GM's thread about nothing (22 Viewers)

GM sent me a really awesome message when I was going through my divorce. I wish I still had it. It was really encouraging. I'm going to paraphrase, because it might be helpful to some.

"The weather will seem better. Music will sound better. Food will taste good again. It may not seem like anything is ok right now, but it will get better, and you will be ok. You don't even have to believe that for it to be true."

It was a nice note. Thanks GB. You certainly were under no obligation to send it to me.
I like you.

I'll try to interject some good news. Got a sleu of folks coming over for the LSU/UGA game and then the Bama//ole Miss game tomorrow. Here's what I'll be cooking b/w today and tomorrow:

I love nothing more than awesome weather, opening up the windows, drinking some beers and cooking to a nice chill playlist. Am I getting old?
What is your red beans and rice recipe? I have a decent one but I think it could be a lot better.
It's very simple, but it's time consuming. It needs to be maintained (i.e. stirred for about 4 hours if you don't soak the beans overnight...a bit less if you soak them). B/c of this, I usually cook huge batches (adjust below for 4lbs of meat) at a time and freeze the rest. Extremely tasty, cheap meal

1 large white onion chopped

4-6 cloves of garlic chopped
3 stalks of celery chopped
1 pound red beans (washed)
1 pound bell pepper
1 pound andouille sausage (or ham) chopped
8 cups water or chicken stock
2 bay leaves

1. Fry sausage (ham) until it browns...remove and set aside
2. In pan grease, fry onions, bell pepper and celery...when onions go clear, add garlic and sausage
3. Stir frequently...don't let garlic turn brown
4. Add water and beans
5. Cook on med-low heat and stir frequently, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pan to prevent sticking
6. Cook for 4-6 hours, adding water every so often until you get the right consistency (you want everything to basically cook down and for thebeans to be mushy)
7. Remove bay leafs before serving

Just had this real weasly kid come up and tell me he doesn't feel well. Back when I was in the Navy during WW2 we called guys like this "goldbrickers". He never wants to do work and always has an excuse for why he's not doing something.

So he comes up and says "Can I go to the office? I don't feel well." I asked him what was wrong. He points to his side and says "I have a cramp." :eyeroll:

Whatever. If a kid says they don't feel well I send them up. Don't care.

But on the note for the office I wrote "OK to Office (cramps). 10:39 OPM". He didn't notice what it said. Hope the office staff got at least a chuckle.
I guess I now know why you told me to eat a #### after I spilled my guts here about my son possibly manifesting some anxiety as a physical ailment.
Yeah, no.

GDammit. THEY TOLD ME TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING 'CATCHY'. I HAD LIKE 2 MINUTES TO THINK ABOUT IT. I HATE YOU PEOPLE.
Do you have a digital copy of the actual commercial?
I don't even have a digital copy of the episodes I was on any more. :sadbanana:
Nice redacting job.

Well,

Nice! Love cooking this, though I've been doing it without sausage so my wife can enjoy it. But I want to cook a batch with some good cajun snausages.

You know why you soak them overnight? Reduces teh farts. Actually true.

Maybe I am missing something.

I have Spotify on the work computer. I can play virtually anything I want. I don't think I have a free trial of premium or anything. I type in an artist and an album and 99.99% of the time, I get a hit and it starts playing that album.* By the by, I think it's groovy.

But I have a Spotify app on my phone. Last night, whilst cutting the grass, I wanted to listen to Spotify on my phone the same way I do on my work computer. But when I typed in "My Bloody Valentine" + Loveless expecting the album to play, it said I had to have Premium to do that. The ####? It wasn't all lost as it played a "Radio Station" that had music similar to theirs and I very much enjoyed that. Pixes were on a few times. Echo and the Bunnymen. Was happy.

Anyhow...why do it play albums in full I like for my computer but not my phone?

*I have yet to type in "The Beatles"

Have to pay for premium to get full functionality on mobile version. It's worth the $10 a month to me since I can't install Spotify on my PC at work.

I was just pointing out that time had been taken to redact the name in two spots except for when it appears directly below the photograph.

yeah, you used to not even be able to listen to spotify on mobile at all without paying the $10/month. they changed it so you could still listen to radio, which is similar to pandora but they have a much bigger catalog.

Can I get Spotify Radio for my PC at work? Is that free?

Also, these guys are pretty smart. In between songs, they had an ad for Progresso where Flo raps about insurance and glosses herself more than once. These crafty mofos then follow it with a reminder that for $10 a month, you can avoid all future ads. What better way to get Gen X/Y/Z into a premium subscription than by forcing them to listen to Flo rap? Genius.

Self evaluations are teh suck. I mean, I know I'm awesome, but the form isn't really set up for that. I can get by in corporate-speak, but I swear it's worse than German.

So, I got a situation. Curious as to how others would handle it. My sister is a 50 year old loser. She was recently fired from her third minimum wage job this year. Because she can't manage her own life, she has to live with my 70 year old widowed mother. Also living there is my 13 year old nephew. Sister and nephew live rent free, and she is responsible for pay for her car, phone bill, and the water bill.

Total monthly bills equal approximately $500. She constantly fights with my mother, and is basically an unappreciative #####. This morning my nephew got in my mother's face after another fight between mom and sister, telling her he is not afraid of her. My sister did nothing about this, claiming he was protecting her. My mother has been saying for the past year she is going to throw them out, but hasn't done it obviously. What I want to do is throw my sister out on her ###, and beat the #### out of my nephew, but I'm pretty sure that's frowned upon nowadays.
My grandfather's wife's 50-year-old, 400-pound son lives with them and is a real peach. I looked into this a couple of years ago in case my grandfather were to try to throw him out, and in that state at least he had to treat him as a tenant with notice, etc. Sorry to go all lawyerly but there's a good chance she can't just kick them out. fish or Thorn or Leeroy Jenkins or someone else who actually knows about real estate law will be by with better advice.

If this is Alabama beating the #### out of the nephew is probably OK, though.
At least in my state, a person can't claim to be a tenant-at-will unless there has been an exchange of rent.
Thorn, please to clean out your inbox. TIA.

Summoning the collective knowledge of Jim Tan...

This isn't super important, but kind of a weird thing that came up today and I don't know the answer. Let's say you own a car that you leave in a rented storage unit. After a while you stop paying the monthly fee. Some time goes by and the owner of the storage unit follows all of the necessary procedures to auction off the car. The night before the auction you call the owner. The owner tells you that you can pay your past bill or the car is going up for auction as scheduled.

Here's the question: if you're the owner, can you refuse to pay the overdue bill and instead show up at the auction and bid on your own car? Essentially getting it for a fraction of the price and telling the storage unit owner to sue you for the rest?

I would assume the answer is yes, but I don't know for sure. In theory, the auction is unaffected by your presence, as the car certainly won't sell for less than it would otherwise and it's been otherwise publicized and is open to the public. I guess the only restriction on your participation, other than by law (which I doubt) would be in your contract with the storage company; again, I'd doubt that such a restriction exists however.
