GM's thread about nothing (31 Viewers)

btw- thanks again for the kind words/condolences about my friend... made a difference in a bleak day.

my wife astutely thinks that she was taking the trip to italy as a last hurrah, with advance knowledge that it was terminal, a narrative that I prefer to the version I had in my head yesterday.... that she "only" had non-terminal breast cancer, so decided to still take this trip with family and surprisingly got hit with an aneurysm or something else related to the cancer to the shock of her husband and daughter.

This was more the version that happened to my dad- although he and my mom knew he was terminal (pancreatic), they hadn't shared it with my brother and me yet... trying to get through the holidays first, and ideally to make it to the birth of my son in June (my first kid, his first grandson). He died on christmas eve from an aneurysm a week after getting diagnosed. I got the message just as I got off the plane at Dulles to spend christmas with my inlaws. Had no idea he was even sick. Worst moment of my life.

I can only hope that my friend and daughter at least had a bit of time to process all of it with her before she went. ####. it all sucks, advanced knowledge or none.

Getting real tired of seeing people on Facebook dump water on their head to cure diseases.
All my likes!

I don't understand the concept. I challenge you to donate to charity or dump water on your head. Why not just donate, jerks? Oh, but then you wouldn't get to make a spectacle of yourself.

Speaking of donations, thanks to those who PM'd, but let's just forget the whole thing. I've soured on the idea now.
neat board, imo

So one of my coworkers just showed me and my boss one of the best worst videos of all time. A guy on our engineering team was taking a dump on the 8th floor and had his phone out surfing he internet. Guy comes in to the stall next to him and starts grunting like he's wrestling an alligator. Engineer starts recording because the noises are hilarious....only the guy isn't taking a dump. You got it - he's brought his crock pot to the bathroom and the shadow reflection under the stall is captured and now on YouTube. Don't know whether to laugh or be very very afraid.
Wait....what?
There's a video with accompanying soundtrack on youtube of the shadow of someone in his office building throwin' a jerk.
linky?

They usually do both. But it's still all about making a show of donating.
Exactly. Just donate quietly.
Totally agree. Don't understand the need for constant recognition of giving/civic participation.

Oooof, sorry you went through that. I don't even want to try and imagine what that was like for you.

I've lost two very good friends to cancer far too young over the last 10 years, not to mention two very loved family dogs that didn't even see a 4th birthday. Even when you see the end coming from a long way out, it hurts so much before and after. I hope before I die that we find a cure for all cancer. I don't care if we land on Mars or invent a car that flies...let's cure cancer.

I kept reading "Austin" as "Autism". Anyhoo, thank you for your service Rain Man.

Officerette Petra Malloy (wife, not daughter) had an interview today for the general management spot at her store. Pretty crazy since she's only been with the company for like 3 months. Haven't heard from her today but I'm sure I'll find out how it went when she gets home.

Oh and I got a pep talk from a member of the 1994 Nation Champion Cornhuskers today. So I got that going for me...which is nice.
You guys weren't even close

To be fair he's not exactly Tommy Frazier. I'd never heard of the guy until last school year when he came to speak to our student body.
I think I may have mentioned earlier that I got to go to the HOF Gold Jacket a Dinner a couple of weeks ago. HOFer Billy Shaw sat down at my table for a bit. I felt like a total horse's ### because I had no clue who he was, even after he mentioned that he was a Buffalo Bill (as I was sitting there with a Bills hat on. Literally the only person in the building uncouth enough to be wearing a hat).

On the plus side, he was very nice and I made it into the background of a few iconic shots of Jim Kelly hugging Andre Reed as well as the NFLN's coverage of the event.

So on summary, I also have no idea who that Cornhuskers guy is.

GD, any update on Bailey?
Yes/no. She seemed a lot better yesterday. Enough that my wife refused to take her to the vet. She has been fine most of today but then had an episode where her legs just didn't seem to work and she was dragging herself across the floor. I think my wife is in denial (me too a bit). Probably going to have to force the issue and get her in to the vet tomorrow.

My problem with the Challenge is that it's usually presented as "dump ice water over your head OR you have to donate $100".

That seems like crap to me. How about just "I challenge you to dump ice water over your head AND make a donation"?

It makes it seem like blackmail or like donating to a worthy cause is some sort of punishment.

I'm all for raising awareness for a good cause, but phrasing matters IMO.

Public apology to shuke for being cranky with him. He's such a good dude.

Public thanks to Rude for hooking me up with better PMing options. :excited:

Do cops have RL SCMODS these days? I mean, if a friend of mine got a warning in one county (with paperwork), can the cop who pulled him over in the next county a few days (or even, oh say, a few hours) later see that a warning was issued elsewhere?

I know many of you never venture outside this threat, so I'm stealing this and posting it in here because frankly it seems like it belongs and should be dissected and discussed.

Many internet web sites like to rank the fruits. You can see right away that these rankings are wrong and bad, both because their results are stupid, and for the reason those results are stupid, which is that they were assembled using a lousy-### amateurish methodology. Amateur bush-league-### fruit-rankers are wronger than hell, basically.
Here at Deadspin, we have avoided the pitfalls inherent to ranking the fruits according to the bad fruit opinions of one rando dingus. We've deployed science to create a correct ranking of fruits, based on the collected and analyzed fruit judgments of many rando dinguses. It's a sophisticated polling methodology, but in layperson's terms, we created a "spreadsheet" with "a bunch" of fruits "listed" on it, and then everybody "assigned" a "numerical value" between 1 and 10 to each "entry" on the "list," and we used the "spreadsheet's" built-in "math" "function" to "calculate" the "average" "score" of each fruit.

We didn't include things that are fruit in the, like, horticultural or botanical sense or whatever, but that tend not to be eaten in a fruit-like manner (tomato, avocado, coconut, peppers, etc.). And we didn't include obscure-### bull#### like horned melons and so forth, because there's only so much time in the day for fruit-ranking and those things weren't gonna win anyway.

But enough of that ####. Here, below, are the correct fruit rankings.

The Correct Fruit Rankings1. Pineapple (9.423)

2. Strawberry (7.7)

cantaloupe should be below getting hit by a car. I'd go Ebola--->Cantaloupe---> Tim
Agreed, other than the tim part.

Just noticed that not only is pineapple #1, it is by a huge margin. I like pineapple a lot, but it doesn't deserve that kind of lead over everything else.

I think pink lady has been snubbed big time in apple rankings.

They would make a fine #4 choice.
