Apologies for poor formatting. Copy/pasting from phone.

This email from a parent of a 6 year old child.  It comes to the rec soccer league of which I serve as a board member.  I get all these emails.  Some, like the one below, deserve to be shared.  Enjoy.

Dear Milhouse Soccer

Used to coach my sisters team age K-7th grade, played all thru school and college and med school, etc .

Wanted to ask about coach selection for my daughter, Jenna, Kinder this Fall.  I would like her suited with an aggressive coach, as she is playful but very competitive in nature, and that's a good thing on the field.  I know all the coaches are great, but some are more aggressive and forceful than others, and have a more competitive reputation.  I would like some names of coaches recommended that meet this descirption.

Additionally, as my sisters coach, I feel, as did the parents of her teammates, that the line between family and professionalism on the field was upheld with excellence while I coached my sisters team over the years. That being said, I welcome feedback on what you would recommend, as far as my coaching or assistant coaching a K team and beyond, either with or without my daughter (or 2 year old future player son) on my team.  It sure made for convenient scheduling if I coached my sisters team, and not someone elses.  But I wanted to be upfront about my detailed awareness and study of the psychology involved with both the other players and me and my daughter.  I assure you my daughter won't be calling me "daddy" on the field at anytime....lol... or she will be running laps.  Haha!  Been there, done that.

Looking forward to contributing to the highest and best use I am called upon by your wonderful organization, at Millhouse!

WTF did I just struggle to read?

Some good news (which we can all use)...

This guy that I've been teaching with (same subject) for the last 20 years is finally retiring.  He's a moody motherjumper.  On his good days he's a decent guy.  But when he's in one of his moods his a caustic pain in the ###.  I learned a long time ago to ignore him.  But the last couple of years I've been hoping he'd hang it up.  Basically I've been tolerating him just because he's not worth letting him get to you.
I almost told this guy to #### off today.  Not to be coy but I'll tell the story later.

trnaslate:

"I am the best ####### coach ever. I should be my daughter's coach. My life would be better if I coached her. I also may or may not have slept with my sister... depending on the prevailing mood in here. plus, comma, comma, comma. and #### you Forrest".

as a dad who has coached 4 & 5 year olds now for 3 seasons i can say that this guy seems completely reasonable.

two years ago i coached by oldest's 5 year old co-ed team.

had a "co-coach".

day 1 of practice he comes outfitted in his soccer kit, asks me what sort of drills i planned on taking the kids through. did i have a plan of action for the day or could he contribute with some great ideas he had based on his career playing street soccer overseas while in college.

i said something like "uh, yeah, we're going to learn each others names. see which kids know what a soccer ball is and then run around until they get tired."

the look of disgust and disappointment on his face was more impressive than my wife's when i said "will you marry me?"

11 kids on the team. he called half of them to "his" half of the field and demonstrated how to juggle a soccer ball with his feet, not letting it touch the ground. then asked the kids to try same. he was trying to have them flick the ball in the air, then kick the ball on goal before it hit the ground.

half the kids hadn't played soccer before. the other half were unfit for juvenile detention. then my perfect little angel, a model child and budding soccer superstar.  none of them had a chance. kicking a ball was over some of their heads. a handful of them were terrified of getting hurt. some were scared of the ball itself.

guy got so upset that the kids couldn't do college level soccer tricks that i thought he was going to cry.

his kid was on the team. freaking miserable. picked more flowers and grass than any of the other kids. couldn't have been less interested. guy quit and pulled his kid from the team with 3 or 4 games to go in the season.

wow.

In my limited experience....most youth sports coaches are the ####### worst.  Regardless of sport.

9 times out of 10 they took on coaching so their ingrate kids could get special treatment.  Or, as in the case of my old little league team in my formative years, totally use the team as their "extra personal bank account."   My childhood best friend's parents, no less.  They turned out to be a couple of awesome human beings(as did he.  apple didn't fall far, I guess).

Yes, I'm painting with a very broad brush, but I'm sort of a judgmental #######.

as the coach of a 5 year old co-ed team this year, it's not my fault that my junior Mia Hamm won't come off the field the entire season. nor is it my fault that she's the only kid that gets to touch the ball. if the other kids were even 1/20th as capable they might actually get to be able to play but since we all know that's not possible, i have to work with the clay i've been given.

Reading that literally made my head hurt.  Just took 3 ibuprofen.

Partly fair, partly not. I coached traveling baseball for 4 years mainly because we had trouble finding other Dad's who had the time and knew anything about baseball. I friggin loved it. Still miss it and "my" teams ended up being damn good as a bonus.

But I certainly encountered more than my fair share of coaches you are talking about. 9 out of 10 seems harsh though. For the most part I think they end up being guys completely over their heads with the responsibility and really don't know anything about coaching. More clueless than conniving.

Yeah, I agree here.  We met as a board last week and discussed two coaches that we will not bring back for the fall.  That's out of hundreds of volunteer rec league coaches.  Of those two, one was officially reprimanded by the referees for being aggressive (after receiving multiple warnings) and is being barred from coaching from OYSA, the other is just a giant jerkass and we don't want him around the kids.  He's not going to be real happy to learn of our decision.

Update: excellent lunch with Bentley. He is changing the world for the better and had the mixed grill.   I had gumbo and a hurricane.

trying to understand the reasoning behind this. not having ever been in this situation before, and not knowing anyone else who is, can you explain it?
The govt basically credits you up to $25000 in write off the first year you buy a new large work vehicle. Plus you get to depreciate the cost of the vehicle on a 5 yr schedule. If your business generates good profits and/or you have high taxable income it's a good way to lower your tax rate.
