GM's thread about nothing (22 Viewers)

Merry belated Christmas (or what-have-you) to my fellow GMTANers. Hope you've all had a relatively stress-free and enjoyable time this last week. A few things:

1) Most importantly, I need to provide an update on my secret santa gift from Guster. I mentioned in my list of items that there was a knitted something-or-other in a plastic bag that I was afraid to open. Turns out, this was smart. Mr. YSR got home from TX on Saturday and on Sunday morning, he was going through all of the items that were still out on the table. He is the one who opened the bag and laid out what was, yes, an actual dickmitten. :lmao: Shortly thereafter, I got a PM from Guster confirming that you can, in fact, purchase these from etsy.

b) There may never be a better customer service than Zappos. Amazon is pretty up there, too.

#) There may never be a worse customer service than Comcast.

fore) I mentioned to Romo that I had sent in $$$ for a cosurukhole deposit. He would like to formally request that beach volleyball be added to the GM Olympics.
Same company... To be fair, they are run somewhat differently but getting closer all the time. Amazon hasn't screwed this one up like they screwed up Woot.

Happy holidays and a happy new year, Jim Tanners.

Just popping in to remind everyone the 2013 pool is up and running at :e:, get your entries in before midnight on the 31st.

That is all, carry on.

Anyone in here know anything about televisions? From what I've gathered, LED > Plasma, but costs a bit more. I believe the greater the refresh rate, the better the quality also?Anything else I should be looking for when comparing prices? Any one know of any companies running some good deals?I've started looking into this (55', LED, at least 240hz), and am seeing anywhere from $1,200 - $3,500. Also, a lot of televisions still offering 3d? I'm not really interested in 3d but I mean, if it comes with it, it comes with it
the whole 240Hz thing is nothing more than a sales gimmick. also, LCDs are not always better than plasmas.

I've gone straight Otis since Thanksgiving. Finally hit the scale this morning and I'm +8 lbs. for the month. Time to start running again.

:goodposting: Plasmas are 600Hz, but it doesn't matter in plasmas like in LCDs, and the 240Hz in LCDs looks fake to some people. LCDs (LED is the light source) tend to be brighter and handle glare from sunlight better. Plasmas typically have better color and black levels (which are important for shadow detail in movies/shows that have a lot of dark scenes).

yep. I agree with all this. Most any new LED/LCD at 120 or better is going to blow away anything you've owned in a while. You should be able to find a decent 55-60" for 1K or less.No 3D is fine. I have it and NEVER use it. I do recommend SmarTV, as Netflix and Prime can salvage a crappy broadcast night. You can get it in your DVD player, but I do like it integrated into my tv set. Find a couple in your price range, then research them and read the one stars reviews (Amazon is good) to find out what the flaws are and whether you can ve with them. Most of the lower priced models have crappy sound (and many of the higher dollar ones, as well), but that is easy to cure with a $150 sound bar.Sears and Sams club often have a few on clearance and I have never had a problem buying a display model.

thanks allI have a home theater system, so I'm not worried about sound quality - just picture quality.I originally was going to go with a plasma, as they are a bit cheaper, but I read that LED/LCD's are better

we have a Plasma and LCD and I like the LCD picture a lot more.

I agree with what others have said. LCD is probably better for watching sports due to the brightness. Plasma probably better for watching movies.

oooh, that will probably be the deciding factor, as this television will be in our family room, primarily watching movies.

Hockey is much better on a plasma  Plasmas handle motion significantly better than any LCD even at 240Hz.

I've read that but haven't experienced it myself. :shrug:I love my LCD. Not a big Plasma fan.

The one thing that is always constant is Plasma picture quality is always better than the equivalent LCD. The one thing is a lot of people think brighter=better, and unless you get a high end LCD with local dimming, black levels on a plasma are significantly better.

I think you like brighter pictures better and that will be your deciding factor. If you have them side by side and properly setup the plasma will have better motion, color and look more natural. The LCD will be brighter. A lot of people will like the brighter picture though.

Are you sure about that? It'll be pretty humiliating for him to get dominated by a bunch of drunks.

Some people like shrimp better than scallops. Both are good, altho most people prefer one over the other. Go to a showroom and see if you're a scallop guy.

It's a Uruk-Chili Weekend, where I make 5 gallons of the stuff and then guilt-force people to take some because I have so much. It's not authentic or anything - it has (gasp!) beans in it - but I love it. Props to my first wife for the recipe.

Start radiation again next week, which will lead me up to cos-hole. Following that, I'm doing some holistic stuff. I'm still not quite 100% sure of what it is (my fault, not Dr Lucy Liu's - haven't done the reading yet). Got a stupid-assed corporate meeting in Atlanta smack-dab in the middle of January, which means getting nuked for one weekend instead of during the week. Radiation treatment itself doesn't mess with me too much, but killing a weekend doing it to keep up does. THANKS, CORPORATE!

Julio asked me to send him an Orioles cap. So, I bought 3 different hats. My idiot-self must've not written the Nicaraguan address correctly because Amazon shipped them here (my default shipping address). Luckily, krista is going down there in a couple of weeks and will take them for me. When I explained all of this to Julio, his exact response was "OK MAN DON,T WORRY PERFECT!!!".

Cos: tell me the long-range forecast for Austin is "warmer than usual" for the next 35 days. It's a whole lot easier to go "just-carry-on" with shorts than it is with winter clothes.

YSR: if I didn't send a congrats for carrying little Romo/Romette, here it be. Also glad to see y'all are coming to Austin.

Frosty: I think Matthews is lying. Every damned razor/shaving-cream commercial I've ever seen has you going against the grain. How in the hell are the 14 blades supposed to "lift and cut" if you're with the grain?

That's awesome. Don't worry--if things had gone to Nicaragua it would take months (really) to get there and then Julio would have to go to Managua to sign for the package. It's better this way.Good luck with the radiation next week. I don't feel like "good luck" is the appropriate nomenclature, but I'm not sure what else might be.

We leave Lisbon tomorrow to get back home. There is a 65.6% chance I will not make it home due to the Saharan death flu I'm still battling. This sucks. On the bright side, we had lunch here today. Tony Bourdain recommended, krista4 approved...best seafood I've had anywhere in my life.

Heal up soon, k4."Good luck" is as good as anything, but "Kick ###" works too. It's odd - I had a doctor tell me I was dead in a year (and I'm creeping up on his deadline), but I feel good. According to the last pic taken, there's still something bad there (maybe smaller) so why don't I feel like ####? I'm no superhero, not to mention Chuck Norris or Gusher. I've seen the X Rays; it ain't fake. I wake up every morning waiting to feel more like crap than I do, but it doesn't seem to happen. Am I getting worse and am just sliding slowly down the slope at a speed I can't notice? Or was I already at the bottom of the slope and didn't realize it?

 Mrs. SLB played volleyball in college, this would make her happy. Of course her back is roached, to say the least, so maybe not.Worlds were colliding last night when out of the blue Mrs. SLB asked me "so is Forrest's wife going to Austin?". I'm glad to hear you three are in for sure.I've also been sick with a chest infection for 10 days now. This sucks balls. Particularly since I've been "off" of work. This has been the worst ####### Christmas of my life. Almost all the decorations are down already. Just want it over and that isn't like me.ETAGood luck with the chemo Uruk.

I am probably the best volleyball player in town over 275, under 5'10" and 57 years old.
Come on... You don't look a day over 56.P loved the Christmas card. Carried it around all day when I checked the mail. Yesterday.

As long as both of my feet are off the ground at the same time, it counts as a jump serve, right?Tell Romo I'll be his man-panion.

oof, remember my love/hate relationship with Morocco I posted about? *ding* *ding*... Thopras, s.Side note: Ramiro, eh? They have a wheel barrow service... supposedly...

How far behind are the payments?

How long ago did she pass?

Is the estate resolved?

Has the foreclosure happened or about to happen?

How much money is left from the estate?

How much is left on the loan?

Thanks, GB. Not chemo, though, just radiation and some witch doctor stuff. I'm not doing any more chemo - #### that ####. This is a choice I'm pretty clear-eyed about - I would rather load up on opiates both legal and illegal, and drift away than do that again. I'm not saying no one else should, just that it didn't seem to help (according to Lucy, the radiation did more - ?) and it made me sick as ####. As I said above, I feel pretty good nowadays so maybe it's easy for me to say these things now and act like John Wayne. The best thing about all of this is that it forced me to get my affairs in order, which everyone should do whether you're sick or not. The last Will I had written was 20 years ago and doesn't apply anymore (2 divorces and a few properties ago). I overspent for a lawyer on this one when I could've done it myself, but I had a reason: besides my brother & mother, I have no heirs. If I somehow outlive them, I have no one to leave my "estate" to; I have cousins, but all are better-off than I and don't need money. So, the lawyer is 3rd in line behind mom/bro with the instructions to liquidate and give all profits to the local food bank. I also got on paper to be creamated, not to be kept alive by artificial means, and to have anyone who wants one to take an organ for whatever reason (God help who ends up with my lungs and liver).I'm just guessing here, but it seems most who post regularly in this thread have kids/SO/homes/family (hell, even if you don't). Not to get all preachy, but do your loved ones a favor and write a Will. It'll take less than a half-hour of your time and can cost under $100. I've seen first-hand what "no Will" can #### up and it ain't pretty.

Best of luck, UH. I can't even imagine what you are going through so am not going to pretend to.
Thanks, shuke. Sounds stupid, but you get used to it. The worst for me was recently. I had resigned myself to not doing anything else artificial to combat this ####, then got talked into doing treatment again. That dragged all of the fear back to the surface again. I'm good with it now, though.Didja ever finish the Game Of Thrones books?
