Iron Maiden
Soundgarden
Talking Heads
The Who
Green Day
1. Not a metal fan.
2. Probably the least dynamic and interesting of the SubPop bands. Most of their songs just sort of sit there.
3. Some great stuff on the first 4 LPs (also some clunkers). They pretty much crapped the bed with Speaking in Tongues and beyond IMO. Byrne is one of those mad geniuses where one day he's churning out some pretty brilliant stuff and then the next day he's wearing a giant suit in the name of "art".
4. I think the early Who, like 1964-66, is probably the best of the British Invasion...even better than the Stones in that same timeframe. Great combo or pop, R&B, and proto-hard Rock.
I'm not a big fan of Tommy really. I think Townshend overextended himself there.
"Who's Next" has 3 or 4 great songs.
"Quadrophenia" isn't so hot (fun movie, though)
"By the Numbers" and "Who Are You?" don't really do much for me either.
"Face Dances" isn't very popular with hardcore fans but has some solid tunes.
After that there really isn't anything notable except maybe "Athena".
5. Green Day catches a lot of flack because of the "punk" tag. Fans of 70s and 80s punk take it really personal for some reason. I'd call them "power pop punk" I suppose. I see them as 3 guys that started off trying to be somewhat hardcore but grew out of it.
Once you get over the whole stupid "not real punk!" crap, you should be able to see they made some solid music.
I can't say that I dig every album/song but there's some great stuff sprinkled here and there.
IMO their best album is "Warning". It's a lot more mature than their previous stuff. "American Idiot" is a little too bloated for sure but some nice tracks either way.
