12:01am - pill

6:01am - pill

6:02 am - I leave the house.  I'm gone!  Per the instructions, I stop taking the pills (take until gone!)

6:01pm - I return to the house.  Am I supposed to take the pills again?  It's not really clear.

I'm pretty sure this is the origin of the debate.  I say take one.  Which means the next one is at 12:01 the next day.  So, three!  Ha.  I solved it.

Well, the number taken on the first and last days depend on time of day you start taking them.  But other than that, it is four per day.  If you start at 5 am, you take one at 5, one at 11, one at 5, and one at 11.

If you start at 6 am, it's 6/12/6/12(next day - which means four the next day at 12/6/12/6)

I don't understand what the confusion is.
Confusion is that some people sleep 8 hours a night. You wake up at 7, take a pill. Take another pill at 1. Then another at 7. You go to bed at 10:00. You supposed to set the alarm to take a pill at 1am, or take a pill 3 hours early?

so the other interpretation is that you are supposed to take a pill every 6 hours during your waking hours.

What kind of slacker sleeps more than six hours in a stretch? Not krista, that's for sure.

:oldunsure:

Oh, I get it now. It's mr. krista that's being obtuse.

Let's pretend the instructions say "Take one capsule every six hours" instead of "Take one capsule by mouth every six hours until gone."  Does this help you answer the #######ed question?
Until the medicine is gone or the person taking it by mouth is gone? It’s critical to solving this riddle.

This is different.

If you're asking what the bottle says, the answer is 4.

If you're asking what the average female is going to do, the answer is 4.

If you're asking what the average male is going to do, the answer is somewhere between 0 and 8, depending on the day, wtf is going on, how they're feeling, if they intend to have drinks that night, how many drinks they intend to have that night, how long ago the last dose was that they missed, whether symptoms persist, if it's for something minor like a sinus infection or something someone will see when naked, what the side effects might be, whether or not those side effects are potentially positive, and a whole host of things I'm sure I'm not even considering because wtf, who goes to the doctor if they aren't dying?

So weird that I can't remember if I took the pills I need to, but always know that I took the ones that I want to.

A prescription for an antibiotic says, "Take one capsule by mouth every six hours until gone."  How many capsules per day (Sunday, Monday, etc.) should the person take?
2 or 3 per day depending on how many hours you are awake per day. If the Dr wanted you to wake up to take them, the instructions would include that verbiage.

The debate is about (1) the answer to the question, and (2) whether that answer is obvious/clear or if there is ambiguity.
Just to be clear, it has to be a number and not just a great dance move or something?

4. Duh. Unless you choose out of the "by mouth" option.

New Riddle: What do you get when you mix your neighbor’s 25 foot tree, a 16foot ladder, and your 12 year old daughter?

Answer: A couple of scratches because cats are ungrateful #######s.

Seems like the "4" people are awfully certain about it.
That’s because if you add six hours, you don’t take the next pill 11 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds later. If you truly add exactly six hours, it’s impossible to take more than 4 in a day. Some are suggesting the one you take to start means that 24 hours later when you take one it’s “within 24 hours.”  But it isn’t  it’s 24 hours later. Take the first pill at exactly midnight and count days of the week as your 24 hour periods and it becomes clear.

The second midnight is neither part of the same day nor part of the same 24 hours.
