Last year I was helping my 2nd grader with her math homework.  It asked to solve the problem using one of the new stupid ways (deconstructing numbers or something like that).  I had no idea what it meant, and my daughter couldn't explain to me how she had learned.  I took a wild stab at explaining it, she got the right answer, but she got it marked wrong because we did the steps wrong.

This year twice I have had to go online to figure out what the hell she was supposed to do.  She can do the "normal" equations when they are above each other, carry the tens, blah blah blah.  But doesn't understand all the other common core crap.

 
I'm all for the decrease in homework for youngsters... studies have proven that it's not benefiting the younger ones, and I've watched my nieces (22 & 18) spend their lives slammed with hours and hours of homework to, IMO, their detriment. wife and I both believe in down-time for the kids...  that lack of script and even boredom is a great incubator for creativity.

but a little more direction than just putting up a bunch of stuff on the school website is needed (and after our grade-wide curriculum night a week into school- pretty clear the other parents are even more upset than I am). principal and admins are very aware and responsive- so hopefully we'll get this sorted before the kid graduates to middle school.

Side note and apologies to all in advance, but how to you guys say the word "coupon"?  My wife and her whole family pronounce it Q-pon.  I don't know why.  There's no 'Q'.  It's a COU-pon....like a military coup, right?

TLDR: Berndog vents about doctors and his sick kid

Nothing is worse than having a sick kid.   I returned home from a fishing trip Sunday night and after a weekend of inebriation and a 8 hour drive was looking forward to crawling into my bed.  Instead I headed to the emergency room with my son.  Around 1 AM we drove across town as he was admitted to a hospital with a pediatric unit.  All symptoms pointed to his appendix.  CT scan did not back this up and the doctor turned into a freaking jerk when I mentioned 2 of my friends had a burst appendix after clear CT scans. 

Doctor said he was constipated and gave him ridiculous amounts of laxative, so much laxative he had no idea when he #### the bed.  Of course he was still in immense pain and the doctor then diagnosed it as a muscle strain.  We go round and round as my wife and I ask questions about other symptoms and are summarily blown off including our request for a second opinion.  On Tuesday night he is discharged and the intense abdominal pain has not subsided.  Pissed off but glad to be away from Dr. Mengele we regroup at home and make an appointment with our pediatrician.  My wife just called me from her office and he has been readmitted to the hospital.  To make things more difficult my 1 year old phone up and died.  Praying they fix him soon. 

 
Good luck to you, your son and your whole family.  That sucks.  I know updating us is the last thing on your mind, but hoping the next Berndog report is filled with better news and perhaps a good FIL story.

 
FIL and MIL are currently staying with us which was totally unrelated to my sons illness.  As much as he is crazy it is nice to have family able to watch my other kids.   Outside of some Trump rants nothing noteworthy yet but there hasn't been much time for hilarity as Casa Berndog.

 
Headed to the hospital now and am phone-less so it will be awhile before there are any updates some I truly appreciate the well wishes.

No, but it was the very last piece left, which always makes me feel a little guilty as - despite my fatassedness - I don't usually go for sweets or desserts and leave them for the wife and kids.  I felt less guilty after the first few bites.  That Swans makes a mean little pie.

Good luck.  My son had something similar last year and basically ended up being his intestines telescoping over each other.  They gave him an IV and eventually he took a huge dump and felt fine.

But yeah ran through the whole gamut of appendix, intestinal blockage, etc

Yes, definitely good luck.

All of life's little dramas that we BS about in here pale in comparison to a sick kid.

BTW, you aren't fooling anyone...."Hee Haw" wasn't airing anywhere in 1563.  There wasn't even television yet.

 
Semi-related: I just applied someplace for a teaching position(kind of).  The application asked "What would be the determining factor of you accepting a position with Institution X if offered?"  I answered without hesitation "It's my understanding that all teaching positions have Summers off, so I guess that."

Yeah, worst part about eating Sunday dinners at my grandma's house.  She only got 3 channels and so it was Lawrence Welk and Hee-Haw.
