Getting my daughter out of NYC (1 Viewer)

They’re through the worst of it now, probably. If there wasn’t a compelling reason for them to split town a month ago — as many of my NYC colleagues did — I don’t see why it’s worth it now. Things seemed like they’d be really bad, like, people were talking about food shortages and civil unrest.  None of that happened, we are turning the corner, and NY and surrounding areas have seemingly settled into their groove.

All of that to say is it really worth the risk of travel to them, of exposing you to something, or exposing others to something while in transit?  If you or others end up sick and in a hospital, I imagine there will be a whole lot of looking back to and regretting this decision....

Mission accomplished - or at least planned.  My daughter hesitated staying at a hotel because many are housing healthcare workers (noble, right thing to do, but element of risk).  She also was unsure of housekeeping, etc.  But then my sister in law 10 minutes away came up with an idea.  They have a luxury motor home they can use to quarantine.  They are setting it up now.  Has wifi, etc so both can work. It's really big and nice.  Perfect.  I've got them on a flight from Newark Monday which gets here by 6pm.  Non-stop so no additional risk with connections.  Used miles from United and it's wide open.  Dreamliner.  Nobody within 3 rows of them on any side.  Booked aisle and window - no middle seats being booked.  But 10 row chunks of the plane are completely empty.  They can get a car service and will wear masks/gloves the whole time.  Feel much better that they will be out of NYC - even for 1 to 2 months.  They will stay with us after quarantine.  You can tell mentally it was wearing on them being couped up that long.  Here they have plenty of room to walk and get air.  Please she's a little homesick so needs some Mom and Dad time going through this.

Thanks all for suggestions/help!

I was on the phone today with a high powered consulting firm in NY. Managing partner who works in the city was on. Practice leaders were from the Bay Area. MP says he also is in CA now as he fled the pandemic situation weeks ago.  Working remotely - doesn’t matter. Happy he left

My youngest daughter is there now. Lives in the financial district with her boyfriend. Working from home. Couped up. Hard to get any air. 1st positive in building a few days ago. Wanted her to fly home a month ago but she was sick with a cold and compromised. She’s healthy now. I have room. They can WFH here. Wide open spaces to breathe, walk etc. Cost isn’t an issue. I’ll buy her a ticket for a flight tomorrow. But have to ensure we don’t endanger each other. Airport/flight risk - heck, even getting to the airport is a risk. Nobody in either side has symptoms but no tests either.

Whats the right play here? Any other NYC/NJ FBGs make a clean escape? Advice?

Haven't read ahead but my God man get her the bleep up out of there, if she is over the cold that's great but do understand she could still carry it to you. Sounds like you could be at the age where catching this is a slightly bigger concern.

I'm eager to see how this turns out, you're doing the right thing and all I can read is the love love love that you have for her. 👍

You're doing the right thing. Sure, it would have been better had they boarded a plane in Jan/Feb but hind sight is 20/20. I think it will be a welcome relief from the center of the pandemic and I could understand how you feel. My son is fighting the front lines right now and I wish he could get a few days off but if he were in NYC vs where he is, yeah I would have evacuated him out of NYC too, and you probably will welcome some company of family since everyone has been locked up. NYC is closed until May 15th minimum, sure folks are getting into their grooves but mostly out of necessity, they will be much happier in an area where they can stretch a little bit more.

Cheers JS, glad you pulled the trigger.

I would arm everyone with hand sanitizer in a holster to be worn around their waist, ready to go at a sniffle's notice.

You also want body buzzers to engage if anyone passes within 6 feet of each other, meals will need to be served buffet style.

Have you stocked up on TP?

Landed, showered, In N Out delivered and resting in the luxury motor home to start quarantine. 80-90 in So Cal the rest of the week. Daughter is very excited to be out of NY right now

I was going to say to get a hold of President Hauk and have them send Snake Plissken to get her
