whoa. What were the circumstances? What the hell happened?
work on the architectural side of the office has been really, really slow. I've been helping out with the interiors side doing things I should never be doing.

it's not a giant surprise given that- and they've kept me around previuosly when work has dried up. I made sure it wasn't anything about my work (it wasn't). but we had a couple projects about to start (that have been "about to start" for a few month) that they just couldn't wait on any more. if they start before I find new work, they're bringing me back.

I'm still in shock/#### mode. with a family of four and living in NYC, I need the paychecks- so I can't afford to sit around and wait.

Sorry flop - things like this end up working out for the better ...keep the faith.

Ouch. Good luck.

Damn, Sorry to hear this, Flop.

i don't know how the scarf world* works, but that bit about bringing you back if the jobs start, just seems like horse ####.  find something better!

*fancy doodlers ;)

This ####### sucks.

But boss and office manager we're both very warm, appreciative, apologetic. Every other person that's been let go is pushed out the door before saying bye to anybody. Everybody's offering to make inroads for me elsewhere, which is better than a kick in the ###. And a months severance... Which will hopefully buy me enough time to find what's next.

But this ####### sucks.

Haven't told the wife yet. ####. Can't stand the thought of seeing the kids. ####.

So sorry man. Wish I could help.

Sorry, EF.   If you want to move to Washington, I know an architect who is swamped with work and looking for help.   May not be your specialty.

If I moved to washington, it sounds like I could just run the ol' bait and switch game out there. (sorry redmond)

thanks everybody.

my wife was shocked, but ultimately feels like I'll end up with something better or better paying. that my office was keeping me stuck professionally... which is pretty true, even though it's allowed me a great deal of freedom with the kids.

Well, ####.  That blows, brother.

Wish I knew anyone I could make inquiries with for you, but I haven't had a ton of overlap into your realm over the years.  I'll run it up the flagpole in my network anyway.  I may be forgetting someone.  Never know and its the least I can do.

Let me know if there's any other way I may be able to assist.

thanks again for the thoughts everybody.

Told my oldest last night... Told him I was looking for better work so would be around more until I get it. Tried to phrase it as a positive action on my part... He gets really emotional about things, so I don't want him worrying about me or us. Seemed to work.

I've got a meeting at 10 with the top headhunter in my stupid field. Looks like there's a bunch of stuff out there, so hopefully this is a kick in the butt towards something better.

Linked In can be a good resource too

On a lighter note (sorta) - my stepson (16) is fighting a sore throat and can't talk much, so he's running some amusing post-it note shtick.

The other night he came down and got some Nyquil from our main bathroom.  Left some notes around like "your closet is shite" (where the meds are) and "ugh, nasty but seems to be working".

This morning, there's a note on a jug of apple cider/juice: "Label says 'cider' but really just juice.  Still good sh!t though"

Flop, any thoughts on moving? I know it's a tough decision and easy to say from an internet person who doesn't personally know you, your kids, your life, etc.....but the US (or even the world) is a big place. I would think that certain cities would be in a much bigger need of experienced architects than others.

Just a thought....good luck either way.

Now go make your family some pancakes!

We're pretty happy here, other than being po folk in the big city. The wife is currently being head hunted for a position in design mecca Antwerp, Belgium... Big enough move for you?

Good luck to you Floppo. Hopefully this opens up opportunities that put you in a better place than you were in before.

I just got laid off.

fml.
i almost "liked" this, because i like most of your posts and even though i don't know you in real life, think you're pretty cool.

sorry to hear, but things happen for a reason and i'm 100% positive that you'll end up better off because of this.
