Not at all.  While I understand wanting some notice to plan something, a free extra day off is a free extra day off.  Unless they are taking away a vacation day or a different holiday or a floating holiday you can use at your own leisure, I can't understand complaining about an extra day off.

You should rebel against the company's leaders.  I did it once.  In an act of rebellion I scratched the words “place stool sample here” on the lunch room table at my office, but it backfired when it just became the thing to do.

and maybe kids under 10 if there are other kids under 10 there

otherwise, what a completely miserable waste of time and money. nobody is happy during the process. especially not the bride & groom.

Depends. Do you have a weiner? If so, you're not off base at all.

Would lots of notice have been nice? Of course. But a day off with short notice beats a day at work eight days a week and twice on Sunday.

the office decided just now to close next monday (july 3rd) to allow people a longer weekend.

while it would've been nice to have known this earlier so we could plan something, or afford tickets that weren't jacked up on short notice.. still nice to have the extra day off, especially tied to a long weekend.

the wife's reaction.. pissed.  

2 weeks ago my company sent out an email saying we got Monday off as a paid holiday. And since the contractor I'm supervising right now has been working 4 10s, that meant a 5 day weekend. Sweet!

Only, the contractor ended up needing to work 5 8s this week, so Friday out the window.

And I got put on another project starting next week where the contractor is working Monday, so I'm working Monday now too. Neat.

And since we'll be off on the 4th, the contractor will be working next Saturday to make their 40, which means I'll be working next Saturday. 

Double neat.

So went from a 5 day weekend to a regular weekend, the 4th off, and then having to work Saturday.
