My computer has the AIDS. I need a new one. Considering a Mac for the first time (we're iEverything other than this) but found, as expected, that wading into any Mac v. PC threads here is beyond my tolerance(hi, goonsquad!). Any thoughts from the GMTAN crew, whom I trust?

Also would be interested, if there were such a thing, in a tablet that acted a bit more like a laptop than the iPad. We have an iPad that I love, but I need the ability to edit documents more easily and upload photos, for instance. Love more of a tablet due to constant travel that argues in favor of something as light as possible.

I have an iMac at home and my work HP laptop. Either is fine really. Macs can be quirky, but once you figure out how to use them, are really good. I grew up on windows machines, so those are more native/comfortable for me. That said, I have to reboot my work laptop at least a couple times a week because programs get locked, etc. the last time the iMac was rebooted was when I lost power a month or so ago. If I were you, I'd look into a Mac book air mirror while naked.

I use a 16" pc at the office that I like as well, but there will be weeks that go by when I look up and realize the air has been doing 99% of my work. It's a great machine and worth the money. Mac isn't that different then pc in my opinion. There are some cosmetic things (file system, etc) but it isn't a huge learning curve or anything like that.

Thanks so much, guys!I've been researching online today and it seems to be coming down to the Macbook Air (not sure which) or the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, which seems to be very highly reviewed everywhere.

I do need to be able to run a lot of Microsoft applications--I work a TON in Word and a moderate amount in Excel and PowerPoint. That along with basic web-surfing and watching live streams of kittens are pretty much all I need. Oh, and as mentioned I already have an iPad and need something instead from which I can upload pictures on vacation--we take hundreds on every vacation and I need to be able easily to get them onto the device, which is why a laptop is good. I also hate not having Flash on the iPad. Otherwise it does pretty much everything I need. I don't mind the lack of keyboard on iPad--in fact I bought a keyboard case and never use it as I just liked the touchscreen better.

Ideally because I travel so much I wanted something pretty light. When I travel with just the iPad it seems a breeze compared to my laptop. That's why the two I mentioned were appealing as well.

Is it a pain to try to work in Microsoft applications on a Mac? This would be a big issue for me.

There are decent virtual machine applications for Mac which would allow you to run windows if needed, but Mac does have the office suite as well. As long as you don't venture outside of those apps you should be good.

Even if you go android, open office should work just fine.

I would probably go with the lightest, most powerful MacBook Pro, or whatever they are called nowadays. Should be easy I transfer any photos for upload and with the office suite for Mac, you should be fine for work as well.

What kind of camera do you have? SD card, cable transfer only, discs?? Either way, make sure the laptop/MacBook comes standard with that port.

I use SD cards in my cameras, and wouldn't dream of getting a laptop without an SD slot. Makes things so much easier.

ETA: I just checked the MacBook Pro's and they all have an SD-slot. Weight seems to be the biggest factor in choosing between the 13 and 15, I would go with the 15 myself, because the extra screen real estate is worth a lot when working in Excel on the road. (about an extra lbs in weight, 4.5lbs vs 5.6)

If you don't worry too much about price (which I assume is the case since it is "work related", hence deductable/expensable) I would definitely get a 512Gb Solid State drive. Solid state drives are expensive, but they are also very fast, and with a max memory option that thing would fly.

ETA2: I would think the full weight, with power adapters, machine and bag should be around 7.5lbs, which isn't too bad for a traveling kit. I would expect the price (if you go with the above) to be around 2.5 - 3k.

If you use Open Office on the Android platform you get basic Office functionality. A bunch of people I know use this and like it a lot. Going to guess the total cost is between 1k to 1.5k (the dock is a must, and so is maxing memory)

Had a terrific overnight trip with Kellen down to Eugene for the Oregon game. It was his 10th birthday gift/celebration and it was probably one of the best memories either of us has and will have being father/son. Just had a blast. He's really growing up. We had a pretty nice hotel room in downtown Eugene that was a gift from my friend from SFO who had to cancel on going to the game. Kellen thought it was sooooo fancy. We walked about 5 miles on the day, around town, around campus, to the stadium, back to the hotel. Kid swam in the indoor pool for an hour while I read the paper and sipped on a cold one. Then we got room service at like 11:30pm and stayed up late just talking about life and watching the History Channel. He's made the transformation from little kid to young adult and it was really cool bonding with him.

When I dropped him off with his mom today, he had a little tear in his eye and said "I'm so sad the weekend is over, that was the best time of my life". Cool kid, really cool memory for us. Game sucked, but the weekend ruled.

Also, I had heuyvos rancheros (sp?) for brunch with him this morning and I'm reminded of that tonight as I shake the walls of my living room. :vuvuzella:
