GMs Thread About Novels
We need a side bet between you and GM for the Rose Bowl, don't we? Embarrassing picture variety?
I was thinking about offering up a side bet a week or so ago. Figured I'd let the game get a little closer.GM>Thoughts?
It should be noted that GM is a known Big10 hater and thinks his Ducks will mop the floor with your Badgers. :coffee:
Then he'll have no problem offering points as well.

6.5 I think, right?

Soooooo...

Two jobs ago there was a paralegal who worked for me. Really sweet and kind-hearted woman, a bit older (probably early 60s by now), but one of those people that just seems to have everything go wrong for her, in her head at least.

Company imploded in 2002 but we stayed in touch, on my end really just because she is a very good person and I always felt bad about how unhappy her life was. She really seemed to cling to me as I don't think she had very many people she trusted or who were kind to her. She moved to Minneapolis and then Montana and then back to MN. I've been worried about her at various times over the years as things never are going well. At one point I was extremely worried as she started sending me a bunch of her possessions and I thought she might be suicidal. Along the way I've just tried to be supportive and offer help where I can.

So about a week ago I got an e-mail from her that was the usual litany of everything that had gone wrong for her in the few months since we'd last communicated. There was something odd about the e-mail in that I felt like she was setting up to ask me something but it was just a vague feeling. I received another e-mail from her a day or two later, which was unusual, and that was sparked even more concern as it was just an update to say that her claim for long-term disability had been denied or some such. Having not heard anything about this before it was especially odd.

Today I received the following e-mail FROM HER CAT. You didn't read that wrong; she wrote it as if it were coming from her cat.

Dear Aunt Krista: Ah, what a life I lead taking care of mom. She is a disaster! This last "go round" with the wrist did me in. I don't know what she would have done without me! I have gotten her a couple of interviews but we don't have a permanent job and that worries me. I have applied for HUD relief for the house payment and sent her to a medical clinic with a "sliding fee" schedule - whatever that means because it is $60.00 per visit plus what ever else they do. At least mom got her meds refilled for 6 months.....after which time we better have a job. She has guaranteed me I won't be homeless in that I can bunk with you for a few months if need be. But, I would be very sad as mom and I have been together quite a long time...So if you know of any jobs please let us know as mom and I have the flexibility to move. Love, Us

Oooooooof. I picked the wrong night to enter the GMTAN fray. I'm gonna go undrink this bourbon and pretend this never happened...back to lurk mode. Sorry for the interruption.
7 minutes, huh?

FACT: GM Paid for his entire 2010 Rose Bowl trip by betting ON Ohio State +4 and ML. FACT: GM Thinks Wisconsin is the only Big-10 team worth a damn this year.

FACT: GM Has already wagered a tidy sum on Wisconsin +6.5

What was it you said in chat again? About Oregon and the championship and destroying a Big 10 team instead? (this of course was before dreamy McBarkley destroyed you)

Yeah, everytime I drink the Kelly Kool-Aid it tends to bite me in my giant white butt. :kicksrock:

Virgin Diaries on TLC.
Well whatever you do André Previn, please ensure you DO NOT provide us with any sort of description of this show. Not like anybody here would be remotely interested in such a show or anything.
 A bunch of 30+ year old virgins. One of them had never kissed a girl. Oddly enough, none of them were wearing pointy ears, like Spork from Star Trek.
My ex-wife's best friend is a virgin. She's 36. Just moved back to Oregon after 7 years in NYC getting her law degree. Lived in Brooklyn. She's not the ugliest girl in the world, but she's not trip to Holywood either. I've absolutely done worse. She's smart and witty. I don't get it. I ask all the time if she's a lesbian, but she's not. Just hasn't ever gotten anywhere close to riding the pony. Zooks, you want her number?
This show is boggling teh mind.

Wow. I feel bad for laughing at this since this woman (assuming it's not Tanner) seems to have some serious issues. Either way, I think you should post your response to her and any other future cat emails she sends to you.

Hhhhmmmm... 36 year old virgin, not ugly but not really attractive, she's a lawyer, GM has done worse, she's smart and witty, non-lesbian..... Oh hell yes I want her number!!!! I will make love to this woman for approximately 7 and half awkward minutes and she'll either be amazed and wonder why she's waited 36 years for this, or she will definitely turn lesbian. I'm very pro-lesbian, so I figure this is a win-win situation. Let's make this happen.

OH HOLY MOTHER F'N CAPS LOCK.....THERE ARE BOYS - BOYS - IN THESE PAGEANTS. Kill me.
My wife has started to watch this show off and on. This may be grounds for divorce. If she tried to put our almost 3 year old in one of these, I'd kidnap my kid and head to someplace like Iran where she'd be safer.

On the plus side, maybe her insanity will qualify her for the long term disability she wants.

Tre> what should I read next?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson

The Cypress House - Michael Koryta

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson

The Night Country - Stewart O'Nan

Pattern Recognition - William Gibson

Prayers for the Assassin - Robert Ferrigno

Anathem - Neal Stephenson

Everville - Clive Barker

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

The Postman - David Brin

Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood

Weaveworld - Clive Barker

Only Begotten Daughter - James Morrow
I've read the bolded.I think I'd recommend Postman or Cryptonomicon most highly. Oryx and Crake is pretty good, mostly because I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic stuff. O'Nan's Night Country is alright too...a lot of his stuff is small town noir type stuff and on the depressing side. I have to be in the mood for it. I've also read A Prayer for the Dying (majorly depressing) and Speed Queen (which I enjoyed quite a bit).
You know I'm a slow reader and Cryptonomicon seems like an investment. I'm not sure I even understand the premise of the story.

Virgin by choice? I don't get it.

Oh, and I'm watching TLC waiting for the virgins. I'm now 15 minutes in to a show called "Toddlers & Tiaras". I want a cruel and horrible death to befall every single parent, coach and MC invovled with this turd show. I'm not kidding. I want Dexter to break in and murder them all.
Hate everything about this show and the people in it.

So I got some things from Amazon, and USPS delivered yesterday - put the box on our front porch. But we didn't know. It rained last night and a book in the box is a little wet. I guess this is my fault for leaving the box out there, but I am disappointed that Amazon doesn't shrink wrap their books to protect them, I thought they used to.

What would you do?

Probably call Amazon or the company that shipped it.My wife bought one of our neices a shirt this year and it was shipped in one of those gray tyvek envelopes. When she went to open it, you need scissors to get the thing open and well, she snipped the shirt a bit. She sent of an email explaining what happened and asked if they could kindly send her a new one, and they did, no charge.

That's a pretty special brand of crazy.
I think -fish- is hiring
I've got a horribly uncomfortable situation with my current paralegal. I'm all set for now.

I forgot to ask this when I mentioned my work xmas party the other day. Have you ever seen someone bring their 6 year old daughter to their work xmas party as a their guest? Would you ever consider doing this? A Saturday night, nice restaurant, dinner, drinking and dancing. The female employee that did this is probably in her mid 20's and is a non-milf. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

How many total people at the party?

Call Amazon. From what I've heard, they have fantastic customer service in areas such as this.

I'm pretty sure they would send me a replacement no problem. Just wondering if this is ethical. Yes, I'm like that.
