There's a funny joke about an American businessman playing golf in Japan........GAMAGUCHI!!!
One of my faves. I'll post it at :e: later.
Hoop Dreams is overrated. It's a good doc, but to be a great one it should either stumble upon something surprising or say something greater about the country or the world. It's just about 2 kids, and it could be pretty much any 2 kids trying to make it in basketball. If you want a better doc about trying to make it from the inner city, watch Waiting for Superman. While checking Wikipedia I see Curtis Gates (the chubby older brother of William) was murdered the day before 9/11.
This is some good shtick.

If Homer wants to slide behind the bar and show us his chops, I have about 20 fancy liqueurs for him to exercise his prowess with.

I agree with this guy. Not everything has a happy ending. Terrific story, IMO.Most powerful documentary I've ever watchedNot a happy ending here, either.ESPN's 30 for 30 have been pretty good too. Just watched the Len Bias one with my wife. She was too young to remember any of this stuff, so she was enthralled. The Bo Jackson one was good too, but my favorite by a mile was the Todd Marinovich story. That one DID have a happy ending, against all odds. I thought for sure he'd be in prison or close to dead.

I really liked the Marinovich one as well. I also dig his paintings. http://toddmarinovich.com/

Hoop Dreams revolutionized the doc gameWouldn't be a Waiting for Superman without Hoop Dreams
SureI guess I'm in the minority here, but after watching Hoop Dreams I don't have the thought "wow, that was incredible". Or "my God, we need to change what we are doing as a society". It's considered one of the greatest movies of all time by critics. Maybe THE greatest doc. Overrated.

I found myself really liking him against all the preconceived notions I had of him going into the documentary. I wanted to hate his father too, but I didn't. Really cool ending, IMO. Seems like Todd's in a good place now; happy. Easy to root for.

Why wait for :e:?An American business man was visiting Japan on business. His first night in town, he decides to visit a prostitute. In the throes of passion as he reaches his peak, the prostitutes begins screaming "Nichgianyi! Nichgianyi!" He is amazed at his performance and has a great night's sleep. The next day, he is at the golf course with his Japanese business colleagues. Unbelievably, one f them actually make a hole in one. To show his entusiasm and knowledge of the culture, he begins to shout, "Nichgianyi! Nichgianyi!." The golfer gives him a cold stare and says. "What you mean, wrong hole?

I think the fact that it is so "normal" is what makes it great and sad at the same time. Millions of kids put all their effort into sports as a way out and not everyone makes it to the pro level.

Yeah. It was always "common knowledge" that his dad was a totally jerk etc etc.

You are also watching this film nearly 20 years after it was made, so you've had two decades to watch comparable documentaries, many of which profile inner-city American life or perhaps have more profound and successful conclusions. This movie was groundbreaking stuff back in 1994. White affluent Americans were introduced to a segment of the population that had little to no exposure, save for crime reports or the occasional drive-by with the windows up and the doors locked. This film thrust us into the lives of poor kids whose families made incredible sacrifices so their children could have a shot at a better life and maximize their athletic abilities. This wasn't a Hollywood depiction of race issues, economic division or cultural divide; it was the real thing. Roger Ebert called it the film of the 90s...high praise.

You're ####ing with me, right?
I'm not a huge WFS fan, just referencing the doc that 17 seconds mentioned within the context of documentary developmentI think the genre has made amazing strides in the past 20 years...Don't know how old 17 seconds is, but "documentary" when I was growing up in the 80s and early 90s was usually code for boring and pedantic

Serious question here.Did we ever finalize how the masses who aren't attending Coshole will be receiving their coshole updates?Streaming Camera? Computer at the front desk permanently logged to GMTAN thread? Twitter? Ultra elite text message threads?

Also need arrival times if possible. I don't think I'll make it to the Super Bowl party but Friday lunch or something is likely doable.

I heard something about wearing pink bandanas around your neck so the pickup at the airport is easy.

Some folks are coming in around noon Friday. I forget who. Thorn? YSR? Gusher? STLB?We could probably do a 1-2pm lunch. Maybe Amaya's?

I have a two hour layover in Houston, then an hour long flight into Austin. Couldn't I just hitchhike from the Houston airport and get to Austin faster? Anyhow, I get in at 8:35pm on Friday. No checked luggage. Am happy to cab it to the bars if there's a group out there, or just go with the flow. I'm usually just happy regardless.

Actually we had a little scare with son's GF the other night. We were all at dinner and the wife noticed GF was wearing a small Star of David necklace. Turns out she wears it in honor of her late grandmother who was Jewish (GF is not). Whew.
would she be the first jew in bakersfield?

Tommy Coy?
Sorry, tired. :lmao: Who is he on here? Seems to be a FBG based on our mutual friends, but I'm forgetting who it is. Am wondering because of message and friend request I received from a friend of this person.
He doesn't post here anymore, but I see him lurking. Nice guy. Facock or somesuch?
facook, I believe
Ooops, facock.

All garbage aside, you guys/gals - I'm really looking forward to this and thanks to cosjobs for PUTTING HIS ENTIRE LIVELYHOOD ON THE THE LINE. I'm pretty sure it'll be ok, cos.

coshole updates

If the weather patterns hold, we will be looking at highs in the low 60s during the day and low 50s in the evening. I will update as we get closer

As mentioned earlier, anyone looking for a really good time outside the oaks on Sat night should consider Carnaval. Tix are 40-65 and it will sell out. It is the place to be that evening. Let me know if you want me to acquire some for you.

I was thinking bbq Friday but it might be fun to tend the pit Sat/Sun and have bbq for the SB instead and fix a big pot of shrimp gumbo fro Friday night. The advantage of that is that it would stay hot and keep well for people arriving over an eight hour window. THoughts?
Belated two cents, but gumbo sounds like it would be perfect for Friday. What's Carnaval? I may be interested if there are at least seven more words in its official title.

We will be rolling in sometime Friday evening. I have to pry Romo away from the poker tables in Tunica first thing Friday morning (I've already told him that we will be on the road by 7:00 a.m. and to behave accordingly Thursday night), then we are planning a small-ish detour at one of my best friend's new restaurants in Ft. Worth. My hope is that we will be there by 8 or 9 Friday night but that may be unrealistic/overly optimistic. I will plan to stay in touch with cosholers via phone or text over the course of Friday.
