GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (6 Viewers)

While I'm here, I will give an update:

I'm still living at home.  It's a little weird, but passable.  Absolutely unsure of what we are doing.  My wife and I have been going to a marriage counselor who specializes in counseling couple's who are separating (weirdly, if it looks like the couple wants to reconcile, she will refer them to a different counselor for the job of making it work).  A strange niche to have, I guess.  Tomorrow I go to see the counselor without the wife.  I'm a little anxious about it.

Wife and I don't want to kill eachother, so that's nice.

As for other updates:  A HUGE part of my anxiety is taken up over my daughter (8th grade) trying out for the high school basketball team.  The high school routinely has a girl's varsity program that ranks as one of the top programs for the state (we go to TC Williams High School, of "Remember the Titans" fame).  8th graders in our district can try out for the HS squad.

She is a great athlete, and has great size for her position (she's almost 5'10" and is SOLID; she looks trim but is incredibly strong and must weigh a good 150 or so).

My anxiety stems from the fact, as some of you might know, that she was born without a right hand.  So she has to be good enough with what she has to make the team.  We've done a lot of practice together (when she'll let me join), and she's a pretty good dribbler with her left, and can even dribble a little with her right.  But her real skill now is her low post defense.  She is a monster in the paint.  I am desperately hoping that the coaches value this.

I've basically parented her by just pretending she has two hands, and let her figure out what she can do, and how to adapt.  No special services, or PT or OT visits, no prosthetics or trainers, no special keyboards or velco shoe laces.  Just . . . you can figure it out, you got this.  But I die inside a little every time I see her fail, even though I know that's how she learns to achieve.

One cool fact -- my daughter told me a couple of weeks ago that the JV assistant coach has MS (I think it's MS), and he told her that he was the first disabled kid in his high school history to letter in a varsity sport (I think cross country).  He seems to have taken an interest in her performance.  Not a homer interest.  And other kids have been incredibly supportive of her.  She is skeptical of all of it.  She doesn't consider herself disabled, and doesn't want any extra help.  She wants to rise or fall on her merits, nothing more.  I couldn't be prouder of her.  But I'm still a ball of anxiety over making the team.

tagging @jhib, who had some similar experiences and has given me support through the years.  How's your daughter doing, buddy?

tl;dr -- my daughter is trying out for sports. :confetti:
Breaking news from the J household!!!

Hope the Js won't mind my saying, but J-ita is a badass.

You're still here?  I can't remember the last time I was. Hello friendo.
Just doing stuff. Going to soccer rallies, appearing on TV, being a big deal.

Learned from the Internet tonight that the guy who plays Hodor is gay, so that's a thing.

How's the leggings empire going?

Sold off all remaining inventory at cost, lost a bunch of money, getting a real job since we are building our dream home now.

Well it's not built, so not yet, but we are working together to make a bunch of smart, financial sound decisions.

How's the G-League gig?
it's super great. Made another video. Also made a couple new, sweet friends on the cheerleading squad. Really feel like that thing is going in a positive direction.

You should talk to Redmond... but give it a few more months until the stink of it fades a bit.

Also let me know if you have any questions about the process. I'm a residential architect. And scarves.

I probably should have already done this.  We're already locked in and spending more money than I thought I could possibly ever afford.

What could go wrong?

Pretty high in more ways than one right now.  When I feel this way, happy, content, I think back to Florence. I miss the way I felt, we felt.

I may have told this story before.  If so we'll see how it holds up to scrutiny.

Mrs. SLB and myself were walking back from dinner, full of wine, when we see a couple that just got married and were celebrating in the piazza. I'll never forget the feeling I had seeing them thinking of people in my life that expressed their love for us on our nuptials. I was happy, I had my baby in my hand. I was jealous, I wanted to do it all over again.

Out of nowhere, we may have been staring, the groom motions me over.  He wants me to take a pic of him and the bride. With his iPhone.  I don't know how to work an iPhone. Plus I'm not what you would call "fluent in Italian". So I call Mrs. SLB over to take the pic. Finally.  He was married for several hours, maybe less. and already made a big mistake in trusting in me.

Wife always texts me that were out f something while at the grocery store.  I'll buy 2 or 3 of whatever it is and then go out the extras in the pantry and there will be like 3 more already there
we have the same wife.  I can't find anything in the pantry because there is so much just randomly thrown in there. Total chaos. You know how the fridge is designed to have the milk go in the door, condiments in the other door? not in mine.  Can never find ####.

same situation at my house.   to be fair to my wife though, i'm the guy that opens the cupboard or fridge to find something and can't see it.  I mean it will be literally right in front of me but I can't see it.  So then i yell "honey?  where's the ranch?"  and she comes over and grabs it and its literally 2 feet in front of my face. :bag:

I do that. We can't see it because it's never in the same place twice, except for her chocolate stash in the freezer.

Speaking of basketball teams, a year ago, Coop tried out for the 7th grade basketball team.  He was cut.  He was devastated.

So he went back to work, playing in the driveway, playing with his friends, playing rec ball, watching basketball, working working working.

He wanted to try out again for the 8th grade team.  Nearly 40 kids tried out with only 19 spots up for grabs.  3 days of try-outs, all organized by the varsity coach and his staff.  He made the B Team.  When I told him, you would have thought he made the Olympic team.  Course, now our weekends will be spent traveling near and far to watch him play games and the cost to play isn't insignificant.  But I'm really proud of him.  We're coming up on his 2 year anniversary of his Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis and he's not let it slow him down at all.

Now if he would just exert this sort of effort into his school work.....

You're a good dad.  You should have more kids.

If nobody comes from the future to stop you from doing it, then how bad of a decision could it be?

Sounds like he's walking in the footsteps of Michael Jordan!
