Unrelated:  One of the projects at my place of business today got the rug pulled out from under it.  Second one in less than a year.  6 or 8 people sacked.  Luckily, I'm on another team, but ain't no one feeling very comfy now.  I will quietly be putting out feelers fo' sho', so any of y'all So Cal types that know anyone who needs a ruggedly handsome, somewhat jaded, tired, aging creative type that wants to find a place to tick off the days til he dies, the line forms here! (actually that all isn't exactly true.....I'm probably completely jaded)

Was in a rush this morning and grabbed a fork out of the dishwasher.  Apparently I accidentally grabbed one of those giant serving forks.  I feel like a giant eating my lunch

 
Roverkid's concussion saga continues.   We're at 3 1/2 weeks from the injury.  She still has constant headaches and dizziness with some occasional nausea.  Has tried a couple days of school but couldn't do it.   Can't do homework or read for more than 10 minutes or so, and doesn't retain anything she reads.   

Saw a sports medicine specialist today, who's referring her out to physical therapy for her neck and for eye exercises that are supposed to help with the dizziness.   

Working with the school is a pain.   Although they're pretty accommodating, there is no clear plan for re-entry, and conflicting information on how her classes/grades are going to work when she returns.   This also adds to her anxiety, which interferes with recovery.   

It's still possible she can play club volleyball win the season starts in December, but it's looking less likely every day as tryouts are November 20.   She's afraid that since she hasn't been practicing or doing drills, she won't make the cut anyway, which causes her more anxiety.

Very frustrating all around.  

 
sorry to hear, fish.

I've had a bunch of concussions over the years... nothing as bad as your poor daughter is going through. :(   hope she gets better soon.

My almost 15 year old daughter has had 4 knee surgeries in the past 19 months While a head injury is way more serious then what my daughter is experiencing I have lived thru most of your frustrations. 

Teenage girls are fragile so constantly reassure her things will be normal but she has to be patient.  Keeping the dark thoughts and self-pity at bay can be a full time job but they need their Dad to be the beacon of light. 

My kid missed a couple of sports seasons. When we foolishly thought her recovery would be quick we talked to her middle school coach and got her exempted from tryouts. When she was still on crutches as the season stated she became the manager.  Far from what she wanted but it allowed her to be around the team. 

For school in NC they have a 504 plan for extended absences that provide some protections for your kid as they re-enter school. It could be a tutor, extended deadlines for work or partial days. 

Keep being the rock for your daughter and fighting to make sure she is getting the best care possible.  One thing I learned is some doctors suck.  Hope that isn’t your experience but if you aren’t getting the answers you need, find another doctor.

My son was on one of these in IL (same # plan) for his entire HS time. I'm sure each school is different, but he went to a private school which I couldn't complement them enough on how well they handled what was a somewhat difficult situation.

Think I mentioned before that my niece was diagnosed with T1D when she was about 8 or 9. Its tough sledding for her and her immediate family at times, but she's really an awesome kid. Handled all the medical stuff that came along with it like a champ, got herself involved in everything she could. Even took it upon herself to become JDRF ambassador.  I've watched her, at now 10 years old, talk in front of a couple of thousand people fearlessly. Its not an ideal situation, but its wonderful to watch her rise to the challenges that come along with it.  As we've become empty nesters  (son's now off at college) and looking to find things to occupy our time with, we've taken up the cause too helping with the annual 5K in the area. Wife's on the committee, I help with the labor intensive stuff when needed.

They do the Apex of what I do, for apparently good money but high stress and long hours. It's tempting. My new gig is ok money, and I'm learning solid administrative skills, but a step down in design from what I'm used to and has me questioning my long term desire to do this level of work, even prior to meeting my friend.

Sorry to hear this.  With so many of us in this thread having experience with concussions I wish there was some great advice we could give, but all I was told by the doctors was that I need quiet, low lighting, and rest.  I really hope she turns a corner and starts seeing noticeable improvement soon.

Personally, I think she should use some medicinal marijuana, but I think her mom would have me arrested.  

 
Thanks @berndog @Epic Problem and @General Malaise for suggesting the 504.  I followed up with the school RN and we're meeting with her and Roverkid's teachers next week to get the ball rolling.  It will take some of the stress out of this for her to know there is a way to not fall way behind in school.

pissing blood today.  good times.  quite nerve racking since i only have one kidney.  got a shot in my ### and get to take old guy prostate medicine for a month.   :mellow:

@-fish- that's some scary stuff.  we just got my daughter's cast off today and she has to wear a brace for 2 more weeks.  she is not happy

Marginally, if I'm understanding your question correctly.  The industry is still ludicrously volatile and it is legitimately something I think about far, far, far too often.  As much as I probably attempt to fool myself, I'm getting older and there aren't that many folks who stick with this stuff very far into their 50s.  I have zero idea about "what comes next" right now though, so I keep rushing forward for fear if I stop I won't get started again. 

The only major thing industry related about being on this coast that's changed is that there are more opportunities when/if things go sideways.  That said, I don't want to be on the market at the same times as a couple dozen others with similar skillsets in the same zip code all at once if I can avoid it.

(Sorry, I don't mean to make light about your stuff.  I'm a horrible person and am half buzzed/punchy from going 2500 RPMs for about 11 hours today with nothing concrete to show for it at the end.  Wheeeeee! )

That's pretty cool, she sounds like a badassssssss.  

Coop has a pump now, which has made things a lot easier on him.  The technology is pretty impressive, but there are still hiccups along the way.  He's got basketball tryouts coming up and thinks he will make the freshman team.  I'm so nervous for him; he's worked his butt off and has been playing year round with the same group of kids from his HS, so they've bonded and created a great group of friends.  But....Coop is a much younger and shorter than these guys, so the odds are stacked against him.  He says he'll move on if he gets cut and do something else, but I know he'll be heartbroken and that will just kill me and my wife.  He's got two more games on Saturday before the official tryouts, so we'll be there rooting him on as always.  He's fun to watch.

I think it could actually use some input from the smarter gender as the thread does try and tackle the tough moral quandary of 'cheating or not cheating' if you visit one.

I mentioned it in that thread that I don’t think it’s cheating but my wife would.  Hell  she’d probably be more pissed if she caught me ####### a robot than another woman

At least h's trying. I remember when my son came home and told me he wasn't trying out for HS hoops. That kid busted his rump through Jr High to make himself a pretty good player. We were already into the issues ( ended up being diagnosed as POTS ) that forced him onto the 504 plan and the doctor couldn't emphasize exercise enough as a way to fight the symptoms he was experiencing. What better avenue for exercise than BB practice, right? Plus, the amount of school he missed didn't help the transition from Jr High to HS and felt a bit left out when it came to his and new social circles and it was weighing on him. Figure it would help there. 

But leading up to the point that we finally had a diagnosis, and a bunch of school already missed, he was scrambling to keep up with just about everything. He didn't want to put the added weight of playing on top of all the other crap, so I had to bite my tongue and let him walk away.

I haven't asked my wife yet because she already thinks I'm weird enough, but I believe the PAYMENT to make love to a robot would bother her more than the cheating or weirdness of it all.

Despite being all of 5'7" (maybe, with shoes) he's probably the team leader in offensive rebounds and whatever the stat is that tracks saving the ball from going out of bounds (second chance points?  I dunno).

Today roverkid went to two classes, per doctor's orders.   Both teachers told her she would not be exempt from missed work (directly contrary to the doctor's letter, the counselor and the nurse), and her AP environmental science teacher told her to drop the class or she would fail her.  Nice.  There's going to be some heat in this discussion next Wednesday, and quite possibly threats of lawsuits.

well, back to the school to do battle with the administration on how to handle that kind of teacher behavior.
