If happily invite any of you out to experience a piece of domesticated Otis life. You’ll Uber out to my house in Long Island. We’ll go out back and smoke cigars, drink beers/scotch/wine, talk about Shuke and Dodds, listen to some good slow jazz. I may lecture you about Thelonious Monk.  By the time you Uber back to your hotel in the city, you’ll be ready to drift off to the most peaceful of sleeps. No, it’s not as raucous as it used to be, but I can promise a good time and medium-to-good company.  Unless you’re single and looking for fun and wilding. I can no longer offer either.
Actually sounds pretty amazing

took my kids to get haircuts today. we don't do salon, $85 cuts for them. took em to a place that's connected to the mall where we found a girl who probably should be making a lot more money elsewhere.. but for whatever reason she cuts at this place.

she wasn't available but my kids needed cuts. it has been a long time.

i'd been with the kids all day and my wife had not so she stayed with them while they got trimmed up and i wandered the mall like a mope.

when i came back and asked how things had gone my wife says "(youngest, 7) is pissed. somehow the stylist got a little water on her neck and back and that threw her off so she's been angry the whole time".

haircut wrapped maybe 5 minutes later and my kid comes over to me in tears..... :hot: wtf

her: daddy, i need to get new clothes. i'm all wet

me: what do you mean you're all wet? turn around let me see.

stylist: uh, yeah, sorry i got a little water on her when we were washing her hair

kid turns around.. she is DRIPPING WET from neck to butt. soaked. not "a little" water but looks like this chick turned the shower faucet on her. i mean soaked ####### wet :hot:

we had some more errands to run afterwards and weren't close to home so had to buy her all new clothes. she was literally trailing water on the way to Old Navy to replace her outfit with cheap clothes so we could move on :hot:

if'n that was a dude who cut her hair, i'm going to lose my ####### mind barking at him trying to figure out what happened. no idea how she managed to basically give my kid a bath during a haircut. with my wife sitting 3 feet away.

i asked my wife.....

:hot:

Did he ever get that Ford Raptor? If so, you absolutely take the opportunity to tag along with him and see how many groceries that bad boy will fit in the back.
And when that's done you might get to see how many groceries Oats can stack in the bed of his truck.

Sold.

Lirr ticket purchased. Pick me up at the station in an hour. But no cigars. Way too phallic and stinky.

ETA... I can offer the same thing in the city. Well...minus the cigars of course.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

But a scarf is NEVER just a scarf.  Never.

we have a much bigger problem.  she just spilled the expensive chocolate milk all over the kitchen floor.

When I read ish like this, it makes me feel less unsure that we didn't have kids.  The idea of getting bent out of shape over either of these things (and believe me, I get angry about the most absolutely inane bull#### in nanoseconds anymore) sounds exhausting.  No wonder you can't hit the record button on your iPhone at work after a Packers' win.  You've been sweating all that True MooTM waste.  #saveFurliss

Went out with the wife.  Nice place, just did a smoked fish and cheese plate. Had a few double Jack on the rocks.

Had a good buzz going. My wife could tell and asked if the bartender was making my drinks strong

I’m heading into town right now so Mrs. O can do some illegal pruning.  You heard me right.   I’m the wheelman apparently.  @Uruk-Hai, if possible, can you bail me and Mrs. O out when you get here?  TIA

Yes, but I won't be there until Tuesday. I would like to hear more of this "illegal pruning" you're talking about, though.

I'm still rolling around in my 2004 Infiniti.  What a great car.  170K miles and still drives like a dream.  Will hand it down to Coop in a couple of years (my dad is giving the K-man his car at the end of Nov).  Man, time flies....

Not sure what I'll get after I hand my car down.  Since it'll be on the eve of college, I might just go carless since I commute to work most days.  I'd like to look at an EV, but man...those are pricey.  I've also never bought a new car in my entire life.  Always gently used.
Gently Used is the name of my Cycle Sluts from Hell tribute band

This sounds like an amazing night.

For like  the last 20 years. #### me.

And Cal's in high school?

JFC.
Right? He's a beast.  At 14.5 a little over six foot, probably 190, strong as hell.  Plus crazy smart.  It just so happens that his computer teacher, who is also the leader of the STEM club he joined, is also the football coach.  I told him there would be a little something extra in his paycheck if he could get Cal to try out for the football team.  He thought I was joking.

I asked Cal to go with me to drop Dylan off at baseball practice Saturday.   On the way I noticed this little BBQ joint and figured we ditch Dyl and get something to eat.  Oh, and a beer.  I really needed a beer.   Cal got the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans of some sort. (Not sure how he's my kid when there was perfectly good green beans with bacon or potato casserole baked with gouda.)  We're eating and there's this young, cute waitress that's bring out the food to everyone. I mention it to Cal and he replies "she's probably 16 dad!"  A few minutes later she brought him, just him, a cookie.  I had to put my sunglasses on he was radiating so much.

Been absent a lot lately. Not having the best of times. Still job hunting. Tomorrow is the first anniversary of my mom's passing. My dad has been in the hospital on two separate occasions over the last week. Tuesday is my oldest's 18th birthday but I haven't talked to him in almost two months because he won't return my calls or texts. Friday night was my 30th HS reunion, which was actually a lot of fun. Lots of bad music, that I love, and beers.

This concludes the depressed, look at me, ####posting.

Sorry to hear red. Keep those feet moving, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, just gotta make it there.

And keep reaching out to your kids, no matter what you have to do to do it.

Put the dog down on Thursday.

It was rough, but it had to be done. I do thank her for pretty much sticking to the plan. She was my son’s 6th birthday present. This was done knowing full well that 12 years is a good run for a dog, thus when my son left for college, me and mom wouldn’t be left behind to take care of son’s dog because I really never wanted to get one in the first place. Of course, over the years she became a part of the family and I did grow to love that girl. To the point that I was a blubbering, tearful mess at the vet..... and maybe a day or two leading up to that.

Anyway..... She’d been quickly deteriorating since Labor Day. Last weekend, my son made his first trip back home from college. He hadn’t stepped foot in the house in a month. When him walking through that door didn’t perk her up, I knew it was time.

Amazed at how much she’s, for the lack of a better term, haunting me. Get out of bed and out of habit tip toe through the dark bedroom so I don’t trip over her. Accidentally drop food on kitchen floor and have to pick it up myself!!?!??? What’s that crap? Close the bathroom door so she doesn’t get in there and drink out of the toilet.

I’m hoping that vodka makes that go away.
Stupid vet being all considerate, sending us a 'with sympathy' card

Wife: Awe! That's so nice.

Me :

Sorry, dude.  Stick around here and feel free to vent as needed.

Thanks again to those who donated to my fundraiser and apologies for being so late to post this.  I was blown away by the generosity here and from my IRL friends and family and raised ~$2000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

I think I mentioned here that I intended to climb a mountain a day for 10 days straight, but what I ended up doing was 16 mountains in ten days instead. :)  On each one, I took either my 46climbs bandanna or t-shirt (46climbs was the fundraiser name) and took a picture of that at the summit.  Figured I'd share a few of those pictures with you (leaving out the duplicates and not-as-pretty ones) and thank you again for donating.

Mt. Storm King

Mt. Defiance - that's me in the background wearing my 46climbs t-shirt.  I have a close-up version of me on this mountain, but nuh-uh

Blue Mountain - that's my adorable 75-year-old mom

West Tiger Mountain - Boomer the Boston Terrier proudly sporting the bandanna

Mount Fremont

Third Burroughs

Second Burroughs

First Burroughs

Mt. Walker

Mt. Zion

Bonus pic of Mt. Rainier at sunrise, just because it's beautiful
These are awesome.  Any rock climbing required or all hiking?  Marked trails?

Sorry GB. :(

My mom's birthday is tomorrow.  Probably corny, but we're having a dinner/party for her tomorrow with a cake.  Oh, and scotch.  Woman loved her scotch.

I'm sorry to hear this, but hang in there and lean on us when needed.  A lot of us have been through similar things and can help.

Thanks!  A couple of them require some mild scrambling but no official rock-climbing with gear or anything, though Mt. Storm King has an anchored ropes section that is unmaintained and most people (including me) find intimidating, followed by a scary scramble with steep drop-offs on each side.  Last time I'd been up there, there was a helicopter recovery going on for a teenager that had fallen off the ropes section and died. :(  Most of these hikes are fairly well maintained and straightforward trails, though the first couple of times I had tried to do Mt. Defiance I got lost, and getting to that particular viewpoint beyond the summit of Mt. Zion also took me three tries.
