Things have changes since I was in high school.  4.0 was a perfect GPA when I was in school.  You couldn't do better.  What is it out of now?
same for me.

now kids get more than 4 on grades.... thus my goes to 11 comment.

eta: per wiki again...

Some high schools, to reflect the varying skill required for different level courses and to discourage students from selecting courses that are considered a source of easy 'A's, will give higher numerical grades for difficult courses, often referred to as a weighted GPA. For example, two common conversion systems used in honors and advanced placement courses are:

  • A = 5.0 or 4.5
  • B = 4 or 3.5
  • C = 3 or 2.5
  • D = 2 or 1.5
  • E/F = 0[10]
Denver Public Schools uses a different system in honors and AP courses to get weighted GPA values; the scale is as follows: A = 5.2 A- = 4.77 B+ = 4.33 B = 3.9 B- = 3.47 C+ = 3.0 C = 2.6 C- = 2.17 D = 1.3 E = 0.0

Another policy commonly used by 4.0-scale schools is to mimic the eleven-point weighted scale (see below) by adding a .33 (one third of a letter grade) to an honors or advanced placement class. (For example, a B in a regular class would be a 3.0, but in an honors or AP class it would become a B+, or 3.33).

Sometimes the 5-based weighting scale is used for AP courses and the 4.6-based scale for honors courses, but often a school will choose one system and apply it universally to all advanced courses. A small number of high schools use a 5-point scale for Honors courses, a 6-point scale for AP courses, and/or a 3-point scale for courses of below average difficulty.

Although weighting GPAs is a widespread practice in the United States, there is little research into whether weighted GPAs are better than unweighted GPAs. In one study, weighted GPAs were not suitable for predicting any college outcomes, but unweighted GPA were strong predictors of college GPA.[11] However, standardized test scores were better predictors than either type of GPA.[11]

If 4.0 is now a B/B+, that's really lame to have that as a qualifier for valedictorian, although it certainly makes sense as to why there were 142 valedictorians.  Participation trophy indeed.

weighted GPA

http://blog.prepscholar.com/whats-a-weighted-gpa-how-to-calculate-it

A weighted GPA is a GPA that takes the difficult of your classes into account along with your grades. On a typical unweighted scale (which is solely based on grades and not on the difficulty of your classes), GPAs are recorded as numbers ranging from 0 to 4.0. This scale is why the ideal of the perfect 4.0 GPA exists.

If your school uses weighted GPAs, however, the scale goes up higher. Typically a weighted GPA scale ranges from 0 to 5.0. This is to accommodate grades in AP or Honors courses, where an A on the weighted scale translates to a 5.0 based on the difficulty of the class. Low-level classes maintain the typical unweighted scale, where an A translates into a 4.0. Many schools also offer mid-level classes between Honors and low-level classes where an A translates into a 4.5.

This means that someone who takes more difficult courses throughout high school will end up with a higher weighted GPA than someone who takes less difficult courses even if their actual grades are identical.

A weighted scale does make some sense to me. I was always frustrated that I took a ton of honors classes that were much more work than the normal classes and my grades counted exactly the same as students doing easier and less work.

I'm completely onboard with pot being legal, but is it too much to ask to be able to walk somewhere in my neighborhood or on a trail without smelling weed?

I smelled it strongly picking my son up from a study group at one of his friend's house.  Surprisingly, I was not the culprit.

I'm a vaper now.

Nevermind.  Now I'm in an alley waiting for a movie, and it smells like piss here instead.  All is well.

I don't mind the smell usually, but I'd just like a little break from it now and then.

Did you determine the culprit?
Oh yeah. It was another dad picking up his son Brian.  Brian is a rotund kid who wears flat bill hats and GnR t-shirts.  He's gotten Coop into rock music of our generation so I'm very much on board with this friendship.  Kinda want to hang out with his dad now.

I was bored today so I took an empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with vanilla pudding and then ate it in public.  Got a lot of funny looks.

I'm at a bar and they are replaying the UNC vs Stanford Sun Bowl.  I have some bad news, Bears' fans.  The next spiral I see from your new QB will be his first.  He's thrown 28 times.  He looks like Charlie Hough.

Love this post so hard.

Lotta Bear fans are optimistic about this guy.  I've been down this road* before.

So first of all, semi charmed life was a great song.

Second, how can you not like the band saying I can't believe you have us a Grammy for a song about heroin while accepting their Grammy for a song most people liked because they said do do do, do do doo do .

Also third eye blind was big when I hooked up with that girl in Arizona that I always wondered about afterwards.

But most importantly they were a big part of the soundtrack to an otherwise ####ty and forgettable teen movie called can't hardly wait which featured Jennifer love Hewitt at her Jennifer love Hewittest, that I listened to the first time I ate magic mushrooms and had epiphanies I can no longer explain while listening to early 90s pop music and I will fight anyone who says that they weren't awesome.

genuinely appreciated... so it is like you or somebody said originally- a participation trophy.

I guess if 1/3 of their kids are getting straight As... that must be an epic amazing school- so who are we to judge?

anybody. please.

is it a high school that's just pass/fail?
Many high schools have weighted grade points now, where an A in an honors class is worth more than an A in a regular class.  It's possible this particular high school made anyone over a 4.0 a valedictorian.  Stupid all around.

Make sure you get Aaron to confirm this

Sitting at a bar in the Denver airport some large gal sits durn add asks the bartender if there's anything to eat less than $3.

Nope.

Then she says she's not even 21 and then the bartender says you can't sit at the bar. She refused to leave then asked for a menu then left when she saw the salads cost $15

I see this has been covered.  MY BAD.

Poor people are funny. Was she fat, too?

First world problems:  made plans to hang out with my daughter this weekend:  fishing, tubing, movie, take her shopping.  She ditched me to spend the weekend on her friend's dad's yacht.  Now I have nothing to do for the three day weekend and everyone already has plans.

Luckily I like fishing alone and I'm pretty sure I can find someone new who wants to go boating.
