Last day before Xmas break. Kids get out an hour early. Schedule is convoluted...8th period is 5th period, 4th period is 6th period...etc.

It's not even 1st period and these kids have totally lost their ####.

I think I'm going to start drinking on my prep which is 2nd period...which is actually 2nd period.
my kid had a half day today because it's private school and ####, why shouldn't we just inconvenience everyone that works by making every holiday just a little longer?

then it snowed like a quarter of an inch so they just went ahead and cancelled. guess all the soccer moms couldn't figure out how to get their escalades through those giant snowdrifts. working from home while my kid tries to scrape enough snow off the ground to build a midget snowman.

:lmao: We've had ONE snow day in my lifetime.

I stayed home and listened to the wireless.

it snows here like 4 days a year. seattle becomes a mess because of all the steep hills. at the first rumor of snow most people evacuate their offices and go home.

here in the 1950's town where I live, the city owns 1 plow, so if it snows more than an inch or so everything closes. two years ago the mayor declared a state of emergency because people couldn't reach essential services "like Target and Home Depot."

Mine will arrive sometime during the holiday season. (I assume, since I haven't sent it yet.)
Luckily for you Kwanzaa ends Jan 1
Chinese New Year is like in February, right?
Valentines Day is the Office end to the Holiday season. Unless you are Bogart - in that case:

IF ("Christmas Tree In Living Room" = True) THEN ("IT'S THE HOLIDAY SEASON); ELSE ("IT MUST BE AUGUST")
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Just to even things out, I didn't even put up the tree this year.

Other than getting a few gifts for my kids, I'm taking Christmas off.

My kid had a half day today AND yesterday. Public school.

Also had their Christmas program this morning. Apparently the dreaded and feared WAR ON CHRISTMAS!!11 isn't going all that well in here in Texas, as one of the featured songs was "Silent Night".

Now that I think about it, I pulled an SLB and forgot to put a note in my SS gift saying who it is. I also forgot to add this about a donation in his name. Sorry GB.
I never put a note in stuff I send to FBGs. What are we, a sewing circle?
Are you going to be able to drive down to Cambridge for cocktails over the holidays?
Did this get narrowed down to a day yet? It's definitely going to be a challenge for me. My boss has the week of Christmas off and I'm supposed to cover for him if anything NOXplodes.

They offered 15%? Counter at 85%. Thank them for the suggested discount number.
No.
:goodposting:

You go down slower than they come up unless you're aiming for a number around 50%, which is the delta between 15 and 85.

This is also why having a goal and a minimum limit you're willing to go for going in is a good idea, at least as preliminary numbers that might be subject to change.
Can't believe Pickles let this slide...

That's terrible.

Not the whole "religious song in a public school" thing but just having to listen to kids sing, period.

Want to know what the biggest scam out there is? Mall portrait studios.
No, wait until the kid gets older. Sports team pictures are the biggest racket.

Oh, you want a team picture and a couple pictures of your kid holding a soccer ball? That's 35 bucks please.

For only 8 bucks, we'll add a refrigerator magnet.

Oh, and we'll see you during your Spring season, too.
I think school pictures are worse. Especially since now they take them twice a year.

Just FYI since you were all wondering...there are TWO Bakersfield HS football teams playing for the state championship in their respective divisions tonight. Neither is my alma mater so it's not that cool.

Getting anxious about the forecast. We're supposed to get like 4-6" of rain tomorrow. We back up to a detention basin but it's never supposed to fill up.

We've had issues with our sump before with water seeping up through the floor. Our basement is an absolute mess right now, and a quarter inch of water would make my life a living hell right now.

Yeah, I quit signing up all sports teams for these the second I started coaching. We just don't show up or schedule them. Instead, my wife takes a team photo, which I print out and give to the kids in lieu of a trophy, which is another racket.

TAKE THAT HEATHENS!!!!

I'd like to compare the public schools of Beaverton with those of other FBGs. Because I have a deep suspicion that our public schools take more days off than any other public school system in the country. And I've probably done this before, but here's just the month of November, or as I like to call it, "The month they don't go to school".

November 8th - Staff Development Day. This was a Friday.

November 11th - Veterans Day. I wish they'd just be honest with us and tell us they want a 4-day weekend here.

November 27th-29th - Off for Thanksgiving. No issue here. Expected.

MONDAY DECEMBER 1st....YOU JUST HAD FIVE DAYS OFF! YOU REALLY NEED SOMETHING CALLED GRADING DAY???

Oh, and on December 9th, another month they don't go to school, they had "Budget Reduction Day". 7 Days off in one month's time. Right before the 2-week break. Is this normal? This can't be normal.

Our schools have off the Monday right after the 2 week break for some reason. So his next day of school is Jan 7th.

They also get the entire week of Thanksgiving, which is pretty nice tbh.

Not really normal.

We have Staff Development days but we just go half-days. The kids get out at noon and we "train" from 1-4.

No idea WTF a Grading Day is. Sounds like some sort of bull#### the local union weaseled in.

"Budget Reduction Day" is a fancy way of saying "furlough day" I guess. Is your district in financial trouble?

FTR in November: I had Veterans Day off, and 3 days for Thanksgiving

In December I'm off from this coming Monday until Jan 6. No other goofball days off.

You know why this is? Because there is a high rate of absenteeism on those days after holiday breaks.

Same thing for the day before.

Today is the day before Xmas break. On average I've probably got 2-3 kids absent ever class. Let's call it 2.5 absences per 33 kids. Today it is at least twice that. Last period I have 28 students on the roll sheet. 7 of them are not here today.

And the district loses money for absences, so you essentially reschedule the days on which you're most likely to have absent kids to areas of the calendar where that's less of a problem.

Interesting. We will be contributing to those stats next semester by leaving for Spring Break early.

omg us too

I might want to apply for a job there. Sounds like they get all kinds of extra days off.
Oh yeah....pension, dental, the works. That's why we have budget reduction days. Voters refused to raise taxes a couple years back to fund the pension gaps and rising healthcare premiums, so the school slashed teachers, cut days, got rid of PE, music...

Another vote came forth not long after and it was passed by voters who felt all the cuts were punitive and affecting children. But even though more money flowed, the budget reduction days remained. Odd business, that.

Anyhow, Beaverton is nice. You'd like it. We have a Grandy's.

:lmao:

Actually my district is pretty sweet to work for. We had a supernintendo for about 10 years that was a financial genius. While other districts were "pink slipping" and then rehiring teachers, having furlough days, etc we held fast. Over the last 3 years we've actually received a small bonus (maybe a couple of hundred bucks) each August because we cut waste/spending.

Back to chicken talk. Have any of you had Raising Cane's? They opened one here and it has become a running joke on the morning radio show I listen to on how bad it is.
started out as one place next to LSU that stayed open until 3AM so it got good run. for "fast food", it's all never frozen; so from that standpoint it's pretty good. Also, they pay they're employees more; so you're going to get a better overall "experience" than other fast food places.

chick fil a has better chicken, but I like Canes toast & fries better

Want to know what the biggest scam out there is? Mall portrait studios.

Now, before you start in with a :ptts: , please know that I am wholly against taking my child for these types of sittings (no offense to those of you who like doing this). My MIL takes my nephew once a month (and takes full advantage of the backdrops and props) and when my daughter was born, she gave us a gift card to JC Penney Portrait Studio. I've fought it until now, but I want to give both sets of grandparents a framed "professional" photo of her for Christmas, so yesterday I had Romo take her in to get some photos taken. Told him to inquire about getting a CD with the photos so that I could possibly get a Christmas card out.

He called and said that she did really well, and that they got something like 50 really great pictures of her. And, for them to put those pictures on a CD, it would be $150.00 $150.00. My blood just boiled - they took the pictures with a digital camera so it's as simple as drag and drop, no? Okay, I know it's not that simple, but still. Their next lowest package was something like picking out our 3 favorite pictures and getting those on a CD along with a couple of 8x10s and 5x7s - for the bargain price of $79.99.

Anyway, I did some Googling and found a $25 Groupon that got me the sitting fee ($9 per person), the two photo sheets (the 5 x 7s will take care of the framed grandparent photos) and our three favorite photos on CD. And, I have access to all of the photos via their online portal so I'm just going to print screen/crop all the photos. :boxing:

Just such a racket. I could have hired a friend to come to our house for $50 but I thought surely going through JC Penney I would be saving $$$.
Say what?

Please make sure you keep us updated on this kid as he grows up

ETA: hopefully that didn't come off dickish...b/c that wasn't the intent...but I think you know what I mean....AMIRITE?

Visited third hospital of the week tonight as ex's husband was readmitted. Kind of interesting the five of us all hanging out in the Emergency Room.

I've taken the kids back to their house, put them in bed, and waiting for ex to get home do I can leave.

It really hit my ex today that she doesn't have family or friends that will bail her out like I do. So that's something.
Last Sunday, the new husband and my daughter both woke up early to find the backdoor open and one of their three cats missing. The cat was 15 years old, and the new husband's favorite. For a mostly emotionless guy, it really broke him up. He was devastated. The kids put posters up around the neighborhood and scoured the streets for a couple of days, but to no avail. Cat de-clawed, never outside, it was toast.

So fast forward to last night, I'm still at the house, kids asleep, I have the front door open and screen shut waiting for the ex. The cat just shows up on the front porch like he ran an errand or something. It makes me chase him around the house, but finally gives up and I get him inside. Ex comes home, exhausted, and I mention, "Hey, I did something while you were gone." She gives me this WTF look like she didn't have time for my shenanigans, I point to the cat and she breaks down in my arms she is so happy.

I left with my "Greatest Ex-Husband My Ex Ever Had" trophy held high.
I rarely "like" a post*, but this one got one of the coveted likes. Good job, GB.
