GM's thread about nothing (40 Viewers)

kevzilla, did you take the job? Is this in here somewhere and I missed it?
I called HCA and took that job. Might take them two weeks to get their #### together. Meanwhile, called the other place and they assured me I am their first choice, they're jumping through hoops of red tape. When they offer me, then I'll have to actually make a decision. Either way, I'll have a job before my brokerage account melts away to nothing.
Congrats Kev! I'll have a beer in your honor tonightMoleculo>Seriously hope all goes well with your mom. What kind of keg?
Beer for Kev

I haven't bought a pair of boxers for myself in years. I've bought some compression shorts for running, but boxers? Either my wife, ex-wife or gf past and present* are responsible for 100% of my non-workout related underwear. *just joking!
Understand, I will find a girlfriend ASAP.
I make it 8-5 rickyjgo finds a girlfriend to buy him underwear before I do.
My wife would be pissed.
I will be pissed if Kev buys you underwear

Ah, thanks for the explanations. I hadn't followed Yandek's career closely enough (i.e. at all). :)

Wifey got me kagerator for fathers day, which is pretty awesome. I was gonna pick up a keg on my way home from work today, when @ about 4:00 i got a phone call that they found my mom floating in the pool face down. She's ok now, i'm in the hospital sitting with her. Not sure what happened... she's a diabetic and seems to be having low blood count, whatever that means. Could have been a mini-stroke, could be any number of other things...probably related to cold water and low blood pressure.Should be good to pick up keg tomorrow.
Oh yeah...thank God for lifeguards.

Ty all for all of the thorpa and good vibes.so here's the non-smart phone version:my mom and dad took my kids to the pool yesterday afternoon. My dad was letting the big one (4) jump in off of the edge of the pool, my mom was playing with the little one (2). all of a sudden, some other woman yelled, and my dad turned around to see my mom face down, unconscious. Lifeguards jumped in, pulled her out and cleared her airway. She was completely unconscious for a while, lifeguard had a hard time finding a pulse and her lips were turning blue. She and started to come to when the paramedics were loading her onto the ambulance...except, when she came to, it's like the only part of her brain that was working was fight-or-flight, and she was in full fight mode. I guess her fight was pretty impressive for a 62 yr old woman.. She finally calmed down and came to mid-way to the hospital. She has no memory of going to the pool up until she got to the hospital.still don't know what happened. CT scan came back clean, chest X-rays were ok, not sure what happened. Could be some effect of some chemo she is on interacting with cold water, could be really low blood pressure, could be low blood sugar...Dr's kept her in the ER until about 12:30 last night and finally got her admitted. Hopefully they can come up with some sort of diagnosis today.

Man, growing up Catholic sounds like teh suck. I thought I had it bad as a Presbyterian, but am realizing this was Diet Religion compared to the Cathies. Went to a Catholic wedding last summer in Detroit. It was a BIG wedding - wife's family. When it was time for communion, the ENTIRE f'n church lined up for bread and wine. I mean everybody was getting up in line. Even the 91 year old grandfather with an oxygen tank. Took about 10 minutes to feed everybody. Only two guys remained seated. Me and Uncle Eddy. And yes, Uncle Eddy is every bit as awesome as he sounds. Was a little worried my wife's parents would say something to my wife about me staying seated, but nothing was said. My mom wanted me and the boys to go to church last Sunday for Pentacostal Sunday (wear red, she said!) and then to a post-church picnic. I passed. She was not pleased. I'm good for church once or maybe twice a year to make her happy, but I'm done with church picnics for life.
I would think you did the right thing there, GM. For those that believe in it, taking the bread and wine is a sacred thing. Most churches I know even mention something about folks should remain seated if it's not something you're into. I wouldn't think staying seated like that a wedding would be any big deal at all. In fact, that's the respectful thing to do.J

I look forward to reading about Joe's stories of drunken debauchery, sharting, degenerate gambling, etc.

Holy ####! Dom King just walked in. :lmao:
No, seriously. We're having dinner and all of these people start walking in at one time and then there's Don King with an American flag draped over both of his shoulders. I thought it was particularly funny since I posted about his "probably" last Jackson family music tour just hours earlier. :lmao:
SLB> thanks for the t-shirt. It's a bit lacking in the cat department though.
Did you get the other package?

It's going to be my birthday every couple of months.

I never got the Yandek hate.
He's a spammer. I may be wrong, but I don't think he's ever expressed an opinion or engaged w/ anyone outside of his celeb interviews, linking to his web page. It was cute when he was in HS, but he's a grown ### man now and IMO the schtick has run it's course.

Dude....sorry to hear that. My lord, what a scary thing to endure. I was not expecting this. Hope she makes a full recovery and can enjoy a brew out of your keg.

AC went out on a 103 degree day.

It is completely dead. Breakers and fuses look fine. A filter got sucked into the intake vent, but removing it doesn't get it started again.

Very :hot:
As far as the AC goes, good luck. Could be a bad breaker - try throwing it on/off a few times and see if that helps. If not, it's likely something with the compressor motor, which would suck. Hope it's just a bad breaker.
Lots was wrong because of the failed filter (automatic reset on thermal safety switch did not automatically reset, clogged coil and drain), but in the end, throwing the 60 amp breaker up and down many times in anger and frustration got the thing running again somehow. I only did that because I couldn't believe the tech wanted $250 just to come and look at it on a weekend. Funny how just flipping the breaker twice last night didn't help.

Thanks GM for the restaurant recommendation. I'll check it out.

So we've got our first real stretch of nice weather in 2011 and I've got strep. FML
Hope you feel better, Facook. Yesterday was gorgeous. Today, chilly and rain. Sweet summer, eh? Course, at least it isn't 103 and no A/C. One idea for you is to pick up either a Portland Mercury or Willamette Week - both are free and can be found at the entry/exit of most stores/restaurants. New Seasons, for example. These are not only great reads but will list out ALL the happy hours, events, etc going on in Portland. I've linked their updated event calendar.

Portland has a LOT of happy hours going on during the weekends where you can get really great food for bargain prices, so long as you don't mind buying an adult beverage or two. The Northwest area in particular is great to walk around and check out all the options.

Pope House Bourbon Lounge is one we really like a lot. Happy hour 4-7 and ALL day on Sunday. There's probably over 10 great joints in the NW Portland area that will have sweet happy hours. Plus, that is a GREAT area to walk around and check out people, houses, gardens, etc. Just a gorgeous area.

If you head to NW Portland and aren't feeling too great, maybe a movie at The Mission? $3 entry to all movies with beer, wine, booze, food. Cheap date for sure. Wife and I much prefer this joint for movies than the regular theaters, especially if you are a little bit behind everybody else in terms of movie going. We saw Kings Speech there last month or so.

Word of caution - the Portland Gay Pride Parade is today, so downtown/waterfront will be pretty, uh, gay today. NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT! Just, you know...throwing it out there. If you were Urbanhack, I'd probably invite you to go. ;)

Lemme know if you have any questions. I'll be around most of the weekend with my boys. Hope this rain lets up.

all kinds of good stuff in here. I'm pretty well set with pens for life now. Got some file folders, some post-its, some hooters paraphenalia, a single ping pong ball, and what looks like a very good DVD. There's some Victoria's Secret lip blush as well. Also note the MS is BS t-shirt.

Thanks dude. :banned:

I know the new My Morning Jacket album hasn't been very well received by those whose music opinions are more refined than mine, but my lord, do I ever love the song "Outta My System". How can you not like a song that starts off with "They told me not to smoke drugs, but I wouldn't listen". YES!!!

Rest of the album is kind of wussish, though.

I need a really good eggplant parmesan recipe.
This is from Cook's Illustrated so I'm sure it's awesome.
EGGPLANT PARMESANPublished January 1, 2004. WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:We wanted our eggplant Parmesan recipe to be a fresher, lighter take on the classic Italian version—meaty slices of eggplant with a crisp and substantial (but not heavy) coating, napped with a simple tomato sauce, and well-flavored with Parmesan cheese. For our eggplant Parmesan recipe, we wound up skipping the frying altogether, instead baking the slices that had been coated in flour, eggs, and bread crumbs seasoned with Parmesan cheese. We then layered the eggplant with a simple tomato sauce, leaving the top layer of eggplant exposed so it stayed crisp.SERVES 6 TO 8Use kosher salt when salting the eggplant. The coarse grains don't dissolve as readily as the fine grains of regular table salt, so any excess can be easily wiped away. To be time-efficient, use the 30 to 45 minutes during which the salted eggplant sits to prepare the breading, cheeses, and sauce.INGREDIENTSEggplant2pounds globe eggplant (2 medium eggplants), cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick rounds1tablespoon kosher salt8slices high-quality white bread (about 8 ounces), torn into quarters1cup grated Parmesan cheese (about 2 ounces)1cup unbleached all-purpose flour4 large eggs6tablespoons vegetable oilTomato Sauce3 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) diced tomatoes2tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil4medium cloves garlic , minced or pressed through garlic press (about 1 generous tablespoon)1/4teaspoon red pepper flakes1/2cup fresh basil leaves chopped8ounces whole milk mozzarella or part-skim mozzarella, shredded (2 cups)1/2cup grated Parmesan cheese (about 1 ounce)10 fresh basil leaves torn, for garnishINSTRUCTIONS1. FOR THE EGGPLANT: Toss half of eggplant slices and 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt in large bowl until combined; transfer salted eggplant to large colander set over bowl. Repeat with remaining eggplant and kosher salt, placing second batch in colander on top of first. Let stand until eggplant releases about 2 tablespoons liquid, 30 to 45 minutes. Arrange eggplant slices on triple layer paper towels; cover with another triple layer paper towels. Firmly press each slice to remove as much liquid as possible, then wipe off excess salt.2. While eggplant is draining, adjust oven racks to upper- and lower-middle positions, place rimmed baking sheet on each rack, and heat oven to 425 degrees. Pulse bread in food processor to fine, even crumbs, about fifteen 1-second pulses (you should have about 4 cups). Transfer crumbs to pie plate and stir in 1 cup Parmesan, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; set aside. Wipe out bowl (do not wash) and set aside.3. Combine flour and 1 teaspoon pepper in large zipper-lock bag; shake to combine. Beat eggs in second pie plate. Place 8 to 10 eggplant slices in bag with flour; seal bag and shake to coat eggplant. Remove eggplant slices, shaking off excess flour, dip in eggs, let excess egg run off, then coat evenly with bread crumb mixture; set breaded slices on wire rack set over baking sheet. Repeat with remaining eggplant.4. Remove preheated baking sheets from oven; add 3 tablespoons oil to each sheet, tilting to coat evenly with oil. Place half of breaded eggplant on each sheet in single layer; bake until eggplant is well browned and crisp, about 30 minutes, switching and rotating baking sheets after 10 minutes, and flipping eggplant slices with wide spatula after 20 minutes. Do not turn off oven.5. FOR THE SAUCE: While eggplant bakes, process 2 cans diced tomatoes in food processor until almost smooth, about 5 seconds. Heat olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes in large heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and garlic is light golden, about 3 minutes; stir in processed and remaining can of diced tomatoes. Bring sauce to boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and reduced, about 15 minutes (you should have about 4 cups). Stir in basil and season to taste with salt and pepper.6. TO ASSEMBLE: Spread 1 cup tomato sauce in bottom of 13 by 9-inch baking dish. Layer in half of eggplant slices, overlapping slices to fit; distribute 1 cup sauce over eggplant; sprinkle with half of mozzarella. Layer in remaining eggplant and dot with 1 cup sauce, leaving majority of eggplant exposed so it will remain crisp; sprinkle with 1/2 cup Parmesan and remaining mozzarella. Bake until bubbling and cheese is browned, 13 to 15 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; scatter basil over top, and serve, passing remaining tomato sauce separately.

Cat Shirt> hi. I know you were not very good at teh Facebook when you first signed up, but are you aware you entered your birthday incorrectly?
Never give your correct birthdate. Astrology-based Russian internet mobsters can use that stuff to unravel your life.

I bet if Eggplant had a different name, I'd try it again. But I can't get past the name, the look or my horrid childhood memories of being forced to eat it.

:thumbup:Looks really good and certainly doable.

I'm not very good at the internet, so I don't know how to look this #### up, but it's official that Houston is now a desert. This is like the 20th day in the past month it's reached at least 100, and I'm not sure how much actual precipitation there has been the past 90 days, but I'd say it's maybe a millimeter or two.

Needless to say it's very hot. again. :(

Quite possibly might get to 60 degrees today in Portland, OR. And hey, look at that, it's RAIN!

Summer fever...catch it.

Pretty sure I've done it before, but my boss made a fortune playing for the Portland Beavers in the early 80s by selling T-shirts that read "Beaver Fever: Snatch It!". Team owner was Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley and gave birth and his blessing to the slogan.

Would love one of those shirts now.

Oh, and I'm about to go Office Space on my Epson Sylus All-in-One hunk of poo printer. Should I video tape the madness? This thing is the worst device invented by man and that includes the Corvair, Slanket and Segway.

I have a large patch of onions that have bolted so I'm deep frying the flowers in beer batter.

YSR, I don't make EP Parm quite like that recipe, but I probably can't improve on it beyond thinking that sauce needs some meat flavor. That's why I asked about it being veggie. I would put a couple fat sweet Italian sausages in that sauce as it boils down to infuse some pork fat goodness into it. It works better with the cheese and eggplant, imo.

The Mojave will hit 107-110 late next week, so this oddly nice run of weather is over. It was only 103 yesterday because my ac broke down. It will only reach 95 today. And as nice and dry as it is, 95 with lots of shade and a pool works fine for me.

Thanks GM for the restaurant recommendation. I'll check it out.
