Getting my daughter out of NYC (1 Viewer)

I was on the phone today with a high powered consulting firm in NY. Managing partner who works in the city was on. Practice leaders were from the Bay Area. MP says he also is in CA now as he fled the pandemic situation weeks ago.  Working remotely - doesn’t matter. Happy he left

My youngest daughter is there now. Lives in the financial district with her boyfriend. Working from home. Couped up. Hard to get any air. 1st positive in building a few days ago. Wanted her to fly home a month ago but she was sick with a cold and compromised. She’s healthy now. I have room. They can WFH here. Wide open spaces to breathe, walk etc. Cost isn’t an issue. I’ll buy her a ticket for a flight tomorrow. But have to ensure we don’t endanger each other. Airport/flight risk - heck, even getting to the airport is a risk. Nobody in either side has symptoms but no tests either.

Whats the right play here? Any other NYC/NJ FBGs make a clean escape? Advice?

At this point not sure it matters much. She probably should have left when you suggested. I went to NJ shore to my beach house a while ago. I have been back to Brooklyn a couple times but rest of fam hasn’t.

NY thread has a bunch of discussions about people leaving. At this point, probably hard to get out of dodge if they don’t own a car. Though I hear airports are basically empty.

Have her and the boyfriend drive to you.  Not a lot of risk of exposure on a cross country road trip.  Stop and stay in remote areas.

My daughter drove home from Los Angeles when her school went on-line.  Granted only to SLC.

There is a poster here who left. NYC to Florida I believe. He left pretty early on if I remember correctly. Fantasycurse??

You sound like a great parent. Good luck.

@Judge SmailsSmails

We just left last week...also live downtown. We rented a car and drove one way from the city to the MD shore where my MIL had a house.

We ensured that we were symptom free in NYC for min 2 weeks before risking going anywhere else- ended up 3+ weeks when we left. Now that we're here, we're doing a fresh 2 week min isolation, albeit in a house with a yard.

Fwiw...driving was the easiest I've ever seen for this trip. Very few cars on the road (normal amount of trucks)...but only 4 hour trip.

My niece was living in Brooklyn when this went down, working a dumb job. We highly encouraged her to bail, and she did within a day. Ended up flying to SF...said there were very few people on the plane. She's isolated herself at my brother's in Marin for 2 weeks and is now fine.

room enough to self-isolate at your place for two weeks? that would make the most sense in terms of mitigating your (personal) risk to infection.

i think El Floppo spelled it out pretty well above.

An old client and friend had this record for a long time until recently. I'm sure he's wishing he could hit the road...although this is being hit with the dreaded asterisk due to conditions.
Three guys still have it now, right?

Also a good thought...I've been reading that the airports and planes are empty but the airlines are still flying.  Honestly, now is probably the safest time to fly.  I'd still want mask and gloves, and and obviously hand sanitizer.

Dunno...but it's done in teams driving non-stop. Iirc, there was a issue with the guy who broke my friends record...or maybe he was just being salty. I've driven with him in the car he used...hfs. he drove it on NYC streets and highways like it was a motorcycle. I peed.

Cool story El Floppo, never know who we find on this board.  Kind of ironic the article supports the average 103MPH run but poopoo the 106MPH run these guys had.

Thanks Floppo. Yes we have room but it would be bedroom and bathroom isolation on 2nd story. Not perfect but if this goes well into the summer the 2 weeks will be worth it.

Can also set the cannonball run record now, due to light traffic
Seriously.  12-14 hours a day for 3 days would cover it.  Probably there in time for dinner on day 3.
A new record was set on the cannonball run a few weeks back. Something like 23 hours from NYC to LA.  Audi A8 with extra gas tanks in the trunk plus spotters and radios and police scanners along the way. They had to average like 125 MPH, and I'm sure got it up past 150 MPH many times when the coast was clear.

That's incredible.   Average 125 MPH.

I'm out of free NYTimes articles, but see there's one about current interstate driving regulations today...if she goes that route.

ETA...deleware had a mandatory 2 week quarantine for anybody staying there from out of state. We were worried about getting hassled driving through...but no problem. Fortunately our rental car had Kansas plates...we were expecting randon bannins in NY plates.

No advice on the escape from New York plan, but would encourage you to practice social distancing with her (& bf if it’s a package deal) for the first 14-21 days.

Absurd as that sounds, I have a few friends who are forced to do that with their spouse rn. One friend is in her second trimester of her first pregnancy, and her doctor husband stays in the future nursery room. They use separate bathrooms and she disinfects everything after he leaves for work.

Obviously far lower risk for your situation but I’m dead serious. You might think I’m overreacting but IMO they have to assume they’re infected & asymptomatic for the first few weeks they’re at your home. After a couple weeks, not so much.

Regardless, happy for you that she’ll be back soon. Great news for everyone.

Don't quote me on this, but I think somebody broke that cannon ball run record recently. Just spitballing here.
Breaker, this is Roger here. We got a 10-4 on that one, GB. Scene and confirmed.

Vacation? This seems collosally selfish and dumb. Does he at least have a house down there, or did he stay in a hotel or vrb?
He owns a house down there. Was also surprised that he still went. His son is a pilot so maybe the info he got to at least travel was that it would be fine but yea...still surprised that he went

She’s hesitating due to worrying about us, quarantining on both sides of this, etc. Still investigating options - I appreciate everyone’s recommendations.

I would have her come down--you rent a hotel room/extended stay place for her where she can quarantine. Find a place that has a kitchenette and you could even stock it up and have everything ready for her when she gets to you.

I know traffic is way down, but I'd still guess that the risks of driving across the country (accidents, car issues, crime, virus exposure at gas stations/food places, etc.) exceed the risks of flying on an empty airplane and being in an empty airport for a few hours.  At least, assuming one is wearing a mask, frequently washing their hands, not touching their face, etc.

If going cross country, I agree that I think flying is the safer route at this point.

Great idea. There’s a Marriott Residence Inn near us. Could work

Yep.  Particularly when you count the risk of auto accidents, even single-car.   It would take a lot to get me to fly right now......but man, it has to be healthier to be on an empty plane than it is to be in Manhattan.

This a good idea.  If it were me, I would fly.  Less exposure over time.

The only thing that I'd worry about is being asymptomatic and passing the virus. There have been cases of people who never had symptoms but did a test and they have it. It could be 2 weeks is fine, a month? You just hear all kinds of cases. I'd love for my mom to fly here but she's afraid, and afraid of bringing an unwanted gift from WA.

hey, Judge - hope all is well.

my buddy flew out last week, 7 passengers (including him) straight to LAX.

he took some vid of the flight, was surreal seeing so. much. space.   they were free to sit wherever they chose, of course, and nobody was even remotely  in his zip code.

dunno how it's playing out now, but that was a true ghost flight.

your daughter is in the FD, that's one of the least populated areas of downtown, especially with all the WFH schtick during biz hours ... if they've been steadfast, chances are they've dodged thus far.

all the best, hope it works out best way possible for you all.

Maybe just ride it out? If they're healthy and isolated, why rent a car that they don't know where it's been or ride a taxi to the airport and take a chance with a cabbie or stewerdess or whomever is on the plane or meandering in the airport or handling the luggage. What happens if the cab's last fare was asymptomatic, one of them catches it, passes to the bellhop at the airport and then the ticket agent and someone on the plane, etc. They're not going to go "Escape from New York" with the place. Follow the keep yourself clean guidelines to the letter and then some. They'll probably be better off crossing the street for TP, than jaunting accross the country for piece of mind.

Just a contrarian thought, good luck to you and them either way.

personally, I would not take the risk of introducing the virus into a hotel environment.  They can quarantine in your house, and you will just have to help them prepare meals.  Do you have a tent  ;)
