GM's thread about nothing (32 Viewers)

This is where we tell all the personal #### that goes on in our lives, right? Well, I'm a few whiskeys in so I figure I'll share some of the personal, painful crap going on with me.

I've mentioned my son has some speech delays. He's been going to a preschool for a couple months and seeing a speech therapist. This week, they had us come in and they gave him an ***official*** medical diagnosis - autism. They did this so that he can get some additional treatment/attention and it's based on 3 major criteria at this point - speech delay, a lack of socialization with peers and repetitive behavior.

Now, maybe I'm just in denial but outside of the speech delay, which is undeniable the other two are borderline. I mean, I haven't really seen any 2 year olds who really engage with their peers and it's not like he has social or emotional issues. He loves to give hugs and often engages adults in interaction. They mostly based it on the fact that he doesn't have a ton of sustained eye contact with people he's not familiar with. #### - I'm not sure you couldn't say the same about me.

As for the repetive behavior, I don't really see that at all. Before we moved he used to run laps around our kitchen island and that's largely what they based that on.

Regardless, I understand the diagnosis was mostly to get him more help, which I really can't complain about. However, this has hit my wife pretty hard and along with the new city, new job, etc etc, it's about the last thing I really need to deal with.

Anyway, I'm going to go pour myself another drink.

Man, Drifter, that is rough, I feel for ya bud, hang in there. I can't say much but sounds like this is when your wife really needs you; that should actually help you through this. Take care.

Drifter> sorry to hear that things are a little rough for you right now.

Two things:

1.) Good friends of mine went through a VERY similar situation - child wasn't really communicating, etc. and preliminary "findings" had the parents prepared for a full-blown autism diagnosis. As it turned out, the boy just needed a little more time and now the kid won't shut up. ;) Not telling you that to get any hopes up (feels wrong to put it that way, but I think you know what I mean), but I would guess that this diagnosis isn't the end of this.

2.) Another good friend of mine has two autistic children, both of whom are at a fairly severe level. But - every child has his/her eccentricities, and you will learn what he likes and - more importantly - how to talk to/reason with/scold/punish/love/cherish him.

We're here for you to vent, whiskey or not. Keep your chin up and use the strength the collective FFA will give you to support your wife and especially your son.

This is a lovely and insightful post. I've nothing to add, with no relevant experiences, but just wish to say good luck with everything, Drifter.

Thanks. Like I said, I may ber on denial but I just don't see it. If it's accurate it's minor. Also if it's accurate, I think my younger brother, who my son takes after, might also be autistic yet undiagnosed.

Sorry to hear about that, Drifter. I sure hope things work out great. I don't know squat about what you're dealing with, but I'm curious about the speech delay. At two is he speaking at all? Just simple words? Some phrases? Again, I only ask out of curiosity. One of my daughter's cousins went through similar and is now the cutest little talker ever. She came through lots of extra language help with this accent of her own creation that is the cutest thing in the world. She lied to my kid this weekend about her being welcome over for a sleepover. Auntie called me and said, um NO. Haha. I asked the little cutie why she lied about it, and in that darling little accent, she said, "Wayo, sontines it woiks win I tayo a lie!" :)

Sonny, I'm not superbaked, but I wish I was.

YSR, use the oven method for braising. Consistent oven heat is superior to stove top flames. Don't hesitate to throw in onion slices, cumin, chile, a little lemon and maybe sear it in bacon fat.

So, he was a little slow in developing his first words but at about 15-16 months he started throwing out the ball, car, dog words. When we would take him in the car, he'd constantly look out the window going, "Car...car...CAR...car..." at the various cars we passed. Then, around 20 months, he stopped talking as much. We had a lot going on (new job, new city, new baby) and we didn't notice - or at least I didn't. Then my wife pointed out that he wasn't developing new words and, in fact, he wasn't even saying the words he used to say a lot. At 2 we got him into speech therapy and the old words came back but new words came along slowly and every word is just a label. He doesn't use words to ask for things or to express concepts. The one exception to this was one night when I was putting him to bed. I read him "Good night moon" and afterwards I was leaning over him and I told him, "Tomorrow, you and I are going to have a lot of fun. We'll make some bacon (he loves bacon), go to the park and play a lot. But right now, it's time for night night and for you to go to sleep, have good little boy dreams and I'll see you tomorrow. Your my favorite little boy in the world and I love you." I gave him a kiss and he looked at me and said, "Da Da" with a smile on his face and gave me a kiss. That's the one and only time he's really tried to communicate more than a label with his words. I actually made the mistake of telling my wife and she started crying because she is getting chewed up inside waiting for her to say "mama" or "mama I need you" or anything like that. Tangent there - sorry, I've been drinking. The point is that he doesn't communicate like he should at 2.5. He has his own ways and he's nothing like the hands by the face, yell when they get hugged stereotype. In most other respects he seems as normal as can be for someone who just doesn't have any words.

I'll add that he knows a lot more words that he doesn't say. When we read books, I ask him where's the X and he knows a surprising amount but he just won't say them.

On a not so somber note: I made some fantastic burgers tonight. 80/20 meat (who doesn't like Pareto meat?), salt, garlic powder, a ton of black pepper, worcestercestercestershire sauce. Grilled over coals with a handful of hickory. Topped with bacon, Bermuda onion and 18 month aged English cheddar (cheddar should absolutely be spoken about like an aged scotch. You people eating dyed orange Lucerne cheddar don't know what you're missing). Absolutely delicious and a firm argument why even when cooking the simple hamburger, propane should be the last fuel you seek to engage.

We should talk. But speech delays and parallel play by boys into their deep 3s and even 4s doesn't sound like an automatic call for autism in my own limited experience. Hell- that would put just about every boy in lower Manhattan as autistic. Can't talk to the repetitive behaviour. My son just turned 4, has some big articulation issues (getting city help with speech therapy thank god), and is pretty shy around the playground. He's only just in the last few months really gotten interested in finding buddies to play with, rather than just doing his own thing. Some kids just need a little extra time to develop their social skills. That said- I wouldn't be taking the autism diagnosis lightly- IIRC< early intervention/therapy works wonders. Or get another opinion.Sorry you guys are having to go through it- whatever "it" might turn out to be.

Thanks GB (and I mean that acronym sincerely). I'm not taking it lightly and am very thankful that there happens to be a place here in Seattle that specializes in this kind of thing for 2-3 year olds. I will not deny anything that may help my boy out. That said, I'm not buying in quite yet whether it's denial or not.

Yeah- I don't think you have to be in denial to get another/more opinions about this. You know your kid way better than a new speech therapist will ever know your kid.

quick question for you about the speech/OT therapy... is your place chock full of hot young female therapists like ours? I'm using the word "hot" a little loosely- they all have astonishingly good bodies and astonishingly meh faces.

Ohhhhhh.... another observation: is it wrong that I got a little.., aroused... waiting in the materinity triage room, listening to women go through labor? it was like listening to a bunch of women having multiple orgasms... for hours.

Someone wrote on FaceBook that they want to create a new FB account with the name: Absoulutely Nobody. Then, whenever someone else updates their status with something stupid, he will "like" the status and that will show up as "Absolutely Nobody likes this". I find this to be brilliant. It is easy to create a secondary FB account? It would seem to me that people would set up funny secondary account names alot, but I've never seen it happen. Does FaceBook frown upon this type humor?
I have two. Never been an issue.
IIRC, you can change your name on your actual account and switch everyone to private view so you don't have to go through the trouble of refriending all of your friends. Plus, I assume that the schtick would get old after awhile, so it's an easy switch by just changing your name back.

Hang in there man....hopefully the initial outlook is worst case scenario and it ends up being something different

Another food question...going over to a friend's house on Saturday for a BBQ. He's cooking ribs and we're supposed to bring a side. I came up with baked beans or mac and cheese. Any other suggestions/recipes?
Not a new suggestion from what you already planned, but the following is excellent..."Brown 1 lb hamburger, drain. One, maybe two apples chopped and I usually add half a red onion during browning to cook the hell out of it.In the pan you will bake in, mix 4, 15 oz cans pork and beans, 1/4-1/2 cup raisins 2 tablespoons ketchup, 2 teaspoons mustard, about a half cup of dark molasses. I normally toss in about 2 tablespoons chipotle powder too. Bake 350 for at least an hour until the top is darkened."The quote is via my wife when I asked for this recipe for a bbq recently. Really solid, easy, and gets destroyed every time. Very tasty. I think the next time that I make them I will use a darker baked bean and cut some of the molasses, but this is easy and a winner.
BBQ got delayed until today, but I got curious and tasted these cold (had them "marinating" in the fridge since friday) and they're great

Glad that you liked them, I will pass the complement on.I always appreciate when she makes extra and leaves some at home...can eat these as a stand-alone meal (hot or cold).

Newborns are creepy looking.
You should see them when it's just their head sticking out of a stretched to hell hoo ha and they're all purple and covered in white slime. It's like a scene from a horror movie.

Hang in there drifter.

Am I right that teachers gave you this diagnosis? Shouldn't it come from a doctor?

I have nothing else to add, but feel for you brother.

Pediatrician at the clinic/school he's been attending based on questioning us and observations from his teachers and speech therapist.

Speaking of not going to Denver...

I might need a little help from the more mobile folks here.

We were supposed to fly to Denver in July to attend a "couples baby shower" for a good friend of my wife (we'll call her Amy). This is Amy's first baby so it's a big freaking deal or something. Anyway Amy somehow convinced my wife that we should fly out for this thing. The women are going to do women stuff while guys are going to shoot guns and go cow tipping or something.

After looking at airfare, hotels, car rental, our schedule etc this whole trip looks like a fuster cluck. Unless we want to spend boatloads we would end up spending something like 33 hours in Colorado. We also aren't going to know anybody there aside from Amy and her husband. I assumed that my wife was all gung-ho over this but last night she tells me she'd rather not go. Wife says she'd rather take the cash we set aside and go to Vegas or something.

The problem is she doesn't want to tell her 7-month-preggo friend that we're not coming because we think it will be a waste of time and money.

I'm thinking we tell Amy that I got some wicked ear infection or something and simply can't fly.

Anybody know of a good medical related excuse not to fly? It can't be something that would prevent travel in general since we're probably going to drive to Vegas that same weekend.

 C-Section has to be the craziest thing I have ever witnessed. "Um, honey, the Dr has her arm up to elbow in there. Do you know where the baby is? This looks bad." Then seeing that little head pop out of mom's belly was just bizarre. Like a baby bird in a nest.

Anyway. Congrats. I like LaFlappa.

Can someone tell me what kind of snake this is? You'll probably have to zoom a little.
 Python?
Ha. No. My research shows it to be a corn snake, and it's not venomous. I came inches from stepping on it on my patio earlier. Snakes are the one thing I fear more than flying, so I just needed to know if I could ever go outside again.
Whatever kind of snake it is can be dealt with by a shovel

Made this for a family reunion today - really good. Unfortunately, we got there a few minutes late, and most folks had already gone thru the food line, so I brought an ###-load (pun intended) home. T's & P's accepted in advance for my wife.

I feel your pain. Many times the wife and I have come across such decisions- where neither really wants to go and its obscenely expensive.first off, don't do it.secondly, an ill parent is off their radar and a great excuse.

McJose, could you convince them you're seven months pregnant?

ETA: A middle ear infection or an upper respiratory infection are perfect excuses that would not prevent car travel.
