GM's thread about nothing (34 Viewers)

How long should it take to ride 5 miles?I think there is a gay helmet law in my state. If that's the case, I'm going to keep driving.
It should be a piece of cake to average 10mph. It would take you a half hour.

Do it. With a helmet, unless you want your daughter to help teach you to walk and talk again.

I too would like to buy a new bike soon. I still have an old Trek 830 that's 20 years old. I'd like something more like a road bike so I don't feel like I'm working twice as hard just overcoming friction. Whatcha got under $1k?

What kind of riding do you do? What's the purpose, terrain, distance, etc.

Weekend rides mostly. Paved paths. I usually do 15-30 miles. Not exactly a pleasure cruise with knobby mountain bike tires.

Not trying to invade privacy, but where are you living now? Good bike area?

Really excited this summer to explore some new ways home from the office. Met a fellow bike guy on the train last week who told me about a couple of cool ways back to Beaverton that involve something called Bull Mountain. 65% of my current ride is through trails without any traffic, which is really nice, but the better weather means an increase in walkers, so it slows me down. And man, some of these older walkers can be a bit surly when you try to alert them of your presence. I refuse to buy a bell, but if somebody can find me one of these I'll be eternally grateful.

New business idea: bicycle helmet with optical device that makes a noise when it sees someone on the path in front of the rider. :mansion:

Can I sit down with you and your wife you tell her about your new pursuit? ;)

Either something like this

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/multi-use/sirrus/sirruselite

or like this

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/road/allez/allezelitemidcompact

Floor prices are $750 and $1000 on those two, respectively

Benefit of a flat bar bike - more upright is more comfortable for most people, cheaper, can usually fit wider tires on for winter or light dirt/gravel, can put a rack on it if you so desire

Benefit of a drop bar bike - more efficient, more hand positions, more powerful riding position

When you're in a more aggressive position (more bent over) you elongate your glute and allow it to do a bit more work in your pedal stroke, and you also push less wind. So not only are you more powerful, you are more efficient as well. This is good if you like to go faster. The multiple hand positions is great over longer rides, and it allows you to get your center of gravity lower when descending for more stability, which is nice when you're going fast down a hill. Also, if you want to ride with friends who own drop bar bikes, you'll be doing a lot more work to keep up with them if you have a flat bar bike.

For utilitarian, shorter distance stuff, a flat bar bike is probably the right call. For recreation, group, or longer distance stuff I'd go with a drop bar bike.

Helmets? What a bunch of dickcats.
You tell'em Rothlisberger.

Yeah, it's not like anyone ever gets a head injury, right?
:lmao:

Thought the joke was rather obvious. Although I am sort of against helmets. Kids are so insulated these days they don't seem to have to grasp the reality that pain is life and find themselves as hopeless adults. /getoffmylawn

Couple Sunday cocktails, Bob?

Cat question:

We all know that purring is the sound of a happy cat. And when they whip their tail every few seconds, there's a cat that's fixin to get pretty angry about something. But what the hell does it mean when they do both at the same time? My current cat does that all the time. Never saw that before in other cats.

Pls help. Will answer yours.

Brought the family to the Cards game last night to celebrate Cal's birthday. Other than the score, it was awesome. They didn't fight or say they were bored or ask to leave. As a matter of fact, Dyl seems to have his first love which was mine as well at his age. Baseball. It seems to be all he wants to do now and that, like Jesus, is alright with me.

I told Cal he could get all he could eat so he took me up on it. (Pic of Cal and me.) Man, this kid can eat. He wanted to start with cotton candy but I told him to eat something more nutritious, like a hot dog. Then he wanted to go get nachos. On his own. No worries, let him go. But then the cotton candy connection dried up. He spied them in the outfield and I was prepared to walk all the way around the stadium to get some. Hey a promise is a promise. When I notice a couple sneaking into the good seats and she had half a bags worth. Watch this I tell Cal. Go down a couple aisles her date/husband looked like WTF does this guy want and I offer her eight bucks for her stash. She says "are you serious" and I reply "you don't know how serious I am". I procure the cotton candy and everybody was happy. So much fun.

Then why is he wearing a soccer shirt?

I told him to put a red shirt on. He did. Mrs. SLB was pissed because he has a Card's shirt but wasn't wearing it. Nuts to her.

Also, played lasertag for the first time with the kids at the party. It was incredibly fun. :bag:

means they're both mad?

Tanner > good luck tonight!!
Thanks.

We won again (3 in a row). The other teams really don't like us. There were some actual booing going on when the M.C. introduced us as the reigning 2-time champs. And when we went up to get our trophies most of the crowd decided that was a good time to pack up and leave. :lmao:

Is that Fernando Rodney?
