Giants Announce Kiwanuka's Move to Linebacker (1 Viewer)

This is a huge hit for any Kiwanuka dynasty owners. I considered trading for him at various times last year, but am now glad I didn't. Very disappointing.

As a Giants fan, I am intrigued. I hope he works out. With him, Pierce, Wilkinson, Mitchell, Torbor and DeOssie the linebacking corps is interesting. They still have a lot to prove, but there is potential there.

he did that last summer too, actually probably a year to the day Ernie said something very similar.

He'll be rushing the passer plenty. They can call him a CB for all I care, on 3rd down he'll be going after the QB a very large percent of the time.

Wow. I know they don't need him as a DE right now, but that kid should be a DE. He may make a decent to good SLB, but I think he can be a special DE. At some point, he'll be in man coverage, and that won't be a good thing.

Although I believe that Spags defensive system doesn't tend to isolate LB in coverage, as a Giants fan, I am skeptical of this move. I am hoping it is more of a pass-rushing LB type of role for this kid has shown flashes of having the potential of being a dominant DE in this league. He was a great pick at the bottom of the first round for the Giants last year and I will withhold judgment for I assume that NFL minds are greater than mine is this area. :goodposting:

Except when he rushes and then ... oh wait, what was I saying?

I would have thought they would try moving Tuck to LB rather than KIWI.
Last year they had rosey thoughts of Lavar rushing alongside Osi and Strahan and if they could afford to send Kiwi or Tuck too...."no one" could stop that. That never happenned, as ya know, due to injuries and such but there's gotta be sets in their playbook where Kiwi could play Lavar's role, then Tuck could play the role he and Kiwi were to do in 06. I don't think anyone, including the Giants, thought their DTs would play as well as they did and with all the press their DEs get I think that's almost forgotten. Coughlin has some weapons he can send. Coughlin needs to also give Strahan and Osi some rest in hopes the rest saves them from injury. Tuck and Kiwi give him these options. It's April, and Kiwi possibly playing LBer(as most would perceive it) is just a thought on depth. Wait til they get their hands dirty and get into some games+camp and all. Everything could change, they could even decide to dump Strahan's huge contract for all we know. It's just April chatter

This just seems silly to me.

I realize the new staff and scheme will see players differently. But you've got two of your three remaining ends coming off Lis Franc injuries. Both had surgery, meaning the injuries were significant and often take nearly 12 months to fully recover. One, Strahan, has been whining about holding out for months and will be 36 this year. The other, Tuck, has been taking snaps at DT often and has said he may not be ready for mini-camps.

Sure, the depth at backer isn't much better. But the Giants added Mitchell and DeOssie. I wouldn't be shocked to see Kiwanuka starting at end again sometime this season.

I'm going to assume the thread title "no as desperate for LBs as we thought" was tongue in cheek?

Moving a pure 4-3 defensive end to OLB is BY DEFINITION an indication that the Giants are desperate at linebacker.

I'm going to presume the Giants coaches know more about Kiwanuka than I do :) , but certainly the book on him doesn't project as a classic DE-OLB transition. As an Eagles fans, I say  About the only thing keeping me sane this weekend as the Birds crapped out on the draft was the fact that the Giants failed to address their needs; which are far more critical.
