GM's thread about nothing (25 Viewers)

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it! We're at my parents' for lunch then trekking back for dinner at the Hoarders'. Great weekend.

Congrats to my Bulldogs for almost pulling off the upset for the Nat Championship in the Frozen Four.

Congrats to any BC fans here. It was a great game.

Friday Mrs TRF and I went to a funeral.

I had to watch a friend of mine bury his oldest son. See, Charlie is somewhat of a "rebel". Literally. Vietnam vet. Old fuzzy green home made tats on his arms. Drives a truck. Rides a Harley. He's not the kind of guy most of you would be caught dead hanging around. Not a wealthy man. Good man, just different than most of us. Charlie and I have shared many beers over the last 15 years. MANY.

Well, last Tuesday afternoon his oldest son, 36, was in an accident. He was driving his truck in Colorado. Hit a guard rail was thrown between the truck and the rail and dragged between them for about 10 yards...then thrown under the truck where it ran over his head.

Service was Friday. Picture Charlie...and all the stereotypes that surround your mental image of him. All of them are true. More than just Charlie, he represents his entire family tree. Mrs TRF and I were definitely the minority at the service. There were a lot of tats, bandanas, t-shirts, jeans, etc. You get the picture.

The church service was normal. We drive to the grave site. There was a quick announcement from the preacher that insurance was about $1300 short of the funeral costs, that donations would be accepted. Then Charlie gets up and makes an announcement that they were about to lower the coffin into the whole. Whoever didn't have the stomach for it could leave. Then he said that he wanted to be the last person to tuck his son in. They lowered the coffin and he got a shovel and literally filled the hole in. It tore my heart out to think of having to do that for my kids. It took him about an hour to finish the job. Shovel by shovel. Thud by thud. Very heart breaking to watch.

Afterwards there was a little dinner at the church. Mrs TRF and I were sitting across from Charlie and his wife. His skinny 21 year old grand son walks up to him. Bends down. "Grandpa, I don't have much, but (wife) and I wanted to help out. This is all I have." He gave Charlie about $100. Holy ####. It tore my heart out. Tears across the board. Of course Charlie is a man and didn't want to accept it. I pulled him aside and reminded him that this was a blessing for not only him, but for his grandson as well. Let him give. He wants to.

Overall it was one of the most difficult funerals I've ever attended.

That's all.

Wow. That's kind of a beautiful but heartbreaking story.

I'm reminded that while out of the country, I neglected to express condolences to fish, SLB, and others on their losses. Bogart, I found your tribute to your (step)father extremely touching.

and that bad #### keeps piling up. one of by best friend's daughters (7, like mine) is having emergency surgery right now. she tore her pancreas in half in a skiing accident. those of you that pray, please get on it.

Damn. All positive karma that kid's way. With so much awfulness fallen on the GMTAN community, I'm thinking that we're all going to have an epic summer. It's got to balance out, right? It has to. Cosmic law and all that.

I'm on board with this. Waiting for incredible amounts of good fortune to start rolling in.

In one of the most interesting FFA developments:the word **** is no longer filtered
It's still filtered, they just try to be smart about it so you can not use it as an insult. I think "****" is not filtered but "a ####" is. **** VermeilDon't be a ####Charles DickensCharles is a DickinsCharles is a ####Donkey DickDick TrickleBo DerDick

Prayers are also in here. Had the best family Easter today. I need to find a job that pays me to live on a place in the middle of nowhere like Angrywifes parents. Ended the day by splashing through the creek on a four wheeler with JR and then stopping to throw rocks in it for a half hour or so.

Got together with the new girl again tonight.

Had wine on the patio of a local place as we watched the Masters for a bit

Came back to my place, finished off the masters and had some, ahem, fun

Had some sushi for dinner, went back to her place for some champagne, more fun and watched some Mad Men

Just wanted to let you know that it's not all bad out here in the world of the GMTAN

:bag:Phone records indicate that I called SLB and Tre. I have zero recollection of either call....I shouldn't say that. I recall calling Tre about life-size jenga rules....I think..it was probably worse.Either way, I publicly apologize for anything I said. I honestly do not remember calling either of you. I made a point to stay off of social media this weekend because of stuff like that. And then I woke up at 6am Saturday morning to golf with my in laws (after I made an ### out of myself Friday night) to start drinking. 12 hours later I text SLB how drunk I am and how we need to party together :bag:I'm sorry SLB and Tre :bag:

Done.

I had a badass day.

Had family over for Easter Breakfast at 7 this AM (which was a bit of an early start), got to hang out with the wife for a couple hours, then headed over to dad's place. We watched the Masters, Paris-Roubaix (a bike race), and made five gallons of beer, which was my inaugural effort. It seemed really easy. I'm almost worried I screwed something up because it was so easy. We'll find out in a couple weeks.

:goodposting: Charlie could be related to me.

This was a pretty mellow Easter for me. Wife was out of town and oldest kid had to work. Younger kid and I went over to my brother's house for the Easter feast or whatever. I actually paid attention to the Masters. That double eagle Oglethorpe had was cool. And I nearly peed myself watching Phil and his goat-screw of a triple bogey on the par 3. I also spotted an African-American in the "patronage" or whatever the Confederates call the crowd.

The downside? My ultra-religious brother and his wife went to Israel a couple of weeks ago and decided to show everyone the pics...all 1300 of them or something. Actually he meant to bring the memory card with just 350. Some of the historical stuff was pretty cool. I think they were slightly offended when I kept bringing up stuff about the mosques in Jerusalem. I suppose it would be like watching a watching a baseball game in Boston and complementing the Yankees uniforms.

Most boring things other guys talk about:

Poker bad beats.

How their fantasy team is doing.

That great hole of golf they played last week.

Their adventures in beer making.

How their NCAA brackets are doing.

As long as folks are in a thopra kind of mood... one of my best friends from HS is married to Olympic gold medalist Mark Lenzi. Mark had had some health issues lately, and apparently was admitted to the hospital after suffering fainting spells. He is now in ICU, and not expected to pull through. Positive vibes would be greatly appreciated.http://blogs.fredericksburg.com/newsdesk/2012/03/28/former-olympic-diving-champion-mark-lenzi-hospitalized/
Mark passed away some time last night.I never met him, but his wife is a wonderful person, so I figure by extension he had to have been a good guy. Very, very sad for her...

Is Minnesota really cool in July? We have about a week off in the middle of July and want to take a bit of a break from the Texas heat. Wife suggested Minnesota, saying she went on a family trip to the Miss. River headwaters and it was cool in the evenings. Since several of you here are from Mn, I thought I'd get a reality check.

I'd like a lake or river cabin where I could chill for a week. I would need internet access so I could watch baseball. Scenic crap and good fishing would be expected. I would prefer need somewhere not overrun with other people, esp. kids.

Edit to add- would it be better to just keep driving north another day into Canada?
