I'm sensing a lot of hostility from you.  Have you ever tried yoga?

Found out in the last couple weeks that my mom's cancer isn't contained in her uterus, when they did a hysterectomy they found cancer cells in lymph nodes too. So she finds out on Thursday what treatment is going to look like, and she's not looking forward to chemo.

Also found out that my mother in law's issues stem from bone marrow cancer. She finds out in a similar timeframe what her treatment looks like.

This is on top of my FIL having 3-5 years with stage 4 prostate cancer.

#### cancer.
Good Lord.  :(

Thropawishes to a all of your parents and parents-in-law.
This. And agree #### cancer.

Damn.  Very sorry.

I'm bored.  I think I am going to go to the airport and leave a bag unattended.
In a similar vain my building was evacuated today due to a bomb threat.  Almost felt bad for those people who had to hoof it down 20 flights of stairs.

Portland is neat.

Can't buy a #### hole house for less than 400,000 and you get stabbed for calling out Nazis.

floppinho's best friend just got selected- kind of*- for a travel baseball team. they had a series of games over the weekend and showed up late to a small party we had our house. the mom is japanese and was trying her best to explain the hell that was the parents, players and coaches screaming bloody murder for 3 straight days at every play. at the opposing team, at their own team, at the umpires, at the other parents, at their own parents, at the other coaches, at their own coaches... basically at anybody within ear-shot. japanese mom was definitely not used to this kind of americana.

I remember the occasional parent (including my dad) yelling at games... but not like this. has it gotten worse over the years? or could this have just been a particularly bad group of people (greenwich village parents = $$/entitled/uptight, IME)

*kind of = they were selected provisionally... so apparently still a lot of stress about making the final team, which the dad seems to think promoted more yelling thatn normal yelling.

It's a little better, but the commute back to Portland is a ####### disaster.
But.....you work in Vancouver.

This housing market is dumb.  1500 s.ft house near us just went for $470K.  Got like $310 a sq.ft....that's insane.  And I'm in Beaverton and nobody likes Beaverton.

Sounds like Portland's got you down. Sorry buddy. :(

I know that you know that I know you I know... but for S&Gs... the apartment next to ours- 2br, 2ba, 1300sf- just sold for 2.08m. new building across the street (and going up around Katz's deli) has 500sf studios starting at 1.1m.

as a renter, I am totally ####ed if I have to move.

The significant downside of this is that then you live in Vancouver, WA
no state income tax and seems very close to downtown Portland.

also, I read some article recently that really talked up vancouver, wa as a place that is turning around quickly with good schools and parks, etc.

real estate in Portand seems pretty nuts, so wondered how far it was spreading. also, as far as I know, 'hack works in vancouver

Maggie works in the Pearl.  Even so...we moved out here to live in Portland.

We're putting down an offer today on house in St. Johns.

It's just okay.  The small downtown area of Vancouver is decent, but I haven't seen much else in and around Vancouver that is very appealing.

FWIW, I think this was the magazine article I read recently:

Where Portlandia goes to grow up

If you’re relocating to Portland and want the best value for your money, there’s a good chance you won’t be house-shopping in Portland. Or even in Oregon. You’ll be looking in Vancouver. Not the Vancouver in Canada but the one across the Columbia River from PDX, in income-tax-free Washington State. Here’s why: You have kids. That’s what happened to Jody Bamford, who moved with her husband and their young daughter from a condo near the Pearl District to the suburban city six years ago. “So many families are moving to Vancouver because the public schools are all very good,” says Bamford. But the city has a lot more going for it than high test scores. “It’s so peaceful, with wide streets and sidewalks and maple trees in storybook neighborhoods,” she says. “And every little neighborhood has its own park—from our house, there are two within walking distance. It’s like Vancouver was built for kids.” The five-year-old Vancouver Community Library definitely was. The third floor looks like a children’s museum, with tipis and a kitchen area, plus a cafe on the first floor. “We hang out there a lot when it rains,” says Bamford.

EDIT: I realize the "family-friendly" stuff doesn't necessarily appeal, but was just curious since I knew you worked up there.

borrow a Google street view camera

The Google Street View camera loan program is here to help you share 360 experiences from amazing places around the world via Google Maps

This program is open to pro photographers, travelers, and organizations (such as tourism boards, non-profits, government agencies, universities or research groups). It’s also open to others seeking to promote areas of cultural, historical or touristic significance as well as those who intend to photograph business interiors. Under this program, we may offer to lend you a Street View Trekker backpack or a Street View app-compatible 360 camera, depending on availability and what may best match your needs.

So I'm on a flight to Vegas.  Tried to connect to Wi-Fi but PayPal needs to send me a text that I can't receive.  So I can't access Facebook or any other site but the ffa.  Did I just commit some kind of crime and are they going to drag me off the plane?

Fwiw, the Google pixel phone comes with a 360deg app for the phone that does this. I think it's also...

Oh #### it. I gave up caring enough to finish my thought

Yes. But make sure to resist violently.

Between looking at rentals in Orange Co., CA last month and hearing everyone in here talking about housing costs in the PNW....I fear I am going to have my foot nailed to the floor in Florida forever (unless I get divorced).   And that makes me want to absolutely vomit.

I lived in Vancouver.  It sucked.  That drive becomes tedious.  But that was in the 90s.  There's much more to do there now, but the drive is much much MUCH worse with the traffic.  Also, the people of Vancouver can be a bit.....methy.

cleaning out my garage this weekend. moved some old, heavy, rusted out, metal shelves to the curb. they were heavy as #### and falling apart as i dragged them.. took me a while to maneuver them to the curb.

not more than 10 minutes later a scrawny, toothless, middle aged couple that couldn't have been more than 200 lbs combined rolled up in a giant truck.

the power of meth (apparently?) compelled them to hoist that shelving in to their truck bed in less than a minute. i stood there in awe watching and said "wow, i have no idea how you guys just did that. took me half an hour to drag them down from my driveway."

the little guy cackled and yelped "METAL, MAN!! ####ING METAL!!" then hopped in his truck and sped off

The metal scrappers must have drones all over or something.  Replaced our dryer last year, hauled it to the curb with my dad, went back inside and looked out the window and a guy had already pulled up with a van, opened the side door and pushed the dryer in.   I live on a street that is only a block long, has a T intersection at one end and a school at the other so there is no reason to drive down my street.    Same thing happened when I redid the bathroom, took 10 minutes and an older guy was trying to lift the bathtub into the back of a pickup.  Watched him struggle for a few minutes then went to help him.
