Not to belabor the worry, but for this kid, as a Type 1 Diabetic, he's going to require expensive insulin the rest of his life. Right now, he's covered on insurance through me and his mom, so things are okay - out of pocket costs are manageable with double coverage.

That goes away when he turns 26 and the clocks aren't running backwards anytime soon, I don't think. So, college might not be his path forward and that's fine, but employment is going to need to either provide some affordable healthcare for him or provide him with enough money to buy his own healthcare plan, which might be really hard with a preexisting condition. This keeps me up at night when other things get parked away.

Alright, enough. Somebody fart or make fun of an architect's' wardrobe or something.

And my son is going on a HS trip to Spain for 2 weeks. Maybe they can hook up. God bless financial aid covering even stuff like this for us. The Physics of sailing in Mallorca. It doesn't get more private NYC HS than that.
I swear to baby jeebus' scarves it's like we don't even live on the same planet sometimes.
Fwiw... We don't live on the same planet as these folks either, but they let my kids go to school there in a way that even I can afford. And not remotely planetarily near the 70k the rest of the aliens are paying.

Hey... At least our healthcare and insurance system makes for fun times.

My My Mallorca. Think we all need to go back to HS and learn how to sail.

Lol.. did I leave out that they'll be with the Spanish Olympic sailing team- teaching them English while they learn the physics of sailing and groping hands.

It's crazy to me that Brown costs little more than UCSB (if you're coming in from out of state).

We had a handful of people go to Stanford from my public HS. One was a swimmer who set an NCAA record his freshman year.. who was a B- student at best in HS. The other was C+ dud type of kid...Al... who was also a Jr Olympic sailor. Never even knew about that until he got in there and we were all WTF!

I know niche sports like that, fencing, squash, help those Richie rich kids that can afford to do them in the first place get into these kinds spots. USVI, I'd imagine you're taught to sail before youre taught to drive... So in the DNA and all- seems different than some kid in CA or Ohio or whatever

Plus UCSB is insanely hard to get into now. My HS classmates who all went there by the dozens just had to make finger puppets pantomime shotgunning beers to get in. Crazy days.

We coincidentally got a notice from this place where my daughter takes a tennis class about a summer trip to Mallorca to Rafael Nadals academy. Would cost more than both my kids annual tuitions (our FA cost, not actual) plus this Mallorca trip for my son combined.

Mine got into UCSB and UCSD. Both are tough gets. Both will leave her 6 figures in debt when she graduates. OR she can stay in state and be debt-free. Guess what the least popular option is?

I was kind of underwhelmed by the UCSB campus. At least relative to my expectations. UCSD is the one I think she's going to have a hard time walking away from. We'll be checking out the campus soon.

Congrats! Lots of in state folk getting turned away from those (my friends kids). I vote SD as well. Goleta is a dump... Just listen to Camper van Beethoven.

My son just looked at USC last week. Hes only looking at schools with big endowments and scholarships. Saw UMiami too, which was surprisingly good for him.

The instate folks are getting turned away so they can get full tuitions from out of state kids. My oldest is friends with a gal from Cal who is otherworldly in intelligent, bilingual, all the extras, charity, outreach, killed the tests. Turned down from all the schools in Cali. Got a full ride to Oregon and is crushing it.

My coworkers two kids are nice kids but unremarkable by comparison. They are at Chapman and SDSU. Chapman kid got like a 25 on the ACT, other kid didn't bother taking it. But he's rich and they pay full boat so.....TADA!

Fwiw, sadly no athletic scholarships at ivies. But hopefully sailing will help her get in, and hopefully Brown can pony up the rest to help her stay.

Yeah...unless they've changed something in the last year or 2. And maybe with the change in NCAA sports financing they have? Is she a Jr? Could be a recruiting type trip if the program doesn't have the money for those.

Yeah, it's a major deal. The Ivies were often competitive in the major sports up until the early 50s, even producing Heisman winners and such. Then they adopted the no-athletic-scholarships policy in 1953-ish, and ceased to compete on the levels that they had before. However, they still let plenty of athletes in that wouldn't be there based on grades, SAT/ACT scores and extracurriculars alone. And a lot of these are in "rich people sports" like crew and fencing.

I was recruited and played soccer at Columbia. Most of the guys on the team wouldn't have gotten in without soccer. Different time and all, but their SATs and grades even for then were... weak. But the people I mentioned going to Stanford were way lower.

But lol.. yeah- we were perennial national fencing champions. And soccer was top 20 d1, 2 years off playing for the national championship. Harvard went to the final 4 my freshman year. So there were some odd successes, but yeah- actual national champions restricted to those niche rich people sports

my niece and nephew(twins) are both on the sailing team at their private school in the USVI $$$$. my sister is in RI atm for an interview for my niece to go to Brown. she's my niece and its other worldly.
It's crazy to me that Brown costs little more than UCSB (if you're coming in from out of state).
my sister is hoping for a scholarship. the damn private HS is nearly as much as college. especially with 2 of them at the same time
Fwiw, sadly no athletic scholarships at ivies. But hopefully sailing will help her get in, and hopefully Brown can pony up the rest to help her stay.
Call it what they will, the sailing is why they’re there. I didn’t know that about no athletic scholarships.
Yeah...unless they've changed something in the last year or 2. And maybe with the change in NCAA sports financing they have? Is she a Jr? Could be a recruiting type trip if the program doesn't have the money for those.
Yep. She’s a jr

UCSB campus is a dump compared to many schools. until you look west at the ocean.
Can't argue with the view. But even the Long Beach campus was nicer. And, apologies to Snoop, but Long Beach ain't exactly paradise.

I'm familiar. I suspect they wouldn't like ASU more.

I agree. On just the campus. But everything else is nicer in SB. Although if you have the scratch to live in Belmont shore, you’re good.

We did enjoy Rosie's Dog Beach. And some join on 2nd St.

I'm never going to the post office again, gods willing
Had to go the other day to get stamps (needed to mail in the renewal for my dogs license. They actually charge you $3 extra now to do it by mail rather than in person). Of course the self serve stamp machine was down so I had to stand in line to buy stamps like it was the 1920s
That said it probably beats wandering around city hall trying to find the city clerks office
