GM's thread about nothing (32 Viewers)

Crown royal and ginger ale should be a way more popular combo.
:goodposting: bourbon and ginger is my current go-to drink
Hmm. Have to try that. What bourbon? Keep it cheap please.
I've been going with makers, but I'm a bit of a bourbon snob. I would imagine Jack & Ginger would be good
Fail.
:hey: :hey: :hey: :hey:.....Mr. Tre, i know i know i know
Jack Daniels is not a bourbon

Serious post

Just wanted to give validation that is warranted. I played golf with my dad today. We play together a lot. Usually him, my brother and me. Mostly he loses. Today he won. It just so happens that my dad is a pretty amazing athlete. He earned 12 varsity letters in high school. He was all-conference in two sports in college. To the point where he's kind of locally famous. Anyhow, usually we have a beer after golf at the clubhouse. Today, instead, I said, hey let's go to [this quirky bar which used to sponsor semi-pro teams that my dad played for in the 60s]. Dad looked at me funny, but agreed.

We went, and in the back room they have this "wall of fame," which is a hand painted wall with a bunch of portraits of famous Boston athletes, plus the names of a bunch of local heroes written around them in fancy script. I knew my dad's name was up on that wall from being there before, but all the same I asked him, "you up there dad?"

Of course he gruffly answered, "well is should be!"

So we found his name, which is cool, but what's infinitely more cool is that, for a couple hours, we sat there looking at the wall and picking out names and I would say, "dad, what about this guy, who was he?" And dad would have a story about them.

Example:

Me: "Dad, Slimmy Lee, who's that?"

Dad: "Oh Slimmy, great basketball player, like a 2-3. Make a shot from anywhere. Nice guy, too. Funny story. One time in an off-season tournament. We were playing each other hard the whole game. One point he shoves me right in the face. I hear the whistle, ok I know I got foul shots coming. But next thing I know, our coach has picked up his folding chair and is chasing Slimmy around the court."

I could write 25 more of them, because we sat there having drinks and talking old school local sports for three hours.

Anyhow, I know sometimes in this thread we deal with loss. Often when I've asked, 'what can I do to help?' I've been told, the only thing I can do is to cherish the people I have. I'm told to take advantage while they are here. So for those of you who have said that, know that it landed. Without you saying that, today wouldn't have happened.

I contrived a reason to go to a different place with dad today. Today is a day I know. I will look back on when he's gone and be thankful that I had it. The reason I'll have it is because of you dickmittens.
I've heard some of your stories about your dad and obviously seen the trophy at your place, I bet you have.

Good call out.
Someone had to say it.
Was he avoiding you?
He was watching me from the upper level. I know that much. He claimed he couldn't tailgate because his wife had a "running club" in the morning.Making up clubs to avoid drinking with your ifriends is more than a little offensive.

Ok, I know...it's a sour mash whiskey. You'll notice how I didn't directly call Jack a bourbon - its merely suggested. I couldn't bring myself to suggest Old Crow and Ginger

Most whiskeys (including bourbons) are sour mash. Jack Daniels is also not, not considered a Bourbon because it's from Tennessee. It's not a bourbon because it is filtered through charcoal and THAT is where it breaks the bourbon purity definition, contrary to popular belief.

Met a girl at a bar a couple weekends ago when I was out with my buddies. Been in occasional contact (texts) with her since then - just lined up a date for Thursday night. She seems cute, quirky and fun. I'm actually looking forward to this one a bit.

Pro tip if you ever want to use the search function for a 2 or 3 letter word:

"_xxx_"

Where

_ = space

xxx = word

The function treats the space as a character

Should I make start a thread, or keep the secret here?

have the boys by myself til tuesday while Mrs. TF is on a bachelorette party...bout to pour my first whiskey of the weekend
Made it through the first full day...jeebus christ I'm mentally drained. Thank God for college FB and booze.ETA: 2 of the other dad's whose wives were at the bachelorette party came over...At one point, I was trying to watch the LSU game and realized there were 5 kids under 5 running around my house. oof
Got a call from day care at about 3pm. Both boys have pink eye. An hour in the urgent care with them was a blast. On the plus side, I get to work from home tomorrow

Sorry, I'm not staying to watch an entire Gopher football game on a beautiful Saturday when the kids are at my parents' house for the majority of the day.
Dude, we're embarking on an epic season here. When's the last time the Gophers were in the driver's seat for the Big Ten? Man...good thing we have true fans like me and Tre.
Did I miss how you're a Gopher fan? Is my notebook down? Is my shtick meter down? How's your little one doing? My GB has his third daughter yesterday, Olivia Faith. We visited them tonight and got a pic of Charles with her laying in the bed. I said "Mark, I hope for your sake this doesn't happen in about 16 years".He said "You mean for his sake...she's the one crying and they haven't even touched each other" :lmao:

I remember GM as a huge Marion Barber fan. His love for the Gophers is almost as crazy as his love for our Bills.

Oh, I'm just being shticky. Last year, we were all Bills fans until they started playing games in October. I like teams that are kind of off the map, so to speak. Central Michigan, Boise State long before they were the program they are now...hell, I even started going to Oregon games in '96 just because. I have no ties to the school, but bought season tickets in 2000 because I love college football. When I went to Scupper's cabin back in '06, I bought my son a Gopher's sweatshirt & matching pants. Love the colors. Plus, when they had Barber and Maroney, I used to LOVE waking up at 9am on Saturday's and rooting for the Gophers. They made me a ton of dough back then.Blah blah blah, bad attempt at funny. Little Hazel is doing sensational. Had her 2 month appointment today. She's doubled in size and is now in the 90th percentile for weight. Good little eater, this one. Pretty good sleeper too. Not much for chores or conversation, but she likes to watch football with me.How is fatherhood going for you? Game changer, no doubt.

Game changer for sure. I went back to work the day after we came home from the hospital so I don't think it's really settled in yet. He and I were hanging out watching Peyton so his best Cutler impression tonight and I thought to myself "Holy ####, I have a son and were watching football together!" I'm still trying to get my head around it. But it's been great so far. Strange times indeedI've been to every Badger-Gopher game since 97. Barber III and Maroney were beasts in college. A GB of mine played for the Gopher in the late 90s (Tre, you meet Jon). He said they were NFL bound their freshman year.

Just think, they had Barber III and Maroney.
Maroney's failure at the NFL level hurt me on a very personal level. I took to calling him "God in Shoulder Pads". Man, he was one of the best open field runners I'd ever seen...just glided through traffic. Ooops, pot.
I guess it was the weed, or something. He was an incredible athlete in college. Made Barber look like an undraftable joke.

Neither of those guys would ever touch the ganja.

They talk about running, properties of running. So it's a social club. Demented and sad, but social.
