GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (9 Viewers)

If I'm not around tomorrow, it's because of the "Fat people should be slaughtered so I don't have to sit next to them on the plane" thread.

Taliesin is absolutely amazing. The 4 hour estate tour I went on today barely scratched  the surface of what’s going on there and it’s creator.  Loved it, @krista4. I want to take Mrs. O there the next time we’re in Wisconsin.

Skipped Cave of the Mounds and went to New Glarus Brewery right away. That’s when the crappy part of my day started. No parking to speak of and it was packed. I mean 2 lines for tickets for beers 20 deep each packed. Bought a cool glass and left within 10 minutes. Stopped by Total Wine and got some New Glarus and other singles on the way back into town. Avoid New Glarus at all costs this holiday weekend. Listen to Admiral Ackbar. Ugh
Haven’t done that one but have a friend who has a high ranking job at Taliesin West in Arizona. It’s amazing.

Yesterday was my last day at the office.

My boss weirdly chose not to tell one of my clients about my departure, in spite of a big design meeting on Thursday with clients, gc and interior designer. Clients were setting up meetings with me during the meeting for next week as I shook me head ok. Had a chance to say bye and thanks to my other client and gc yesterday at a different meeting, who were appreciative of my work.

A little sad to say bye to the office- nice group of people. Also weirdly, my boss left without bothering to say bye, thanks, nothing. I had wanted to express my appreciation and explain more fully why I was leaving, but whatever.

Cautiously hopeful but nervous about new office. Mostly worried about dynamic working under a bigger ego than previous boss in a place that has a notoriously high turn over. But my previous office (before this recent one) was the guy who ran the new office's interiors department for a long time, and the offices seem very similar in terms of output and operation (granted 12 people vs 120)...and I like and am hopeful about that familiarity.

Week off between jobs next week- no plans.

Met with my plastic surgeon Tuesday.  Nice guy.  And he may or may not have done work on Rita Wilson (Mrs. Tom Hanks) based on an autographed pic I saw in his office.

All set for surgeries on 9/23.  Maybe 3 days in the hospital and a week of recovery at home.  I’m all broken up over missing 2 weeks of school.

Schwantz reduction?

Eta... GL- hope it's all in the rear view mirror for you. And that if this is your goal, it works out to your expectations

Nah. Plastic surgery is needed because when my actual surgeon removes my tumor(s) and parotid gland I will end up with a divot in my face.

Here is a weird fun fact: My plastic surgeon will be inserting some artificial tissue where the gland was.  He has to put it between the skin and some nerves to act as a barrier.

Why (besides divot replacement)?  The parotid gland produces saliva.

If the gland is removed and the nerves are left in contact with the skin...your face will sweat instead of your mouth watering.  You brain will sense “mmmm food” and the nerves will try to send a message to the now-missing salivary gland.  Instead tour cheek will sweat.

I told my doctor “so if I walk by a Cinnabon I’m going to need to mop my face with a hankie like a Southern lawyer in an old time courtroom movie?”

I hope the surgery goes well.
Me too.  There is a very important facial nerve in the same area.  I don’t know the name of it but I call it the Carl Spagler nerve.  It will be weakened but it should recover quickly.

This was pretty awesome.  My surgeon is literally one of the best in the world when it comes to head and neck tumors.

When we were discussing all of this my wife asked “So is the a risk of the nerve being permanently damaged?”

Doc say “If you’re asking if it will be weakened, then yes.  But it will recover. If you’re asking me if I will accidentally start cutting and cause permanent damage....100% no.  THIS is what I do.  Period.”

That Longhorn loss would hurt, except I've had seven Captain and Diets and this tall, nerdy chick told me I have nice hair.  :bowtie:

Dave update

He moved from Indianapolis up to Grand Rapids a couple of weeks ago to a new rehab place, but over the weekend moved back close to home now in a nursing home.  Basically the rehab place said he wasn't going to progress any further until his brain has more time to heal, and they recommended moving him over continuing to take his wife's :moneybag:  for no benefit. (Insurance stopped covering rehab several weeks back because he wasn't progressing fast enough for them, so she had been paying out of pocket.) On the plus side, the insurance will cover the nursing home, and later, in-home nursing care; just not rehab at this point.

He knows people, has pretty good hand-eye coordination (they posted a vid of him batting a balloon with a badminton racquet a week or so back), but still has some disconnects coming up with words, or associating movement with an instruction.  E.g., he can play Uno, but tends to grip the cards too tightly for his other hand to pull one out to play.  During the aneurysm, he ended up with a lot of blood in between the brain hemispheres, and also had some vascular spasms, all of which caused some damage that's going to take time to heal.  But cognitively, he seems to be "there" and talks with his wife about how they'll look back and laugh.

So, right now there's some waiting.  Meantime, his wife is having some work done to make their house accessible for him, at which point he'll move back to his house until he's ready to go back into rehab.  They're also lining up a physiatrist in town to coordinate all of his medical needs. They want to check his eyes some more to see if the other one (that didn't already have surgery) might still  need some work, and also to see if there's any vocal cord damage (he can speak, but it's very soft and they're wondering if there's a blockage or something).

And while I'm providing updates, I'll also take some TPW for my dad.  He's 93 and was recently diagnosed with AFIB and a couple of leaky heart valves, so he can only be on his feet for a few minutes before getting completely out of breath.  So if he gets up and goes to the bathroom, by the time he sits back in his chair he's sucking wind for 2-3 minutes.

Cardiologist put him on Eliquis and a water pill last week and he goes back in 3 weeks, so we'll see how it goes, but he's adamant that he's not having any surgery (and the cardiologist didn't recommend it either).  So basically he's got a 93.5 year old heart and there's not much that can be done to repair it.

My folks are both otherwise healthy and no cognitive issues, which I know puts me (and them!) in a small, good category.  They're celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary today.

Hug the ones, you love, GMTAN.

Hope the meds do the trick for heckdad.

I gave that post a like for the loving couple and the 74 years,  not cheering on your Dad's health problems.

It was great getting lunch with El Floppo today.  We went to Fraunces Tavern, which is one of the few buildings still standing in NYC that dates back to before the revolutionary war.  Fraunces Tavern is where George Washington met with his top generals after the war to say good bye and have a party.  IIRC, it's been a tavern and/or a hotel since then, although now the hotel part is a museum now.

Scarf and no pants?  So, you opted for the "Architect's Delight" then?

Well played.
Man, times have changed.  That used to be the “Howard Hughes.”

First day.

Sitting in a conference room waiting to meet the team (after meeting with HR and the longest confidentiality agreement I've ever seen, including some things I don't love). Got a tour of the office, where the Hr manager was terrified to walk in front of the boss's office...led me by almost at a sprint while whispering to not make any noise.

First client is apparently the widow of a public somebody I don't like (never met- don't like the public persona and works).

Doubts and second-guessing this decision creeping in fast...
