Made Roverkid's last tuition payment today. No grad school for her so I'm done!!!
Sounds like NYU has been great for her...love how well it seems like shes been doing.

Is she going to stay in NYC?
She loves NYC and would love to stay there. The only issue is that she's focused on editing and really wants to do film and not TV, so there are more opportunities in Hollywood. She's always wanted to make horror films, so if she can't find something in NY she's going to apply for a paid internship with Blumhouse, but she'd need to move to LA. There's an ACE internship that opens in May that would let her stay in NY, but they only have 3 positions a year. Right now she's living right by Tompkins Square Park with no roommates for the first time. She loves it. Her rent is more than my mortgage, though.

She also may be making a documentary about a non-profit in Seattle that launches local bands. That may bring here back here for a few months. One of her professors offered to sign on as executive producer and help get her funding if she wants to direct it.

I'm going to go hang out with her for a few days in January if you want to not meet up for a drink.

amazing! sounds like she's absolutely killing it and I love that she's coming out of college with a pretty clear direction of what she wants to do. I've probably shaked my fist wearily at her in the hood for transgressing some old-person unwritten rule of mine.

ok... I'm bringing this up, not because I'd ever recommend it, but as a measure of last resort if desired.

my wife's good friend's ex-boyfriend (if this was my kid, I'd stop reading about there) made/makes b-movie horror films- not sure how active he still is, but he's gotten them done- often with decent actors that seem like they have no business being around it. he's also a NJ boy, so has filmed and worked locally to NYC. no idea if that's still the case.

I also have no idea if our friend even still talks to the guy. but... I'd be more than happy to try to get that ball rolling if you/girl-genius wanted.

this is the guy.
talked to the kid. contacts in the industry are always a good thing. if you can work out a conversation for her, that would be great.
I'll reach out to my wife's friend...will let you know

I’ll hit you guys up for contacts in about 5 years, assuming my kid doesn’t change his mind on a major, but so far he seems all in on acting

Sports coat or no sports coat?

Have my company's holiday party this Friday. At a nice hotel/club type place on the bay in Newport Beach, CA. I will be called up to the speaker's podium to accept my five-year work anniversary plaque and I have a little 2-minute speech prepared to thank everyone and give some shout-outs.

From years past, I think it's about 50/50 with folks wearing sports coats vs. just a nice button-up w/ slacks. I'm wearing fairly casual shoes, as we have to walk to an "after-party", so I don't want clunky dress shoes. Wearing an "UnTuckit" shirt (Google them) and nice corduroy slacks. I do have a dark blue sports coat that I am entertaining, but think it'll be a hassle once we're on to the after-party :oldunsure:

Should I go with the coat or nah?

This seems like a question for @El Floppo ; although there's not a scarf involved.

For a holiday party, coat with a nice sweater would be my call.

there's no reason there can't be a scarf involved.

I was pro-coat until the after-party came into play. Unless there's a distinct line drawn between the wearers and the non-wearers, I'd skip it (i.e., Are the people who are worth a damn the ones wearing and career-dead slack###es not wearing them? Is your boss wearing one?)

A little acceptance speech for a 5 year anniversary?

Congrats on 5 yrs.

I know different industries and companies can have different "traditions", just not sure. I have been at the same credit union for just over 25 years and don't think this goes on. There would just be a little get together if I retired or left. We are also now too big to have a company wide Christmas party.

Are you giving a shout out to smoo or @shuke ?

Agreed and then lose it at the after party.

BTW 2 minutes seems about a minute and 50 seconds too long unless that's standard for the company. Of course, I'm also in the camp these days of nothing good happens at the afterparty. Find who you want to remember that you were there on the walk/ride over, order a drink with them, and then skeddadle before the drink is done with a good ol' Irish exit.

Yeah our company gives out plaques or whatever every 5 years. First company I've been at that does this. For the "bigger" ones like 15-20, etc., the fanfare is a little more pronounced and the speeches a bit longer, so for my 5-year I'll just say a few words of thanks and such.

I will probably say "sup" to @shuke

Yeah, as I mentioned above, the 10-15-20 etc. folks usually go 4-5 minutes if not longer. So for my 5, I'll just be short and sweet. It may be closer to 1 minute, actually.

Are they doing standup? I mean we have the "Most Interesting XXXer" every week in our company's all hands and those last 2-3 minutes. That better be a deep open bar.
