Guess this is the best place to put this...My grandfather passed tonight in hospice. He was 87. He and my grandmother (who passed away 4 years ago) raised me for about 1/3 of my life. My dad died when I was 7. He was an only child, and I'm his only child. So my whole fathers family is now gone. I'm 30 and feel a little alone.Papa was a real man - hard worker, his word was absolutely gold. Honest and straightforward, very generous and charming. I hope to carry forward his legacy in my family.Good bye Dad, Papa and Grandma. Thanks for all the love.
:( This is the right spot. I loved your tribute to Papa. I'm sorry to hear that a branch of your family is gone, but they aren't...you are still there. Which means you can continue the legacy of your terrific family.

I've been trying to figure out what to type here for a while and I just don't know. Condolences, man. That is a really fantastic post.
:goodposting: Sending positive thoughts your way.

Man, today was one of the worst days of work ever. No details, other than people are ####ing stupid. I felt like quitting.

Tonight was our second practice for my son's baseball team. It's coach/kid pitch mix. For some reason I'm the designated coach pitcher. Laughable.
I think you answered your own question here.
I actually hit my son on my first pitch to him. Poor kid, was hesitant the rest of the time and didn't make contact tonight. Felt horrible.

Sounds like he was a great person!

Casino Royale>>>Skyfall>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Quantum of Solace
This guy gets it.
Gary Clark Jr on Letterman tonight
Missed it. I'm not in love with his new album. Been trying to find some of the older ones. I need the illegal album powers I think.
They don't show it @ 11:35 PT?
I thought I was still hippling. bag

Haven't had any weather outages from my directv service in years and the Genie is the best thing ever
Explain the genie to me.
It's like a DVR on steroids. Can record up to 5 live shows at once, can get picture in picture, and has a ton of storage space. The Genie DVR in my living room is also connected with the HD DVR in my bedroom via wi-fi network so can watch shows on either tv.

Sorry to hear it, my friend. :(

Have we done the DirecTV vs. Dish debate? And was a consensus reached? TIA
Directv would win this easily I think.
Because?
They are awesome in just about every way
Unless it's cloudy outside. Then you're screwed.I sometimes watch that show Undercover Boss -- I usually end up crying because they always have some really sappy story that tugs at my heart strings and I'm an easy crier. Well one episode featured Directv. So the CEO puts on a fake mustache and some dorky glasses and goes out on an install with this hard-working black chick. They (mostly she) get the dish on the roof and everything in the house installed, only it's raining so they can't actually get the signal from space down to the dude's TV. They just kind of gloss over that point in the show, but if I were the guy hoping to watch some Sunday Ticket that day I'd have been pissed.I know for a lot of folks some kind of satellite is your only option, but I wouldn't go back to a dish as long as cable were an option.
Cloudy? I live in, like, the cloudiest city on earth. Lando is my neighbor. You've all seen my glorious tanned skin. And yet 'clouds' have never once caused any sort of disturbance with my DirecTV. Only time there's ever been any sort of disruption has been during horrific snow/rain and I mean real shhitt shows outside, not your run-of-the-mill Noreasters.

:lmao:

We're not doing baseball this spring and I'm sort of relieved as it can be a tortuous season with games that drag on and on and on and if you have a die-hard coach, there will be practices and games 4-5 days a week. Way too much. But I do miss it a little too as it was cool getting to work with the other dads and chew out sunflower seeds and wear a glove and throw a ball and yell encouragement.

However, we did not use umpires, so coaches assumed the role of balls/strikes and like your team, it was a mix of dad/kid pitch (let the kids pitch until ball three, then dad steps in - no walks). I saw an empty home base in mid-game early in the season and took it upon myself to umpire. BIG MISTAKE. I made Leslie Nielson look good back there. I called one pitch a strike before it ever got to the batter box. I called another strike that bounced into the catcher's glove. I was awful. The other coach yelled at me and I had to be replaced. :lmao:

Had DISH because it's the only thing available where I live. It sucked. Service would go out when the clouds sneezed and ESPN only worked 50% of the time. No shtick. The other channels would work, but ESPN and several others would only work half the time. I ditched it last month. Going with just netflix from now on, and restaurant/bars during football season.

ETA: btw, ESPN would die when it was clear outside. Seriously. DISH is the worst service ever. And when we quit, they didn't send a guy to collect their equipment, no, the onus was on us to disassemble the junk, pack it in an empty box they mailed to us, and ship it out ourselves. I really really really hate that service.

I did get to keep the stupid dish though. Been trying to think of a cool 'found art' project to make of it.

Repost this in the "using a belt" thread. They'll high-five you for making a man out of him.

Glengarry Glen Ross be effing up the house everywhere!

ETA: This was funnier in my head. I just imagined Alex Baldwin ranting in his vulgarity-heavy tirade in every room in a house, so you hear it not in stereo or surround sound as much as omnipresence. AN EFFING CADILLAC.

Cable is over $100 a month here, before you bundle it with internet. DirecTV is offering $30/mo for the first two years

Yikes. Do you think that was specific to your area, specific to Dish, or just bad luck?

do any of y'all actually live in houston? i'll be spending some time there over the next few months...I know Char is in Pearland, but I'm typically on the east side (Katyish)
westhollow? I'm south, but work downtown. Katy is out west. Let me know when you get here, either via PM or MOC :scared:
I'm southeast (Clear Lake area) but work downtown... I'd be up for a corn hole.
Little Woodrow's? Weather is supposed to be nice (mid 70s?)
I'll be there in a few weeks and there's an Astros/Mariners game on the 23rd (Tuesday night). Out of that week, that's the least possible chance that a work dinner will pop up. Thoughts?
Extremely doubtful on ball game appearance, as I have very little interest in baseball. I am very likely able to do happy hour before though. Will check with neighbor if he can get good seats for that game.
I don't think anyone has interest in the Astros...just a good cornhole
Not that the game is going to sell out or anything, but if we're wanting to sit near one another we probably should work on getting seats. I checked Stubhub for a quantity of 5 together (just a ballpark guess, get it ballpark) and they've got section 427 (1B line, upper) for $10 apiece or 152 (RF, lower, row 1) for $28 apiece.Or we could probably walk up and roll the dice at the box office.I would vote for the section 152 seats at $28... If I'm going to see a piece of #### team play, at least don't make me strain my eyes. Looking at astros.com for single game tix, that's a good price for those seats and I'm not sure we'd do any better at the box office. What do you guys think?

Same here...........

Hang in there Bro. Thoughts and prayers to you.

I would probably just roll the dice at the box office. If they are at even 20% capacity I'd be surprised.

I really don't care which seats, but the $28 ones don't seem too bad. I spoke briefly with guru, and he might be in as well.

The DISH equipment was pretty bad. They had to replace the receiver twice in two years. Then there's the reception issue. Our little dish was on the side of a hill, pointed over a wide horse pasture, so it's not like there were any unusual obstructions. I couldn't tell you if DirectTV would have been better because DISH is the only service I could get. So who knows if I live in a satellite dead zone (do those exist?) There's nothing to compare it to. If I lived just a mile down the road, I could get cable or DirectTV.

:kicksrock:

Heaping my condolences on the pile, Mr Roboto. My grandpa partially raised me too, and I watched him get eaten by cancer. It's tough. Very tough.

Aren't the Hopper and the Genie basically the same thing?

Thorn, just about every satellite signal issue is anecdotal. Ignoramus had issues with a cloudy day. I haven't had an issue in 13" of snow  . I think for most, the technology has gotten so much better in the past 10 years that the weather is a relative non issue. But, if you go with DirecTV you can use my account number as a referral and we each get $100 :pickle:

To be fair, "cloudy" was an overstatement, but I did lose signal more than I thought I should (and way more than some of you seem to). Maybe I just had a lousy install.

Generally speaking if you signal issues on a cloudy day the installer halfassed it didn't properly align the dish when they installed it. The only time I have issues is if it's raining like hell or if snow accumulates on the dish. Maybe twice a year and it's only for a few minutes at most.
