Airlines have become just awful. Booked vacation flights about 8 months ago. A month later they moved the initials departure time up an hour. Ok, no big deal. Gotta be up insanely early to depart at 5:45am and now have a 4 hour layover in Minneapolis, but whatever, still get into Glacier at 1:30pm.

Then last night get a message that the flight is delayed 3.5 hours which now gives me just a 30 minute layover in Minneapolis. Not so good.

Then the flight gets delayed another hour and they re-book us to have a 9 hour layover in Minneapolis before flying to Salt Lake City where we’d have a 2.5 hour layover before flying out and finally getting into Glacier at 12:20am.

So I rebooked those flights to now fly out at 6:40pm directly to SLC where we have a 1 hour layover before departing to Glacier where we’ll arrive at 12:20am. With a 2 hour drive to our lodging (that of course is not refundable at this point), our first day is now miserable. That all assumes that we don’t get screwed again thanks to me rolling the dice with just a 1 hour layover in SLC.

Thanks Delta! Nothing like delaying a 5:45am flight for 5 hours despite the plane already sitting in Philadelphia!

Just had Sun Country cancel our flight from Minneapolis to Nashville three months in advance. No explanation, of course. Non-refundable VRBO already booked, and now our only option is to leave first thing in the morning and arrive with our bags and without a car six hours before we can get into our VRBO.

Wonderful.

I used to enjoy visiting far away places. I'm 49 and if I never get on a plane again I'll die a content man.

Starting to wish we stuck with the original flight with the 11 hours of layovers.

Our departure plane from Philly is coming from Salt Lake. It’s already scheduled to depart late from Salt Lake by 52 minutes despite the fact the plane has been there for 3 hours already. Delta reporting that allegedly my departure time is unchanged, but that seems unlikely. With just a 1 hour layover in Salt Lake, things aren’t looking good.

What a joke.

I miss the company here.
Anyone want to do a Best Ball season long draft?
Do a slow draft for a week or two of fun schtick and the not have to deal with it all season. WE could use an 8 hour timer so it rally should not interfere with your life too much for the next week or so.
We can do about any amount we want for entry fee. I think 35 or 50 would be reasonable. The site collects the money and pays the winners.
I've been pretty happy with Underdog. I think most of us could use them. lmk

Just came back from Glacier. Perfect this time of year. But a PITA getting there. We flew SLC to Billings, followed by a lot of driving, as we had a loop planned via Yellowstone.

Are you flying into Kalispell?

Well, we’re TRYING to fly into Kalispell. Flight just left from SLC to Philly 1hr 8 minutes late. Scheduled to land at 6:20pm. My flight is scheduled to depart at 6:40pm. :sadbanana: Delta still shows my departure as being on time, lol.

At this point I’m betting we miss our connection to Kalispell and don’t get out of SLC until tomorrow now. If that happens, right now there is exactly 3 seats left for the 3:20pm departure. Which means the 10:30pm departure out of SLC tomorrow night is looking very possible at the moment. :kicksrock:

Ha! Yeah, on a map, it sorta, kinda looks like a relatively easy drive....WRONG! We went from the North Entrance to Kalispell where we spent the night before hitting Glacier in the morning. Only the West Glacier Entrance was open then thanks to Covid. It's a long long drive indeed and not a lot of cruise control 75 coasting either.

Yep. And you don’t want be driving at night - we did Yellowstone to Glacier in a day, stopping at Bozeman several hours.

That was a big mistake, as our drive now extended after dark. Saw no fewer than a dozen deer along the road, just waiting to bound into the highway. And it was foggy/raining much of the way.

No way were we driving 70-75 under those circumstances. We were lucky to go 60. Probably added a couple hours to the drive.

UPDATE: Either Delta and their website is stupid or I am. I swear everything said we were getting into SLC at 10:25 and flight was leaving at 10:45.

Our flight got delayed a few minutes yet again, has the same flight time, but suddenly we’re getting in at 10:00. :loco: Which going by the average flight time for this route would actually still be the longest flight time in the last 2 weeks by 20 minutes.

So suddenly it looks like we shouldn’t have TOO much trouble making our connection. Fingers crossed.

Delta always pads their flight times by a ridiculous amount. Then they're always on time!!

Just came back from Glacier. Perfect this time of year. But a PITA getting there. We flew SLC to Billings, followed by a lot of driving, as we had a loop planned via Yellowstone.

Are you flying into Kalispell?
Ok, so now that I’m not as angry and focused on the travel, what were your favorite things you did at Glacier?
going to the sun road is a must do and I really liked running eagle falls i liked mcdonald lake and apgar and you should see the glacier lodge and have a meal there the age and history and views are awesome take that to the bank bromigo

I think you're confusing him with Joe Briden, our President.

Have 2 nights at Many Glacier hotel, definitely looking forward to that.

Made our connecting flight and at least getting into Kalispell tonight. In the end, didn’t lose a ton off our itinerary, just made our day a whole lot longer and more stressful. Oh, and cost us an extra $400 for a hotel for tonight.

But hey, I’m on vacation and looking forward to what Glacier has to offer.

Love CT. So temperate and bucolic.

Glad to hear it. It is really bucolic where you are, which is Canton/Avon, right? Are you in Collinsville? If so, that's a really nice, bucolic area.

CT won't let me play Underdog, so I drive up to the notch (through Granby) once a week to enter a bunch of slow drafts on my phone.

CT used to (and still might) have those blue laws, man. They are not friendly to non-state or Native American gambling for sure. That notch, as I might have told you, is where I grew up and we'd cross the border at said notch into Massachusetts to buy alcohol past 9 P.M. on weekends. Eleven P.M. was the last call for any sort of purchased beer to watch football with unless you wanted to drive the two-plus hours to New York.

But it's cool to hear you're okay and like the area.

I’ve been a couple times. So many great hikes, and wildlife viewing opportunities. My favorite hikes:

1. Dawson-Pitamaken loop - 19+ miles, spectacular alpine scenery in the least visited quadrant of the park (Two Medicine). You’ll need 8-10 hours for this one, but it’s worth it. A little exposed through the mountain passes, so not good if you’re scared of heights, or out of shape. Tons of huckleberries.

2. Highline Trail - skirts the upper cirque along Going to the Sun Road. Shorter than D-P, but still a 12 mile, 6-8 hour affair. I’d do one way from Logan Pass to the loop, and catch a shuttle back to your car. There’s a steep spur trail which overlooks Grinell Glacier, which was pretty awesome, too. My wife was cursing my choice to do it, as we had to post-hole through a foot or more snow much of the way to the overlook.

3. Iceberg Lake - shorter, flat hike to a small glacial lake. If you do it, might as well get in the water.

Speaking of frigid water, there’s a pull-out on the western side of GTTSR called Red Rock Point. 30 yards off the road is a stream with a big rock you can climb to jump ~15 feet into a snowmelt pool below.

I’ve heard the Grinell Glacier hike is also spectacular, and the trailhead is near the Many Glacier Hotel. While we‘ve camped most of the time we’ve been there, Many Glacier seems like the nicest lodge. Their huckleberry drinks are good, with or without alcohol.

Personally, I was underwhelmed with the lodge food. There’s a local restaurant called Two Sisters in Babb, just outside East Glacier, that has decent diner-style fare. Huckleberry pie and ice cream were good, and the huckleberry cheesecake is supposed to be excellent (but they run out early).

In general, try to be out at dawn and dusk to view wildlife. We’ve seen several bears, bighorn sheep and mountain goats right off the road. On the hikes you may see that stuff too, plus marmots, chipmunks and pika. Don’t forget to look up for raptors; we saw several bald eagles + hawk-like birds, possibly peregrine falcons.

And if you're gonna hike much, I’d get bear spray.
