Oh, and your sibling sounds like a real, ummm, champ. Sorry to hear.

If I were your step-dad, I wouldn't be that worried about not talking to him the next time I saw him, I'd be planning on not seeing him any time soon.
Hey buddy, wish things were going better for you in Reno. Look forward to some good updates soon. I know it's going to get better.

Bear canisters are just food storage that bears can't get into. Big canisters with opening devices they can't maneuver.
But they can still get into the tent, right?
I'll buy a bear can big enough to sleep in.

OPM, thanks. It is so cool for me to have my mom here. Might be hard to understand for someone who hasn't lived far from family. I guess I never thought it was a big deal to be so far away, but at this point it's exciting for me to have her and my stepfather (who's terrific) here.
Sometimes I take my family for granted. We all get along great. We have our spats but all is forgiven within a day or so.

That even includes my extended family. At the family reunion I just got back from we had probably 40+ cousins, aunts, uncles etc. Aside from two female cousins (sisters) who don't really talk to each other everyone gets along great. And in the rare case of some sort of drama, it doesnt last long.

I guess I should appreciate it more.
That sounds like my wife's family. It makes me very jealous. She is in awe of the psychopathic dynamic my side devolves into at the the slightest instigation. Luckily its mostly resolved with my parents, but the siblings love to stir the pot. Actually I don't know that they love it, but feel compelled to do it because of some long unresolved inner conflict. Shrug. Enjoy it Tannerboy, you have no idea how fortunate you are to have it.

I'm going camping this weekend. Like, honest to god have to haul all our #### 8-10 miles one way into the woods. I don't mind the hauling part--though taking a 30-35 lb pack instead of my usual 10-15 lb daypack will be different--but sleeping on the ground (even with tent/footprint, sleeping pad, and sleeping quilt) in a confined space isn't really my bag. Oh, and we're required to have a bear canister where we're camping.

I dunno.
Awesome. Years and years ago a buddy and I backpacked up into the Little Yosemite valley. One of the best trips I've ever been on.

This is kind of a warm-up trip for our camping in The Enchantments in September. There is a lottery system for permits, and people try for years and years with no luck, but we won on our first try. That's a more grueling hike than the one we're doing this weekend (Royal Basin), and we thought we'd better have some practice with the tent, cooking, setting up camp, hauling gear, etc.

Our Astros are really playing well. That tiny Fella (reference to Mexican nationality redacted) we have can really put the wood on the leather, you know?
:moneybag:
That hand is not in the bush just yet. Something like that. Looking really good, though.
Yeah, not ready to crown them Division Champs just yet but last night was a big win. Especially being down early they could have folded, easily been swept and found themselves out of the race.Heck of a lot more fun when your team isn't shattering records for losing.
I'm referring to my season o/u bet Kev made in Vegas.

Playoffs would be a bonus and seem legitimately possible, but I'm still having trouble wrapping my brain around an Astro postseason.

I've mentioned before that my brother is an #######. Essentially just the most selfish person I've ever known. Many examples of this that I won't bore you with. Also was just a huge jackass to my dad our whole lives, until my dad got sick (and died), when he became a jackass only 78% of the time. After dad died it suddenly became this horribly tragic event in my brother's life to evoke sympathy, even though he went through years of not even speaking to my dad.

Until fairly recently, my mom was the only person that my brother had consistently been decent to in our entire lives. But after a bad marriage and one kid (my almost-16-year-old nephew, who somehow is great despite bad parents), my brother got remarried and has gone to being a #### to my mom about as much as he is to everyone else. Though they lived within 10 miles of each other, my brother would see my mom only a couple or few times a year and would constantly post stuff on Facebook showing fun stuff they were doing without inviting my mom/stepfather.

As my FB/FBG friends might know, my mom and stepfather just moved to my town in Washington. Much excitement for me, as I haven't lived in the same state as family since high school, and I know they will be really happy here. Well, despite never actually wanting to include my mom in anything, my brother took the news badly allegedly because they should have waited until my nephew graduated from high school (two years) before moving. Who knows why that matters since they rarely got to see him.

In all the moving time, my brother/family never offered to help or do anything at all. They made no plans to get together with my mom before the departure and only saw them when my 95-year-old grandfather asked for a family get-together. My mom/stepfather gave my nephew their second car as a gift when leaving town. (It was a pretty nice car.) It was immediately absconded with by my new SIL who has even posted pics of herself in it on FB. My nephew has told my mom he'll never get to use it because it's hers now. No one--NO ONE--has thanked them for giving away their car.

Mom has now been in town for five days and my brother has not inquired to see if they made it here OK (they drove across the country for 2500 miles) nor even asked for their new address. My stepfather, who is the most patient man in the world, has said that when he next sees them he doesn't plan to talk to them.

tl;dr I have no point here. I'm just venting. I have a horrible sibling and feel awful for my mom. Cannot vent through more regular (family, friends, FB) channels for obvious reasons.
WTF is wrong with people? :(

Krista: Was so happy for you when I saw that your mom had moved here. It is also great to see you posting back here again. Don't get eaten by bears.
Or shot by a dentist.

looks amazing... jealous.

my family (also pretty amazing parents but MIA- not #######- older brother) used to "camp" in the High Sierra camps in Yosemite... looks pretty similar (except they had tents sent up at each camp and a place to eat as well). those were some of my favorite memories, being at altitude after a tough hike... granted on trails.. with my family and lots and lots of stars. I've said it before, but my NYC kids are literally afraid to walk on grass, let alone go for a hike somewhere. someday.

sorry about your brother. sounds like he's just absent and self-serving more than an active #######. not that that's prize-worthy. also good news that the folks are now close by- I can empathize with the cross-country family... not a fan.

please don't get eaten by bears.

That does look extremely similar. Fantastic!

GM, this is generally the time of year when we discuss getting together for a Ducks game, though later something arises that nixes the plan. I realize you're busy with all the kids in the world, but we should get on this annual fake-out ritual if we're going to do it up right.
How about this: I give you a pair of tickets to the Cal/Oregon game November 7th. You guys come down Friday, we host you for dinner. You and OH take the tickets for the game the next day. We watch NFL football on Sunday at a sports bar together. You head back home after. ????? Profit.

Also, if you want to take the train or even the Bolt Bus (big fan), I can pick you up and you can borrow my car to go down to the game on Saturday. I might have another pair of tickets available to you if you can't make Nov. 7th...let me know!

Krista>I'd like to take all of Krista clan boating and crabbing. And roverkid will teach them to bet the ponies.
My friend, if you're serious, I can tell you that my mom and stepfather would love you. Seriously. And everyone loves roverkid, so that's a given.

K4, sounds like mom got a huge upgrade moving out here
Brought tears to my eyes with this post, GB. I'm pretty emotional about it right now because I'm a woman it really sucks for them. I do think they're happy with the move. Thanks for being so sweet.
Roverkid is my favorite non-GM kid.

That whole idea sounds like so much fun. IN! Where is a good place for us to stay? (No camping.)

Vaping seems complicated:

"I still use the Grand. Highly recommend. Yeah, the unit and the RBA and a few batteries are going to run you about $250 up front, but then the cost of vaping drops to nearly zero. I bought a liter of 100mg nic base and 3 bottles of hyper-concentrated FlavourArt juice flavoring (which lasts a long time, you can mix your stuff at 1-3% flavor and it's very vapable) so now my only costs of maintenance are kanthal wire, cotton balls and the occasional quart of vegetable glycerin. I spend maybe $5-10 annually on vaping and the REOs are built to last forever. I suppose the Reomizer RBA may crap the bed at some point, so that's $45 to replace, and I have to buy a liter of the nic base every 3 years or so, but vaping is basically free for me now with a ~$300 initial investment."
Yeah, I still just roll 'em in paper or use a pipe. People that are way into 'vaping' remind me of people that got really into poker ten years ago. I think they just like using the jargon more than they actually like what they are doing.

I think he was talking about the cigarette replacements, but I suppose the larger point still stands.

Downtown Portland has plenty of good offerings for hotels and would be where I would stay. You can drive down and back for the game. Eugene is about 90 minutes to 2 hours away, depending on traffic. Hotels in Eugene can be hard to find on gameday, but I don't think Cal will sell them out the way USC will.

You realize there are twin GM infants there, right?

One of my gun-toting conservative fb 'friends' liked my status update:

"If Cecil had his own gun, none of this ever would have happened"

I don't think she understands satire.

Got to pick up one of our limited partners today from a small airport in his Citation 10 jet. Holy crap. He let me take a tour inside. Unbelievable. He flew from Columbian, SC to Seattle in a little over 4 hours yesterday. It took him 30 minutes to get to Portland from Seattle this morning. Good old boy from South Carolina, in good with Steve Spurrier (says he's a helluva a guy, but his wife is a saint), made his fortune in pharmaceuticals and is one of the best salesman I've ever met (outside of SLB, of course).

He said growing up in SC, he would pay black kids fiddy cents a basket to pick blackberries, then sell them for a dollar. Said he had to scare the snakes away with his grandfather's cane first as the kids in his employ were terrified of the snakes. What a country!
