fake for me to take them, if that makes sense. My favorite things about the movie and music threads are seeing what other people love and reading their posts about their connections to a medium I love. So I try probably too hard to find "KP brand" picks when doing these. So I think between that and just generally not listening to hardly any New Wave before the last few years and not digging punk much - it seems to wipe out a ton of songs and bands that I see when looking and thinking about it.

I am sure digging will reveal more options. If not? Hey - you guys get multiple posts and songs about Radiohead and a couple others.
If it makes you feel any better about your knowledge of Brit music, one song on my list is something I hadn't heard of until you picked it in another thread.

JDD only played drums on one track "And a Bang on the Ear"

As I mentioned already, he was listed as a member. This is Wiki, so it could be wrong. If there are liner notes to show he wasn't, let me know.

I'm still awaiting a reply from the selector of this,
The Selecter? Their early records are ineligible. Per this page: https://nostalgiacentral.com/music/artists-l-to-z/artists-s/selecter/

The band had a geographically diverse background. Guitarist Commie Amanor was originally from South Africa. Bassist Charley Anderson, keyboard player Desmond Brown and drummer Charley ‘H’ Bembridge were all born in Jamaica. Vocalist Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson grew up in the West Indies. Only guitarist and founder Neol Davies and frontwoman Pauline Black were natives of Coventry, where the ska revival began.

Because his producers didn't brief him properly?

That does warm my heart. And it does make me think that I might have been JUST talking about you in my PM, but in a reverse scenario. I guess we will see in about 2 months!!

Tonight was a fruitful research night. I am at 33 songs in playlist. Next step is to obsessively listen to it for a few days and decide a bit how to rank them and decide what needs to be replaced.

I have a few lists with mostly stuff I know, but with some good new stuff, and then 1-2 lists with a lot of new-to-me. I know this one seems more difficult, which is shocking as I expected it to be easy, but I feel like it will be well worth it! Should be a lot of fun.

The cat's long been out of the bag, but imagine how much less work it would have been for Krista if the criteria for US bands was "based in the US" and the criteria for British Isles bands was "based in the British Isles."

I was thinking today how nice it will be to get to the catch-all "everyone else" countdown, but then thought that might mean I'd have to vet to make sure they weren't eligible for this one and the last one. :lmao:  At least we'd have these nice lists of ineligibles to start with.

Stop it right now.

We are way to nerdy and obsessive for that b.s.

I do think that @Dr. Octopus 's group, whom I blame for all this  , likely set it up this way so there weren't disputes about what "based" meant. It's probably better to have a bright line, even if it's a huge ****ing pain in the *** and fuzzy around the edges in this countdown in particular.

To make it easier on you I could just paste the top 31 songs from my Neil Young countdown. Though that will suck for Spotify playlist purposes.

The credits for each song on Fisherman's Blues were in the linked Discogs post.

I don't know why I'm doing this. That album isn't on my longlist :bag:

I understand that regarding song credits. Again, that has not been my point. It is that he is listed as a member of the band for the period including that record. What is on a particular song credit makes no difference.

I don't see the benefit for either of us to belabor and go 'round yet again on this?

yes, very fuzzy

fuzzy wuzzy.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to be a jerk! What I've been trying to get across is that band membership, not credits on a particular song, is what matters. Take, for instance, "Yesterday" by the Beatles. Paul McCartney is the only Beatle on the song, but if Ringo were from Dubuque, Iowa, then (1) the song would be ineligible as it was on a Beatles record, and (2) that would be very amusing.
