What's the worst way anyone you know has died?

I started typing an answer and realized this might not be a great direction for this thread. Certainly not for me.

Fair point. My grandmother died fairly recently so between this and YSR's tragedy it crossed my mind.At the service I realized my grandma was one of the most unintentionally racist people I've ever met. We had some good laughs swapping stories.

When I was a kid (early teens or so) I remember my black friend came over and while I was grabbing some stuff upstairs, my grandma was eating some pork rinds. She offered some to my friend and he declined the offer. She insisted he try some, saying "Your people really like these."

Another time we were playing Uno and she was trying to make her mind up. She started muttering "Eenie meanie, miny moe, catch a ###### (n-word) by the toe."

Yet another time my two half brothers were at the table eating a bowl of cereal with our cousin. They were all no older than 12. My cousin lifted the bowl to drink the last of the milk and my grandma yelled at her not to do that as it was poor manners. My cousin pointed to my half brothers and whined "But they're doing it!" My grandma said "It's okay. They're Mexican."

Damn she was racist.

Yeah...that's (sadly) how is was for most people back in the day.Any time basketball would be on TV my grandmother would say one of two things...sometimes both.

Just got back from my family reunion. Bunch a family drives three hours out to the rural school where we rent the cafeteria for the day. I end up spending the day talking with family that live in the same city. We small talk with family we never see, but those conversations could really be recorded and just played each year as we all stay home.

I need to know the name of the town since I have family in pretty much every small town within three hours of where you live.

Maysville, OK.My second cross of the Red River this month, and I think I am past my quota. The kids and wife stayed behind as they had a birthday party to attend, so I was able to get some quality time with my brother and my dad without having to worry about what my kids were doing. But again, I could have done that here in town.

Weak crop so I see no reason he can't go back there and beat these. Baffert blamed his latest on his instructions to Garcia so you can excuse the hiccup if you want to. Still, he shoulda been able to win that regardless. If Baffert is convinced enough he'll take to dirt to ship him out, that's good enough for me. Rail is dead today, btw, not good having to break from there.Shackleford was one of the few that impressed me, a standout in the Triple Crown. Game horse.Astrology is interesting to me, if you can throw it his last. He was only a few lengths behind Shack back in May, no reason he hasn't developed some more and could turn the tables. At 8-1 vs even money (Shack), worth a look.

My Great Grandmother would say colored people but I never heard her say the N word. She once told me that colored people are always smoking dope.

That is a GREAT spot, seriously doesn't get better, and not just on Kauai. Haena's killer and Tunnels is probly the nicest beach there (or Ke'e), which is saying something. Good snorkeling right out front this time of year with lots of turtles. Speaking of which, it's also where Bethany survived that tiger shark attack (they just did some movie about), losing an arm. Also the best trail (Kalalau) you'll probly ever get to hike nearby on the Na Pali coast.Excellent airfare too, what are you thinking??? F your mom.

Thanks, much aloha!You know I want your advice and would have loved ideas, but this was so spur of the moment I didn't have time. I doubt it mattered. Every day was scheduled by my friend (if I wanted to join him which seemed like the thing to do). Wednesday through Friday were three of the best vacation days in the history of the world. All diving, no hiking, golfing, windsurfing, sailing or anything. Just diving. Thursday I dove Ni'ihau and not that rock formation off the north shore that the charters use, but right off the actual east cliffs of the forbidden island. Pretty sure the Holy Grail is hidden there. Very rare to get permission (he's doing volunteer save the environment stuff). Endangered monk seals as friendly as dogs in the park. Wednesday was drifting the outter reef in this excellent conveyor of a summer current on Tunnels. Very fun because we were spearing invasive species. Did a mile+ drift three times, and would have done another if not for the sun going down. I had a small (2 1/2 foot) white tip shark tear a ta'ape (unwelcome pretty yellow little dead fish) right off my stringer. What a rush. It made me reconsider the prudence of attaching 25 dead bleeding fish to my hip and swimming the same water where surfer girl lost an arm. Eek. Friday was free diving Na Pali. I stayed shallow with just a snorkel because of the flight back, but even in 12 feet of water that place is mindblowing. The currents there are definitely advanced though. We beached the boat on three sand strips accesible by boat only. It's all about cliffs, waterfalls and rainbows though. This guy has a 26' military spec 400 hp Zodiac rescue boat. Fast fun. The charters get to Ni'ihau in 2 and a half hours. Took us less than 30 minutes. Great stuff.

Sad it's over. Going back in February maybe for some big waves and definitely to do the dry side and the canyon.

My kid was runnerup in the Toluca Lake 10-12 year old junior tennis tourney at her summer camp.

Wow, you didn't need any help at all, that is a GREAT trip. Your buddy is dialed in. Diving Na Pali? AND Ni'ihau??? Nice work, very few get to go there. Having a boat like that is huge. Didn't know you were that into diving, very cool, I don't know #### about diving. Glad it worked out so well.

I do not understand the love for that place. It's mediocre. And incredibly overpriced. Maybe I'm spoiled living in SoCal but there are dozens upon dozens places I can visit that are better on any given day.

I'm ambivalent on professional fireworks shows, but there's no better combination than a childlike love of blowing #### up and an adult's bankroll to buy #### that blows up in dramatic fashion. Add alcohol and it's a win-win-win.

Damn fine posting. The 4th is my favorite holiday for this reason. My brother and I buy a couple hundred bucks worth of fireworks, then wrap up the evening with a roman candle fight. I did get shot in the face this year, so next year I'm going with some form of helmet, but it's still an incredibly fun, irresponsible, dangerous, foolish, great time.

I just got word that a friend of mine died in a mountain biking accident earlier this afternoon. The obvious grief aside, he died in a horrible manner. He wrecked his bike into a hornets' nest and was stung something like 1000 times. They airlifted him to the hospital but I guess he went into anaphylactic shock and didn't make it. Just horrible. :(

Question for non-Minnesota and non-Wisconsin people only: Do you know what cheese curds are?

Absolutely. In fact, my wife made a joke this morning as we awoke from our campsite, about 17 miles eat of Tillamook, home of the Tillamook Cheese Factory. She asked if I wanted to head there and eat some cheese curds, which I love and she hates. She loves cheese, but hates curds. I think they are delicious.The only thing better is having Shuke fry them up and serve them to you with an apron on.

One of my friends was diving off his boat today in water which was more shallow than he thought and broke his neck in 3 places. He just called me about an hour ago. Lucky to be alive. Even more lucky to not be paralyzed. He almost figured out one side of the argument for me, but luckily took a helicopter flight to the hospital where he's waiting on the official prognosis.

For a wedding present I think I'd want a tree. Every year you could measure the growth in your relationship as well as the tree. You could watch it turn colors with the autumn frost, lose it's leaves and bear the winter snow, and come to life again in the spring. Birds will find shelter in its branches. Friend of a friend paralyzed himself my diving into a pool....don't even think alocohol was involved.A guy 5 years younger than me in our frat died when he fell about 15 ft high while rigging up some crazy ### zip line and fell straight on his head. No alcohol was involved at all, and to top it off there was like 30 witnesses...he just happened to be the one that was going first. Stupid guys being guys ####, but nothing that I (or most people in this thread I assume) haven't done before. My brother saw it happened, said it was absolutely awful.

I've had some good experiences and some bad ones. Most of the bad ones involve their food hitting my gut like a bowling ball. It's a gut bomb at times. Kind of like the chips. The meats seemed better years ago, now just bland. Beans need more flavor. Salsas are kind of boring.

Thanks for the condolences, all. I didn't mean to throw myself a pity party or start a morbid discussion, I was (and still am) just a little in shock at the bizarre nature of his death. He was an avid mountain biker and adventure racer, so I'm trying to remind myself that he died doing something he absolutely loved.

He was one of the most genuinely well-liked people in my hometown, and it's been really heartbreaking to see how wide his reach was. I'm heading to SC tomorrow, most likely, for services.

Close call: I was at a friend's bachelor party out on Lake Champlain. We were out boating, and all of us somehow forgot about the anchor. Dumb. We got going to about 40 mph, and of course the anchor comes flying out of the water, swings around the back of the boat, and hits the bachelor in the back. No real damage done, but it was pretty scary.

Jeebus.Spent all day on Long Island sound on a 38 footer. All of us are lifetime boaters, and were trading war stories. I told the one about when we were in high school *(all of us were 16-17), water skiing off the back of a speed boat with a 75 hp outboard Mercury, and out buddy wiped out. We circled back around, just like we had hundreds (thousands?). None of us could spot him, and just as we slowed down to trolling speed we heard a thud and motor kicked up.Sickest. Feeling. Ever.Don't want to make this a long story, dude turned out OK. Over 100 stitches, but no major organ damage. Scared the crap out of all of us, though, and probably cured us for life of ever taking anything for granted on the water. I am so anal-retentive when I'm before I go out and while we're on the water it's ridiculous.
