GM's thread about nothing (77 Viewers)

I was at a fundraiser where we are soliciting for a local school. When going through past donors one woman claimed that one of the donors had passed away recently. Without pause, in my snarky voice, I proclaimed, "Well, cross her off then." Unfortunately, there was mostly disgust as nobody seemed to get the Major League reference.
:lmao: I've done that

Got some great news today:

Dear Professor RFW,

Based upon the recommendation of the Vice President of Academic Aafairs and Provost; and with the support of the Sabbatical Leave Committee and your peers, I am pleased to approve your sabbatical leave request for Spring 2014.

In accordance with University Policy, you will be eligible for full pay during the months of your sabbatical; January 1, 2014 through May 31, 2014.

Factor in that I am not under contract for the summer months, and that means I am only making art for the first 9 months of 2014.

Part of the joy of being a professor is that you are expected to be in an expert in your field. In the UMaine system, once you have been promoted to Associate Professor and been awarded tenure, every seven years you may write a project to either get a year off at 1/2 pay or a semester off at full pay. You are expected to do research or partake in scholarly activity (like drawing pictures of you and Abby). 2 professors at my school are awarded sabbatical every year. I think there about 10 proposals or so. I am an artist, so mine document had pretty pictures. People are suckers for pictures, so I got lucky and was selected.

I would rather work 3/4 of a year and make my salary than work a full year and make yours plus work with kids all day.

BTW: Today is Piet Mondrian's birthday. My students almost unanimously declared that what he did wasn't art. I used a line from Mad Men (which was actually from a guy looking at a Rothko):

"Maybe it doesn’t (mean anything). Maybe you’re just supposed to experience it. Because when you look at it, you do feel something, right? It’s like looking into something very deep. You could fall in."

They still didn't buy it.

Great News. Let's make plans now for my nude modeling session. I'm thinking a fig leaf, plug of chew in the cheek, and a twelve gag shotgun.

When I used to see Rothko slides, I thought it was most worthless crap I had ever seen. I hated it. HATED HIM. It felt like crap with a existential manifesto wrapped around it. Then I was in New York seeing this show pairing Rothko and Pierre Bonnard, whose slides I also hated. I looked across the room, and I saw this Rothko, and it had a serious physical effect on me. It really was an experience. The colors started vibrating in a way they never had on slide projection. The orange border seemed to vibrate, and the purplish black center seemed to simultaneously recede like a deep path and project forward like door in front of me. I felt my heart rate jump- I had never felt like that looking at a painting before. It was pretty awesome. After that, I was a fan- even though many of them still leave me meh.Years later, I got married in the Rothko Chapel in Houston.

Mondrian makes me think of the Partridge Family.

Maybe you are just pantless, wearing an "I'm with stupid" t shirt, with the arrow pointing down.Keep the rest of your props.

My wife cleaned my office thoroughly for the first time in a year. Mop was black. Vacuum filters too. For some reasons I have had a splitting headache for four days and I never ever get headaches. Mold withdrawal?

Probably more likely that the disturbed mold spores and dust mites are now kicking around the air, rather than lying dormant

I've watched it about 30 times and can't tell what's going on. Did he take his mouthpiece out?
I know I'm Hippling here, but no, the deal is that the second referee on the scene seems to teleport in. The only thing missing is a puff of smoke!

Any bar recommendations in NYC? I'll be there in a couple of weeks. It will be midweek (best night = Wednesday), so I'm looking for a place that is generally active even when it's not the weekends. I can ask in the New York thread but figured I'd start here.
Don't bother. That place is dead after 7 pm.
:lmao: what neighborhood will you be in? McSorelys is always fun http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.comThey serve only 2 types of beer - light and dark
Nice; thanks, SN! Despite going to NYC fairly often, I've never even heard of it, but in looking at the website it looks like a good place to hang out as a first or last stop. Maybe only stop if it's busy.

Do you (or anyone else) have any recs for a place with a full bar? Area doesn't matter, BTW; I'll be in the fifties on the East Side but can cab/subway it pretty much anywhere in Manhattan.

 Nice. Is that Cooper talking to Harry about the picture in his office (back when Cooper had an office)? Or some other scene I'm forgetting?

Aerial: McSorley's is a must stop IMO, for the history and atmosphere, but I doubt it would be an all night place to stay for you

Bar in NY, area doesn't matter is almost too vague to be of any use...Give me some idea of the vibe you are looking for and I can likely point you in the right direction...But I would also recommend picking an area (Greenwich Village, Upper West Side, etc) and just stopping in wherever looks interesting...Have a drink...If you like it, stay...If not, there's almost definitely another place (if not many many more) within a block...Also, ask people at the bar and even bartenders to recommend spots nearby...

Bargoing in NYC is a pretty immersive experience

Thanks TU. I agree. Last time I was there, in September, I did what you suggested and just walked around on the East Side in the fifties, Turtle Bay and environs. However, it was a rainy Tuesday night and if there was action around, I wasn't finding too terribly much of it. If I'd known a bit more about the scene I think I would have done better. Since McSorley's is on 7th or 8th St b/t 2 Av and 3 Av IIRC from a few hours ago and I want to check it out, could you maybe focus me on the Lower East Side or Greenwich Village and give me a couple of recs for places with a full bar if you have the time and energy? Thanks a ton. :thumbup:ETA: as far as the vibe, just looking for a place that has a decent chance of being halfway busy on a Wednesday in March, not too loud, serves vodka and other hard stuff.

Is it common for a bar in NYC...or anywhere for that matter...to not serve vodka?
Never heard of BYOBs? Or bars that serve beer and wine only? Anyway, the recommendation by SN, which was good, is for a joint that serves beer exclusively. So no, it's not common, but that's the one rec I have so far and I wanted to get another for a place with a full bar, that's all.

Wife was on a 2.5 hour web conference with DoTerra people tonight. Apparently it's a career.

I will say that I had/have a cold and she asked me to not take medicine and use her oil stuff instead and I'm healing at about the same rate. Pretty sure medicine is a scam.

This sounds really bad.

Will you be solo? Looking more for happy hour times? Late night? With food, without food, doesn't matter? Divey? Sports-ish? Loungy? Just busy? The street directly north from McSorley's is St Mark's place, which is the mainline of the East Village...You can take that East all the way to Tompkins Square Park, with a ton of options around...It happens to be one of my favorite areas of the city

For a great beer selection and decent food, Hop Devil Grill is a couple of blocks east on St Marks off of Ave A

Ace Bar is a couple of blocks south of that...It skews younger, but has skee ball, pool tables, pinball, etc, as well as a lot of vintage memorabilia...

Burp Castle is an interesting place...GREAT Belgian beer list, but they treatthe place like a Trappist monestary...People get kicked out for being too loud...Again, not a place you'd stay for a l;ong time, but interesting

There's a cool sports bar on that block also, called Standings...It's small, and can be hit or miss crowd-wise, but it is filled with knowledgable sports fans and has a ton of TVs...

The Scratcher is a bit more of a traditional Irish pub, though they do have a full bar...It's actually a good place to go on your own, as you can usually find a decent conversation by the bar

Those are just some of my initial thoughts for that area...Like I said, let me know if there's more of a specific atmosphere you're looking for and I can likely suggest a place...You're just a few blocks from Greenwich Village also, and that has a TON of places
