GM's thread about nothing (31 Viewers)

Weird that you would quote this today. I had a dream last night that we were out on a date with those gals. It was probably because I was getting very frisky with Mrs. SLB when Cal opened the door to our bedroom. I got him back to sleep right away, things resumed and then Dylan starts crying. Mrs. SLB got dressed and went into his room to comfort him. I was told he was having "growing pains" and now she was no longer in the mood. Stoopid kids.
I may regret this, but... details?
Nothing weird. Well other than I was out on a double date with some guy from the innernets with some girl whom I never met. I just remember we were all at a bar drinking beers and laughing a lot.

Just made myself a New York strip medium rare and drizzled in butter and Stilton crumbles that pretty much brought me to orgasm.
Yeah, about that invitation to that BBQ of yours...
:lmao: Drifter - how you liking Seattle so far? I know the weather has been brutal. It's been awful in Portland. Just rainy, wet and cold for what seems like forever. So tired of it. Anyhow, hope you're enjoying the NW.

Is there any worse DIY project than scoring and stripping wallpaper? Brutal.
I once spent the better part of a Father's Day with a rented steamer removing wallpaper that wouldn't come off using just wallpaper stripper. The guy at the rental place said something to the effect of "You should be putting this money toward a divorce lawyer." I should have listened.
:lmao: Wallpaper is teh suck, no doubt about it.When are you going to be on the Columbia?

This is what I thought it would be like so it hasn't bothered me that much. Is this worse than most winters? Really, I work too much to be that bummed about it. I am counting on summer being spectacular though so I may feel different if that doesn't happen. The city's been great and my job is such that I get taken out to dinner pretty regularly when vendors come through town so I've been eating at some really nice places around town. Other than that though, between the work and two little ones, I haven't had much of a chance to check out as much as we'd like.

I'm thinking about changing careers, but I don't know where to begin.
I need a new maid.
I could probably handle that, as long as I can clean with a drink in one hand.
GM may have some contract work available at a warehouse in Portland.
There's 5 guys in my office, one of them just sub-leases space from us. He's kind of like an adopted pet of ours. Anyway, we joke quite a bit that it would take a week maybe less for us to have some sort of harrassment lawsuit against us if we ever hired a woman. Kid you not, today at one point I played the theme song to "Destination Dirtpipe" and had people singing along with it.

Still trying to figure it out. Going to be at Crystal Mountain for the dummy downhill (drinking while watching people crash homemade sleds) on Saturday, then we were supposed to be fishing Sunday-Wednesday. Unfortunately, the department of fish and game and the people who run the Bonneville Dam aren't cooperating. The Columbia is flooded, the Willamette is mud, and they closed springer fishing on the Columbia a week early this year. If we don't figure out another destination, we'll probably be there Sunday night through Wednesday. I'll definitely let you know.

Feels like the last two years have been really bad weather wise. I've been in Portland 15 years now and I think this is the worst spring I've endured. March was the 5th wettest month in history, dating back to when they kept stats of such things. But it'll get better and once summer rolls around, you're going to love it there. Where are you located? Summer in Seattle is really something special. You should hook up with Redmond Longhorn. Good dude and he knows Seattle inside and out.

Cool. I didn't know that about the fishing. But what I know about fishing you could fit in a thimble.

Springer fishing is a strange thing. The numbers go up drastically the first part of April, but each year the Oregon and Washington fish and game people try to predict when it will peak, and then close it a certain number of days before that. Last week there were something like 35 salmon that went up the fish ladder at the counting station. Next week it will be 2000. The week after it will be 20000.

So every year since 2006 it closed around April 15, which means the best fishing would be the week before it closes. I took vacation the 11th through 15th (I have to schedule vacations about 90 days in advance); a month ago they announced that the Columbia closes on April 4. Can fish the Willamette for the same run, but the water's dirty and there's so much runoff that it's basically mud and unfishable. We may end up heading elsewhere, but there aren't many options right now.

Well, a double date with just one girl is kinda weird. At least where I come from...And you better not have been wearing your cat shirt. I actually like this one.

Only thing missing from this alert is the Plague of Frogs

JustWeather.com Alert: a Fire Weather Warning, a Tornado Warning, 4 Lake Wind Advisories, 5 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 5 Tornado Watches in your area.

I've stopped drinking (for the month of April), started working out and have cut down to 1500 calories per day of mostly flora. Last night I'm pretty sure I Shuke-dreamed my way through an entire churrasqueira.

lolJust weird dream GB. The really odd thing is I noticed the next day that my cousin in Madison, WI has a FB friend with the same last name. He also has one with the same last name as GM.

Interesting day for me. I was informed that the school board unanimously voted for me to receive tenure. Also, I was informed that I have been laid off.

I'm sorry to hear you were laid off. I don't totally understand tenure - does the tenure offer mean that you can apply directly for a tenured position?

All tenure means is that my 4 year probationary period is over so if they were to fire me, they would have to have a tenure meeting and provide due cause. If it was a question of performance, they have to present to me the performance issues and allow me an opportunity to improve. A non-tenured teacher can be let go for any reason. I am highly qualified in special education and social studies, so if there are positions that open up (based on funding and enrollment) I would have to be called back for those positions based on my seniority vs. the seniority of the other laid off teachers who would be highly qualified for those positions. I wouldn't have to apply for anything.

Is there anyway we can blame the teachers and/or unions for this?

I have a lot of faith in my union. When the district said it was having financial trouble and enrollment was down, we took a 2 year pay freeze and chipped in more for health care (at 10% now, likely 20% next year). We also allowed the district to raise the maximum number of students per class so the district could amp up recruitment of kids from Detroit. It was successful and we had the highest enrollment in years, average class sizes at 32. However, there is physically no more room in the classes to fit more kids. I don't see how we can function next year with 10% of our staff laid out.

I was in the union before I received tenure. Just since I have tenure, to dismiss me, the administration must hold a hearing in front of the board and receive approval.

Might as well get this over with

Part 3

***(If you don’t care, I understand, just skip to the bottom)

When my GF was a sophomore in high school, 1944, his uncle offered to put him through college as an engineer but he had to embrace the Lutheran faith. (There is a book, Zion on the Mississippi[\i], that documents my GGF coming to the U.S. from Bremen as part of the Lutheran movement which is pretty cool.) My GF refused. I guess it’s pretty hard to be convinced in God when your Dad dies when you are so young. His uncle never talked to him again.

Around the same time somebody left a baby on the doorstep of my GGM's. I guess stuff like that really happened in the “olden days”. They found out much later in life that the baby was the 14th child of some Irish broad. Go figure. So with money tighter than ever and WWII still raging, my GF lied about his age and joined the navy two weeks after his 17th birthday. Fate smiled on him once again as he was made the ship’s baker. He got a lot of preferential treatment (booze) from the Captain and other officers on board.

As he was at sea his mind wasn’t preoccupied with the war or his family so much as he was with my GM. He wrote her romantic poems and love notes almost every single day. My GM was a very attractive woman that “had a lot of male suitors”. I guess these days you would call her slutty. Upon his discharge in 1946, my GF wasn’t going to be deterred by the competition. He never told me exactly how he finished on top but I’m guessing it was similar to how he ended the great coal competition years earlier. I do know that my GM didn’t want to get married or tied down to one man but she (obviously) went ahead with it anyway. I understand these feelings last a good year until she finally embraced the idea.

On the ship my GF met what would end up being his best friend, Bob. My Grandparents ended up going on 29 ocean cruises with Bob and his wife over the years. Bob is still alive today and he and his wife were in attendance for the services. Bob is a big guy, very old school, with a great sense of humor that sounds like W.C. Fields when he speaks. He is also a perv and does nothing to hide that fact. About 12 years ago I brought a lesbo porn on one of our fishing trips and he watched it on one of those little VCR combo units, while he ate chicken wings, with his nose almost touching glass. to this day he still call it "that lickity split movie". After the wake service I offered my hand to help him up and he declined “because I wasn’t pretty enough”. So I motioned over to Mrs. SLB and asked her to “help get Bob up”. He didn’t really need the help but as he got to his feet he says “man that felt good” to which Mrs. SLB replied, “not as good as it was for me Bob”. Still smiling from ear-to-ear, as he was staring at Mrs. SLB’s breasts and legs, he asked her to be his nurse should he ever get sick. His sweet wife at his side just laughed and said “whatever Bob”. Man that sounds familiar.

Thankfully the wake was only a couple of hours and wasn’t a traditional wake that lasted all freaking day and night. I was a little pissed that my younger cousins didn’t have some booze like at a traditional wake though. Of course they’ve never been through anything like this before so they didn’t have the experience I do. As I approached the coffin and saw my GF laying there (he looked great!) it was tough to stomach. A stream of tears started pouring down the sides of my face but I gritted my teeth, I could see Bob watching me out of the corner of my left eye and my Father out of my right. I needed to stop. As I stared at my GF all I could think was I had to be strong for my Father, Bob and my cousins.

I was a paw bearer along with 5 of my other GF’s other grandsons. We brought the casket in and were instructed to sit in the front row on the right. This church is so tiny that I couldn’t see the front three rows on the other side of the casket, which means I couldn’t see my Dad. I obviously could see my 5 cousins sitting next to me with their heads down the entire service. I made a point to keep my chin up, my eyes dry, and to give them reassuring pats on the back.

After the mass and we got done loading the casket in the hearse, I had the far back left, I turned and my Dad was right there. He handed me the keys to the car and asked me to drive for the procession to the mausoleum. I took the keys and hugged him. He then started bawling hysterically. Thankfully his car was right there first in line behind the hearse so I quickly opened side passenger door, put my hand on top of his head and got him in much like a Secret Service agent would protecting the President.

Not a word was spoken on the way to my GF’s final resting place and little did I know but in small town, people pull their car over to the shoulder when a funeral procession is passing by. It seemed so appropriate for somebody that was so respected. The Navy Honor Guard was waiting for us and when arrived and as we went to take the casket out of the hearse, it started to rain. It was the coldest rain I’ve ever felt. Thankfully the final blessing was inside. After the priest said a few more prayers, it was officially over. I thought. Bob, wearing his Navy hat, approached the casket, saluted, then turned and immediately walked to his car. I don’t think some of the family even saw him but it was something else. I was the second person out of the building, I really needed a smoke. As I exited I noticed it wasn’t raining, in fact, the sun was shining. I looked at the plaque that would mark my Grandparents final resting place. There it was, my last name, now that is a first for me.

***Thanks Shuke, Brad and everybody else. I just had to get this out of me. This isn’t anything I would dream of sharing with my B&M friends for a whole lot of reasons. Well, other than my cousin/big brother…who just walked into my office. It’s going to be tough but I’ll be alright.

I would like to leave you with this piece of prose that my GF wrote when he finally accepted the disease he and my GM were afflicted with.

Wherever she is, I will go

And wherever I am, she will come

I know this is true

Because we had a rare and wonderful bond.

I loved her completely

And I believe she loved me in the same way

We are apart for just a while

I believe we will be together again.

Wherever she goes,

I will follow

Wherever she leads,

She knows I will be there

Our love has no timeline

No barriers at all

She is mine and I am hers

We were meant to be together

For our love is so strong

Not even death can rend it apart.

GD! I performed a wedding on Saturday and was filling out the license this AM. I put today's date on it instead of Saturday's. Now I have to call the county clerk's office and pay for a duplicate. I don't know what happens after that. I have this crappy feeling that I have to somehow get the two witnesses to sign it again. FML.
I'd call the groom first...he's probably realized his mistake by now.
:lmao:

Love the poem Bob.. Very touching. It all sounds so familiar. Pulling over for a funeral procession is expected here, something we're taught...like blessing yourself when you drive past the church. We'd have had booze there too. :)

My kids ask all the time about my grandparents (in part because they're each named after a grandfather) and I love sharing my memories with them. I have a video of my grandfather telling us about signing up for the British Navy when he was under age. I'll share that with them one day soon.

nah, it's Scott Walkers fault.

and Thanks for sharing. Gives us a great look into what's made you the man you are.
:goodposting: I find that sometimes SLB makes me laugh, sometimes he makes me cry, sometimes he makes me sick and sometimes he arouses me (with his stories) Please don't ever change.

T&P to you and yours, Bob. One of my GB's is losing his father to an unknown liver disease. It appears he was diagnosed in December, and didn't tell anybody...including his wife. :kicksrock:

Kind of a cool story here..... A proud kind for me anyway.

So DaughterPack has been having trouble making friends during her first year in college/ Not with everyone, just the girls in her choirs. Other girls and guys she was getting along great with, it was just the choirs. She felt like she was being shut out.

Last week a couple of the girls finally started talking to her. They said, "Ya know, you aren't stuck up or anything, you're really nice." To which she was shuked.... She is NOT the stuck up type.

As they were talking the girls told her that she was known as the "incoming superstar freshman girl" therefore everyone assumed she was unapproachable and stuck up. Kind of a bittersweet moment for my daughter as she was hurt but at the same time happy.

Anyway, since last week, she has friends coming out of the woodwork.

Makes me proud!

My 16 year old has been seeing this 17 year old girl since pretty much the same time he broke up with his gf of over a year in January. (insert reminder of the receipt found in March) I made some mention yesterday like "pick up your laundry before your girlfriend gets here" to which he replies "she's not my girlfriend".
