I'm focused on the sportsbook and hookers ratio.
Oh, well, hell....Reno has you covered and it's cheap.

Of course, you can't care about "quality" so much.

nyc or sf isn't going to really help with getting a better bang for your buck.
Indeed.  Regardless, I am eternally grateful you made multiple attempts.

I'm in a smallish desert town a couple hours from LA and too close to Bakersfield. I'm basically retired, but open to ideas there too.
Want to fund a "creative think tank?"  I can guarantee getting sit downs with at least three experts in their field who'd be interested in something like that (and not working for The Man anymore). :)   You can take all the glory and go to all the awards ceremonies and banquets/golf while the work gets done.

I looked around Reno when you were there. I even recall asking if you'd check a place out for me. Honestly, I know there's some big Reno fans here at FBG, but it felt like a bigger version of where I already am and it sucks. With a couple exceptions everyone I know and love )(irl) is in the "tri cities" of LA, SD, and LV. Draw a circle around that part of the world and I'm home. Except for 5 years of college in Chico, I've spent my life here.

Yeah, I do recall we talked about that.  You had family in the area, right? Sparks?

I certainly only would want to live in a couple of very narrow bands of the area.  It's biggest draw is that right now it's still cheap and with Tesla etc relocating there within the next year or so the property values will probably zoom up.  And the proximity to Tahoe.  But I hear you.

#### it. Just do Tonopah. :)   You could probably buy the whole town for a dollar.  Plus you'd get your own haunted, clown-themed motel as part of the bargain.

I did some careful triangulation and input a quick algorithm I generated... voyla

Also, I'm alone. Nest is empty. The kid flew off to college. Sticking a for sale sign in my dirt this weekend. House shopping in Vegas next week. Any better ideas?
i have an older brother. when he left for college the year before my parents left his room as is. always a welcome home to come back to.

i left for college at 17. didn't come back home until christmas break because i had no means to do so. parents decided i didn't need to stay there. my room was no longer mine.

neat times

years later i was told that i wasn't welcome in their home anymore. at all. period.

parents are the best

:(  You and roverfish don't seem to have done well in the parental lottery.

did anything precipitate this? is your brother a favorite child and you're the outside? were you a real **** as a kid? trying to understand, gb. your room is still the same and waiting for you at our place.

50/50

my mom is a terrific person. just took her a while to come around to ol' furley. as she told me once about 15 years ago "i hate(d) you because you remind me of your father".

we look alike, sound alike, same'ish mannerisms. so through no fault of my own & totally unbeknownst to me, i was the object of her anger because she wasn't allowed to be mad at him.

he's an effing disaster who saw me as a challenge to his authority so he had to let me know, constantly, that he was in charge in ways large and small.

we're here now, though. so..

Glad she was self-aware enough to understand what her issues were and come around.

i'm the youngest brother. far back as i could remember my parents always treated us much, much differently. young parents. by the time i was born the waters were troubled so in retrospect the difference in treatment came about because they were max stressed out due to a number of factors.

wasn't any different than most kids, i suppose. just was used as a proxy for two adults to fight. that made me angry and i probably wasn't a great kid as a result but not a horrible person, either.

it was one of those deals whereby my parents made sure to attend all my brother's events, let him go on the field trips, the vacation with friends, etc. and i got... none of that. if we both had games at the same time, well, there's your bike.. the doors will be unlocked when you get back home. if it was a day where only i had a game.. sometimes one would show up.

my old man coached us in football so he was there for that but not as a parent, if you know what i mean.

I like pineapple on pizza but, other than tomatoes, I don't think I've ever had any other type of fruit on one. Love a good veggie pizza, though.

Oh, FFS.....

So I make the stupid joke about pumpkin spice pizza earlier and later am confronted with this, posted just today.

Which one of you mother####ers is Maki Nauro IRL?  I refuse to believe the Universe cares enough about your ol' buddy to mock me directly THAT fast.

thanks for the explanation, gb. sucks (the story, not the explanation). did they stay together? can't imagine shutting my kids out of my life like that... even though ####### 6yo floppinha can't stop crying and I'm ready to kick her out permanently. so maybe i can imagine.

one of my gbs from college was in a similar deal as the youngest- older brother was the golden child and he was ugly duckling... european parents (german and polish), so he was never going to get the lovey-social/emotional kind of environment for either of them.. .but in terms of whatever support they gave, golden-child got everything and ugly duckling got obviously less. still continues that way with the sole-surviving mom who basically pays for big brother and his kid to do whatever they want while my gb is left to pay for himself for everything (does crazily well, so money not an issue for him as it is with his architect big brother).

I'm pro pineapple on pineapple on pizza

While I have my favorite toppings I don't think there is a standard Pizza topping combination I would refuse to eat if it was presented to me

nope. they stayed together about 35 years too long. split now for the last 3 years or so.

this story always makes me crazy.. my brother had a paper route. he decided it was too big for him so i was made to take half. he then decided he didn't want it anymore so i got the whole thing. that was the afternoon route.

then i got a morning route. then i got a weekend morning route.

i never saw a penny of collection money. my parents spent it. we were not well off but... ####### hell.

jeebus.

at least they didn't give the money to your older brother... I thought for sure that's where it was heading.

how do you get on with him? is that relationship fractured too?

consider me in.

I anticipate we will be moving in by mid-September, but some of the interior and exterior finish work will still be ongoing.

Floors are mostly in. Still tile going in to a couple bathrooms. Still waiting on carpet, which is only in about 20% of the house.

Cabinets are being hung in kitchen, laundry room, and vanities are being installed.

Final electrical trim is in about half the house.

There is still lots going on.

Sometime over the weekend it appears that thieves came and made off with some of my contractor's gear. It is odd though, because while they took a couple valuable pieces of equipment, they left a bunch of other stuff that they could have taken.

I was going to suggest Bombay Beach. It's...affordable.
That freaked me out a little like maybe I'm being stalked on my private social media. Long Bombay Beach story unfolded last week. Short version. Three young ladies I know very well (may or may not be related) saw a list of little known must sees in CA. The list was a joke. The ditzes didn't know. The DROVE to Bombay Beach in JULY. Got stuck in the sand. Were frightened of the "neighborhood". Called me about 2:30 and said Mazda roadside was sending someone. I offered to go. They said no. Three hours later, I would have been there, but help wasn't. Mazda finally found someone willing. He was in Mexico, crossing the border. WTF!? I offered again. It was 114 outside. Mexican shows up in a F150 and gets stuck. Calls it quicksand. Calls a buddy in Mexicali for help. This guy shows up at 8 and works on the truck, not the girl's Mazda. I call the sheriff. It's now pitch black on Bombay Beach, Mexicans got the truck out but not the Mazda. I call the Sheriff. Girl tells Mexican Sheriff is coming. Mazda out of the sand in three minutes flat. WTF!?!?

Haha. Weird.

No, I am not stalking you. But I had to work to come up with someplace significantly worse than Bakersfield. (tanner ->  :bye: )

are the painters able to get any work done yet? or waiting on the other trades to clear out?

Last time I visited this thread, months ago, you were destroying a perfectly lovely kitchen. Is this that or a new house?

sucked until college

then we both came to the realization that it was our parents who ####ed everything up. we're best of friends now.

It's the same remodel.

The old kitchen was anything but lovely.

Recent Pic - This was taken while we were assembling base cabinet boxes. Most of the base cabinets are currently hung.

The floors are also in now, except immediately around the cabinets.

The painters had a gap in their schedule and came in and painted everywhere that was ready for them, which was most of the house. There were some areas that weren't quite ready for paint because of dry wall patches or skim coating that needed to be sanded. Wife 2.0 and I are doing some painting ourselves on weekends and evenings. I painted in college, so I am decent at it (though far from a pro).

Ouch. I hate being under construction, but then when I have I endured living on the premises. Sounds like you moved out. And that kitchen was nicer than any I ever had. But I might buy this, which comes with this. Kind of excited about this.

Reading a book called "Ghost Mountain Boys" about the battle for New Guinea during WWII. What an absolutely brutal landscape and battle.

I'm not all that fantastically well read on WWII so I feel ignorant (because I am obviously) about some of this stuff. From this book, it sure seems like General MacArthur was both an egotistical jerk that cared more about himself and his reputation than his troops, and a terrible tactician.

And knowing that my great uncle was one of these Ghost Mountain Boys, I now understand his voluminous consumption of moonshine throughout his life.

We have never moved in. We sold our old house and are in my wife's old house (we were only married a few years ago) while the remodel is ongoing.

We were supposed to be here two months. We have been here four, so far.

While we are both excited about the final product, the experience has been, quite simply, awful. I mean I knew it would likely take longer and cost more than we expected, but the degree to which those two things have come true has been shocking. And disastrous.

Those photos of your prospective abode look fantastic.
