GM's thread about nothing (14 Viewers)

I realize having a helmet is safer thab Not. But Serious question - is there an epidemic of people crashing on their bikes as they ride casually to and from work? We used to ride on half pipes and bmx courses without helmets as fast as we could go and crash all the time.

Well there you go. You can't argue with that logic.

I've biked to work and back about 100 times and have yet to crash (though that gardener snake slithering out of the brush nearly kilt me) but I wear a helmet both ways every time. I didn't wear one as a kid on a bike or a skateboard, but knowing what we know now about head injuries and prevention of injuries with helmets, I wear one. :shrug:And let's be honest, I have less of a vested interest protecting what's inside my cranium than most.

I have a 19" flat panel TV that the sound card burned out. It would make a decent monitor, if you don't need sound. You pay the shipping, it's yours. May or may not come with an arby's coupon or sex toy.
Nah, these things are cheap now, so I'll just grab one this weekend. Seattle peeps - any interest in getting a poker game going between June 8th-22nd? Wife going out of town for two weeks with the kids. Looking for some things to put on the calendar so I don't tailspin like Maverick and Goose.
Yes.
Before the 13th I'm in. After that I'm on bacon. Or vacation. My phone made it bacon and that sounds like fun so I left it

You keep telling us how smart you are then you make these posts...

Um, yes...in fact the slower and more frequent you stop, the more likely it is that the helmet will help you. Has to do with the fact that most slow velocity and accidents involving cars result in you hitting something head first. At higher speeds you tend (key word tend) to slide more.

I would think my selection of joe Johnson in round 2 of the wis sports draft would be more indicative of my stupidity. Seriously, I understand the whole helmet thing. Was just wondering if there was some sudden event that caused helmet laws after years and years of nothing.

You like football, right? Know its history? Watch old films? See pictures of Red Grange and old timers with leather helmets or no helmets at all? Wonder what changed between then and now....

Thank you. That makes plenty Of sense.

And what's with these seat-belt laws? I remember riding in the back of my Pappy's pick-up truck all the way from where the old post office used to be to the crick every day and nothing ever happened to me. Did something suddenly happen that changed all that?

Your post did make my day because the posts after were so damn funny. So thanks for that. I needed it, too--like GM, ####ty day but at least I'm not a Cubs fan.
I understand the practical matter of added safety. And yes, Better safe than sorry. And it makes sense considering cars vs bikes means the biker is a bloody mess. Was just curious about how other people do it. House get sold?

Think of it this way--you have a little girl, and would you let her ride a bike (when old enough) without a helmet? Your noggin is just as important.

Depends which house you mean. Going to Nicaragua tomorrow and still scheduled to sell Casa Camila on Monday. Memphis house is still in negotiations with douches that bid so low. I don't think it's going to happen, which is fine for now. I don't want to have to move yet. Thanks for asking; please all keep fingers crossed through Monday. Would be good progress.

How is Orb this big of a favorite based on one race? Especially one on a muddy track? The field at even money to win seems sensible here.
Derby winners who win as odds on favorite (if Orb wasn't the favorite, he was close) almost always enter Pimlico as heavy favorites. And they tend to do quite well. Smarty Jones, Big Brown come to mind. And the Florida Derby has traditionally been a great prep race, which Orb won. He has been strong all year and winning on a wet track is nothing to sneeze at. He's won at dry tracks. His works have been sharp. He's going to command a crap ton of wagering action from Joe Six Pack.

History is really in his corner here. But I'm with Cosjobs....there's no value and no fun in just betting heavy chalk. That said, he's going to be really hard to beat tomorrow and I will include him in the exotics.
I count 23 horses that have won both in history, out of a 100-some races. Mind you, more horses have done it recently, and if you take the most favorable sample possible, 8 have done it in the last 15 years. But in the 15 years prior to that, 2 have done it.

And given the two statements bolded above, which are true, I think just a straight fade of Orb makes sense. It just seems like way too much is being hung on the Derby result, which, while obviously a big race, is just one data point.

Then again, I know #### about horse racing.

I'm no handicapper. Just looked like value to me. :shrug:Rolling it (I actually went 2u) into POWERBALL!!!!! :towelwave:

This is awesome. I'm at a coffee shop watching a Friend play guitar and sing. My wife is talking with this girl here and they are hitting it off well. My daughter and her son are playing and dancing. The husband won't look me in the eye because he is afraid I'm going to recognize him from when we bartended together 13 years ago and say something about how much of a dork he was and how he hit on every girl that came in the place. :lmao:

How long should it take to ride 5 miles?I think there is a gay helmet law in my state. If that's the case, I'm going to keep driving.
I haven't ridden a bike since mine got stolen when I was 15, but I'm pretty confident you can exceed a 9MPH average.
Way to never get discouraged by anything.
Actually I take that back. I did ride a bike in Italy like 5 years ago.
Did you say "Ciao!" while on it? I don't think I'd be able to resist. I think the finger pistols would likely make an appearance as well

Horse chat news

Flaming Bird and Mrs. CC went to a party for whatever race you people are talking about, thrown by one of his classmates' mothers, a very cool artist who also owns a few horses. I passed on going. Big mistake. Apparently there were tons of MILFs everywhere and "more booze than I could keep up with," quoth Mrs. CC. They made special drinks for every horse.

They also took bets, and Flaming Bird chose some future Elmer's bottle filler named Ox-something. Yea, the horse that won. He split the pot with 3 other winners and took home $50, which he promptly used to buy this.

That's how it starts. I remember when I was 12, I mentioned to my dad that in the paper it said the chances of the Reds sweeping the A's in the WS were 40-1. A week later, he did not look happy handing over a $20.

Send him over to the Wagering Thread, you're never too young to get started.

I have to admit I would vote to retire the "Flaming Bird" thing, too. :(
