Getcha passports ready - the middle-aged dummies are going to the British Isles! Top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

. I have no clue what this is.
I’m very curious as well. I’m sure it will be obvious when it’s revealed - maybe it’s my guess in the contest.
I suspect it’s a Stone’s song.
I keep going back to thinking most of the "Big 3" having a wide variety of songs that are popular here. I am having a hell of a time with the contest question because of that - having trouble thinking of any of their #1 with a bullet type of song.
The reason I’m guessing the Stones is that I think they have fewer obvious choices than the other two.

I’m probably wrong.

well ...if there's anything for certain ...

we KNOW that's true.

bookmakers won't take it.

How bout concert wishlist?
Foo Fighters
Elton John
Paul McCartney
Stevie Wonder
Ah, that would be a fun one as well.

Another I just thought of would be Muse. I don't love much of their new stuff, but I guarantee the show is still worth it.
I have a buddy that is a fan. Saw them at a festival in Germany 15-20 years ago. Fun show. Saw Anthrax there as well.
Anthrax opened for Muse? That's a weird paring. ;)

yeah, try Bob Seger opening for Kiss m'fer ...
That sounds amazing.

How bout concert wishlist? As someone who is crowd averse, it's got to be someone I really want to see ...

Melvins.....one of those bands that I think live is waaaay better than albums

Elder.....they made it Portland last August and I couldn't make it, dang it!

Truckfighters....really cool Swedish band

The Dead South....I think they would be really fun

Tool....I've had chances, but I've never done it....yea, I suck

And if I could go back in time to see one band it would be Pink Floyd with Waters, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright.
This is one that go back and forth on. On one hand, they are one of my favorite bands and I think it would be cool to cross them off my list of concerts. On the other hand, their tix have been quite pricey the last couple times there's been a show near us, and I know the reputation of them just standing and playing and Maynard largely singing in the because it "should be about the music". Can't convince myself it would be worth the 100s of dollars.

My wishlist would start with something like Maiden and Pearl Jam. Two of my favorite bands, but I've never seen either. PJ is a bit because they grew on me later in life, their tix are also crazy expensive and I sort of feel like I've seen them 100s of times live because of how accessible they are with their fans and how many live shows I've seen and heard of theirs. For Maiden, embarrassingly I think it's because I've thought something on the lines of "these dudes are ancient, probably not going to be able to bring it live anymore, etc.. ". I've been thinking that for 20+ damn years, and each year I just see more and more posts about how they are still just as great live and indeed still do bring it.

Others at the top would be The Black Keys, Dinosaur Jr, Run the Jewels.
Also for how amazing it was and how great the show sounded, I will be trying to catch Opeth any time they are within about a 10hour drive radius. I need to catch them again.
Both Tool and Pearl Jam are worth the price of admission. I  felt the former for several days after. I was still shaking at the office next day. I have never heard sound like I heard that night. And that was just before covid. Pearl Jam is the best show I've ever seen. It was 6 years ago, but they were old then too.

Same festival, Anthrax was on a side stage. Nickelback was there too. Yes, I’ve seen Nickelback in the flesh, you jelly?
So have I. But did you see Nickelback for a dollar in a dingy bar?

no but I did see Albert Collins in a very small Dayton, OH punk bar in '78 with no stage on 3 hits of microdot ...

and there were 5 of us ...and we all freaked out about half-way through and spent the rest of the night laughing in our car at the graffiti spray-painted on the brick wall

I've seen Elton 7 times tying him with Santana for whom I've seen the most. #7 was November 17th in Dodger Stadium. The last US stop for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. He's doing 50 some shows in the UK before calling it quits. You should do it. It's not that I am such a huge fan, he's just been very accessible for me. And wow is he as consistent as Petty. So many great songs, it's hard to pick one, and I may choose two.

My big whiffs are Radiohead and Led Zeppelin. Chose Journey over Led Zep one lost weekend in the early 80s. Oof.

Also, agree with Shuke. Would love to see Arcade Fire.

Whoa. I have been too US-centric and didn't think of this. It just so happens that I'm going to be in London/Liverpool at exactly the time he'll have shows in Birmingham, Aberdeen, and Glasgow. I just emailed my BFF, who lives in London, to see if she'd want to go. Her husband is from Birmingham, so maybe they could be convinced to go up (or at least she could, since I really can't stand him). Thank you for mentioning this!!

I had a harder time with him than any other artist in trying to narrow down to one song. I might still change it up and pick a second one.

I saw Arcade Fire at Lollapalooza in 2005, and it's still one of the best performances I've ever seen. That's the Lolla where Anton from the Brian Jonestown Massacre asked me to marry him.
Saw Elton for the first and obviously only time this summer. His final 8 songs or so was the best stretch of a show I've ever experienced. You gotta do it

Emailed my BFF last night with the title "crazy idea?" and she immediately responded that we should go to Birmingham for the show. I looked at tix, and the only ones can get on the primary market are expensive VIP experiences. I don't want to do secondary market in Europe since I don't know how any of it works, so now I am just waiting six days to get into my next credit card cycle to buy them. :bag:

$1 for a concert. $3 for my share of keystones for the night. Living large aged 17!

I saw them in 2019 and last October (and 1983 but that doesn't count for this). They were pretty energized for old guys in 2019, but noticeably more subdued this time. They do have a heck of a stage show with 80's style fire and smoke and all that but Bruce doesn't run too much these days. But they still sound great.

Can’t say that I have. I did check out a song or two though. I remember something about the singer getting heat from the German media for admitting in an interview to wearing hair extensions and he tried to defend himself onstage. That was pretty great.

I've see Elton about 15 times.i Saw him at the first Dodger Stadium show five days after I turned 16, in 1975.

I think the first time was a few years before that at the San Diego Arena.

Best show was at Caesars Palace four years ago on my bday. Did an amazing rendition of Rocket Man, that he performed at the final Dodger show recently.

Have not seen Neil and want to. Had tickets 10 years ago and got sick that day.

He's a bit of an odd one. Very good blues guitarist, not much of a song-writer, more ragged in his approach. But his "I ain't drunk...I'm just drinkin'" is a classic.

I'm gonna get this done today. Rain rain rain. Good day for ranking art, ugh. I've done all I can in this weather on the house project. The next three days are clear skies then another atmospheric river drowns us, so I'll be busy until then.

I keep lowering the ranking of songs which bumps the others so, lather rinse repeat. A fool's errand for sure. Still unsettled on the final 31, but this is getting done today. Period. There I saidf it... to make myself accountable... unless... krista... you are so generous to make a little extension. :)

I saw Dylan at a small 1,500 capacity venue in the late 90s and he was amazing. Was ripping the hell out of a Strat. Maybe my favorite show ever. I've seen him a handful of times in larger venues and he's been less than great each time.
Yeah I saw Dylan play in Lubbock back in '92, as I recall. It was a great show. Closed it out with an extended play of All Along the Watchtower.

Would watch again.

Lubbock, England?

(Still looking for a way to squeeze Sixpence in.)

Bad things happen when you post a responses in two separate tabs at the same time.

No, Buddy Holly Lubbock. And Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock Lubbock.

Last, and nowhere near least - Mac Davis

Been doing a Floyd deep dive and re-listen this week. A couple things good and bad stood out to me doing the exercise.

The bad: just how average to subpar the first 5 albums were for me. Bits and pieces of greatness, but more just uneven albums with some truly unlistenable songs for me.

The good: How ****in' epic the 4 album run of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall was. One thing specifically that stood out was how underrated and amazing the 1-2 punch of Young Lust and One of My Turns is. @krista4 - I might need to change a pick... ;)

Speaking of changing picks...I just had a request to insert a new song on a list I've had for a while and "move everything else down." While I'd love to be accommodating, at this point I would have to make changes and recalculations on five different documents as I have everything sorted into different documents. So if anyone wants changes, a one-for-one is best or whatever affects as little as possible. Exceptions remain if you are one of the last couple of people to have sent lists (rockaction and falguy right now), because I've been busy and haven't input your stuff yet anyway.

About live music, for as much as I love music, watching live music was only a phase for me, from about 1997 to 2001 back in my San Antonio days. I probably hit local venues over 200 times in that span (that's really all i did post-divorce). It was a glorious time, especially dancing with Cheeto Lady and that Spanish-speaking lady we all called Kurt. There were a ton of great local musicians, and we got tons of overflow from Austin. It was so fun, dancing, drinking, and just hanging out with a consistent band of characters. The thought of sitting/standing idly watching a band play does not hold a lot of appeal for me. Aside from the aforementioned Bob Dylan show in Lubbock, I never attended any big name concerts - unless you count The Wailers at a Holiday Inn in Bahrain back in '87.

Warning: I about to hop in the wayback machine and post some links reminiscent of some of my favorite live performances, San Antonio-style. I was not at all these shows, but I could have been (or would have been, and most certainly should have been); top-2 time and place. Not gonna dress up most links with words. Lots of **** I've posted many times, but hopefully some new to y'all's. Just think of this as a box of chocolates.

Sisters Morales   - okay I'll dress this one up. On a first date, and we were nerding out on music, I asked her if she had heard of Sisters Morales, and her response was, "Yeah, they played at my wedding." I'm usually on team brunette, but this make my head explode. Fine Wine ... Whoa

Whoa Exponentially. Discovered this five minutes ago: https://youtu.be/O33u_usQ6AE?t=77

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqsoYdFmi7k - Can you name this FBG?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlS_oGJKVkE - okay, kind of a big name

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tDupnULLEo - Best guitar player I ever watched live, and his keyboard player is a revelation.

https://youtu.be/3kWZYri4ElE - Second-best guitar player I watched live; second best vocalist I've seen live.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5YGY6NCUtM - Prettiest vocals I've ever heard live. Excellent gutar player too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRYnAUE8vdw - I'd be remiss if I did not post Randy Garibay playing with West Side Horns (sub-par audio)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY5yIQWCMzg&list=OLAK5uy_m1mEO1qL2J5uVmuqyfWwiSuDwErjQR7dc&index=15 - can't find any old video clips showing the singer performing 13th Floor Elevators covers, face-first in a puddle of beer. This was THE Tacoland house band.

Take a Walk on the West Side - I fell in love with a drummer's girlfriend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idjXyGxnnlc - Okay this guy was probably in elementary school last time I was in SA, but it's so on brand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO8vBVUaKvk - Makes me think of St. Mary's St.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cABZfkRcQ6A - Only band I saw play live in Austin. It was some kind of 6th St. block party. Passed hard on the shrimp tacos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plRITWcEmkU Heavy "White Chicano" Blues

EDIT: Feeling a bit sentimental about FIVE NBA championships

Oh, thank you! You surely don't forget the challenges I presented adhering to the rules with my submissions. In hindsight, I made my 31st pick in haste (the one-pointer) just to be correct.

Look at you! .. a scholar AND a saint.

I have not listened to anything before Dark Side nor after The Wall in decades and have no intentions on changing that again in my lifetime.

The very early stuff is tough to listen to but Meddle is a really good album. A Momentary Lapse of Reason stands out from the post-Wall days.

The entire Pompeii concert was pre-Dark Side stuff. Love this version of Echoes
