It's like my wife's boss. Says he's never had a sip of alcohol. I look at him like a dog hearing a high pitched noise when he talks about it

That's not even in the same league as not trying ketchup

The Mormon guy who used to work next door to me has never had a sip of alcohol. I don't think any of his 4 wives or 17 kids have either.

I need a vacation and am considering a locale where the only option is to do it by boat. I've studiously avoided cruises in my life, so am not sure what I should know about choosing a boat, cabin, etc. Thoughts?

I'll hold off on my Sun Chips opinion for now.
Galapagos Islands ftw. Smaller cruise ships (like 1-2 dozen), adventure trip, amazingly beautiful, historically important and you can do a day or two in Quito which is fun as well.
Our posts crossed. Yes, Galapagos is why I'm sucking it up and getting on a boat for a week or more. Specific recommendations?
I can give you some, yes. Will need some time to pull up info but I did my honeymoon in the Galapagos
:thanks: Awesome. Our selections might be more limited as I want to go in November and am just starting to plan, but any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated. I was looking at Nat Geo because it's a great company, but their boats are big (like 95 people).
If this is your first time on a boat etc, the best advice on a boat that size is to get a cabin with a window (it also helps if the window can open). A lot of people freak out (get seasick) without being able to see the horizon, etc.

isn't guru the guy who started all this when he told us a long time ago that he's never even tried ketchup?

:lmao: wtf orders a three course breakfast?? and I love me some cosjobs, but toast is certainly not mandatory with any egg dish. Tortillas >>> toast. A fresh bagel is about the only thing preferable to a tortilla. I have a pretty simple rule. If you need to add a condiment to it to eat it, it's probably because it taste like ####. waffles and pancakes suck, plain and simple. You don't need to add anything to an egg to eat it. I haven't had syrup in probably 15+ years, maybe more. I've never had ketchup in my life. Mustard and a light mayo are about the only condiments I'd consider on a sandwich.
hmmm....so the guy who doesn't like to read about other people's taste in foods still felt the need to tell us that "tortillas >>> toast", that waffles and pancakes suck, and he's never had ketchup in his life.

odd indeed.
Picklesesque notebook

You people love to argue about food.

You realize that people have different tastes, right?

It's kind of like hearing nails on a chalkboard when people try to convince other people that cantaloupe is good or bad or sun chips are good or bad. If someone has tried something and didn't like it, you saying "YOU'RE WRONG ITS GOOD" does about as much good as slamming your #### into a door.

Probably should start entering the Timchochet political threads, imho - your talents are wasted here.
YOUR FACE IS A DOOR! CAN I SLAM MY #### IN THAT?!?!?

Thanks. I haven't slept on a boat before, yes.

It seems like the higher-up cabins are the most expensive (when I was looking at the Nat Geo boat with three levels), but I assume those would also have the most rocking around and possible seasickness. I can sometimes get mildly seasick but Dramamine has always taken care of it for me. A smaller boat seems nice but then again will also cause more seasickness than a larger one. They limit the boats in Galapagos to 100 passengers at most so it's not like even the big ones are that big.

but the big tub of Sabra hummus is worth buying twice. Also Tillamook Cheese, both varieties.
Hummus is so simple to make and a can of chickpeas can be had for like a buck. I'll never go back to store-bought hummus.
Tahini isn't that cheap though, is it? Either way, that Sabra hummus at Costco is not expensive either and saves a lot of effort.

My wife has done a couple phone interviews with a company and now they want her to go to Boston for a final interview. The (3rd party) recruiter is asking her to front the cost of the hotel and car rental. That's weird, right? We're talking regional director level position. Has anyone been flown for an interview and had to pay for any of the costs, reimbursed or not?

No, it's not weird. Will vary firm to firm, obviously, but Big Four accounting firms reimburse before the candidate leaves. They don't pay for it upfront.

Never stepped foot in a Costco but they're building one less than a block away from me next year. Can't wait to scavenge those dumpsters every night.

I use about a tablespoon of sesame oil instead of the tahini.

I think it's not that uncommon to have people pay up front and get reimbursed for those types of expenses.
interesting. neither of us had ever heard of or experienced it before. others she asked hadn't either. even the person she spoke with at the hiring company said she'd never heard of a recruiter doing that.

I've had it happen many times, at very large companies. Some people even prefer it because you can get the miles or cash back or whatever using your own card, then get reimbursed.

Geez, I'm not taking this tour:

I highly recommend this trip but don't expect the food to be anything special. It was very average at best. You won't go hungry as there is plenty of food and snakes are provided twice a day following morning and afternoon activities.

Good talk, guys.
:lmao:

Like these guys said, give him the option to do something else. But there has to be something else.
I took my sons to a free karate class of some sort about 6-7 years ago. The instructor was a little....intense. We did not enroll, nor go back. I always found martial arts guy to be a bit....off. And I'm not quite sure I understand their absolute need to sign the kid up for a full year like some sort of fly by night gym.

But if Shuke son loves it, do it. If he's ambivalent about it, take the season off. He can always go back to it if he misses it. Also, to the extent his lessons are yet another inconvenience to a life that is hectic right now, perhaps this is the right time to pare back on things like karate. Take a little stress off, Shuke.

This isn't for Vector/Cutco knives is it?

Only for cheap ### public agencies and I only did it once for a job in Vegas which I accepted and then turned down when I was offered a better one in Tampa. Another one I was asked to travel to because they liked me in the phone interview, but wanted me to go in front of the stupid city board and it was going to be a popularity contest because none of these idiots know what I do.

At the level you are talking about, I would be cautious at least and maybe ask for some sort or contract to ensure reimbursement after travel. Seems weird to me.

It's actually the opposite. The upper cabins generally have more light, more airflow (windows probably open_, and are generally bigger for boats that size. You're thinking more about a sailboat where all the cabins are sort of the same (in a sailboat the front is usually preferred).

If you are going to go to all that trouble, you may as well buy dried garbanzos and cook them yourself. It will slice the cost in half and the taste is superior. Just soak them overnight then boil them the next day, Easy.

Any other Costco suggestions? We just became members (actually seriously true)/I want to ruin this thread for good.
The Carne Asada is very good. They tried to replace it with the Guy Fieri crap for a while but brought the good stuff back. Yellow package.

The pizzas are good, of course, although they don't do the Caprese pizza as much as they used to. Up here they have a great selection of Tillamook cheese including the awesome white aged reserve cheddar. I would think they might still have that in NorCal. Good deals on Salmon up here as well. The prepared one with the pesto butter is very tasty. Good deal on the Z-bars (Cliff bars for kids) if you're into that type of thing as well as the Diamond Smokehouse Almonds.

And I'm done.
I only go once a year at most as I just can't stand the crowds and the poor shopping cart management that slows the shopping process to a painful crawl, but when I do go, I can't escape without a giant bucket of jelly beans. A large weakness of mine which sucks, because Reagan ate the hell out of some jelly beans and didn't get nearly as fat as I am. Course, I'm guessing he didn't like the boozes much.

Good Afternoon All,

My new digs overlook the 1/4 mile track and I can see the garden in the distance. Last week I was moved to a new building. This will likely be by residence until I depart. Day 190

Here are some the the lastest stories from afar:

12 Pound Soup

Cooking here is something that many do and few do well (myself included in the latter). Several folks will pool their resources and come up with culinary delights seldom seen outside these walls. Everything from Burritos, pizzas, stromboli and various soups. All with a sole cooking utility.....the microwave!

A few days ago a "chef" prepared tortilla soup for his group. One such group participant we'll call "Hank" to protect his identity contributed his share of ingredients with great anticpation. The Chef busted out his culinary wizardy and made his brew. I had not seen this concoction befor and waited to see the finished product ( I was not a contributor and therefore not a participant). As the soup was served it looked amazing. The bowls had a nice layer of shredded cheese melter to perfection over ortillas and chips. It reminded me of a french onion soupl all of the participatnctes slurped up the mix and seemed to enjoy the grub.

Later in the day, Hank who is weighs in at 350 plus slowly turned green and then a yellowish shade of pale. This man is large by any measuring stick and was seen repeatedly making a mad dash to the restroom. I live right by him so I was forced to witness the utter shock, eyebrowns raised and whites of eyes glaring when the moment presented itself. This sequence of events always resulted in "The Dash". I felt genuinely sorry for Hank. After each successive trip down the hall, Hanks skin color was getting more pale....ooo did I mention Hank is from south of the boarder? Yeah...even more impressive! After two days of "The Dash" and have zero intake of food or water, Hank was finally returning to the gregarious Hank we all know and love. Unfortunately his love for the chef had waned. As a joke the chef came over and asked Hank if we would like to finish the remaining soup. Hank came unglued....Here is what I heard:

Chef: Hank, wanna fish up the rest of the soup?

Hank: Look here you m..........r. I have lost 12 pounds in 2 days and my ### feels like a windsock. Get that sh.. away from me.

Chef: I will make you something good to eat.

Hank: The hell you will. Go cook for Jenny Craig's accelerated weight loss program.

And that my friends is the tale of "The 12 pound Soup"

THE BAILING BARBER

Its 3:00am and over the intercom I hear, " Emergency Count". Everyday the folks here come around and manually count everyone to insure that no one has quit and left the village. The counts happen 3-4 times at night and I have never experienced being woke up for an emergency count before.

I slip on my sunglass's as early morning bright lights and my baby blues do not go hand in hand. As I sport this unique look, the guys I live with have asked me several times if I am hungover. I guess I look awesome with shades in the early morning while parading around with "rats nest" hair.

Back to the story.......Everyone is a little miffed at having to wake up and stand there while the guards come around and being to take inventory of us. I look across the hall and see that one guy is still in bed. He is a young guy who always seems to be getting his beauty sleep but something seems odd that he would not wake up given the commands through the loudspeaker and the bright lights. Just about the time I notice that he is still under the covers the guards come in with a book that has our pictures and one by one they are making sure that we are all accounted for. When they get over to the sleeping guy the guards yells, "count time, get up". No such luck..this guy is sleeping hard. The guard then rips off the covers and an arm sways from the edge of the bed. As I watch this event unfold, I gasp and say wholly ####. The guard now stands over this mans bed and is now looking at a near perfect dummy. We are all standing there is disbelief. The man had decided to quit and leave the camp. At this point, the radios that the guards wear are going bezerk and a female guard shows up momentarily. She inspects the "dummy" and says "wow. this ones is good. Too bad the other guy did not do as good of a job or we would have probably missed this until morning"....Other guy! This dude had partner who slipped out the back door with him...

I was simply not prepared for this...I had no idea anyone would be so bold to bail. The consequences are too high. I guess with you speak Spanish, have a long sentence and have ties to foreign countries the enticement to "move on" is greater.

No word on the capture of these guys..

I have switched workout partners and I now spend an hour and a half with 3 guys who could each bench press a prius! Why the accepted me into their group? I guess they think they can build muscles on a stick man...o well....what the heck...Its not like I have a busy schedule...I workout out Monday through Friday for an hour and forty five minutes and then come back and make my "Sheridan Shake"....my creation of Peanut butter, powdered milk, chocolate powder and a touch of freeze dried coffee....I mix this with about 6 ounces of water to dissolve the ingredients and then pour ice over the top.....ahhhh....the most delicious protein shake. My concoction is catching on....Patent Pending!

Don't do a big boat in the Galapagos. The excursions will suck. Part of the enchantment is walking around these uninhabited islands with only a handful of people. Doing so with a hundred would not be fun.

You should look at multi-hull (Catamaran) yachts. They are more stable than single hull

I know we buy things there besides booze, but my wife must do that.

Ponzi pinot noir at $18 is a good bottle if you like teh wines.

Of course, then you have to buy 5 bottles for 5 of your friends [/fatguy]
Is Ponzi's "Evolution" white blend available everywhere down there? I know you don't do white, but am unsure how far they distribute.

ETA: Nevermind...that's a Sokol Blosser wine. :bag:

Besides the tilapia I mentioned, the 5 pound bag of Hoody's peanuts for around 6 bucks is awesome. They have a pre-cooked mozzarella/garlic/artichoke chicken sausage that's fantastic in a pinch (add to pasta or do whatever) and SPEAKING OF PASTA!@#$ You can get a crapload of organic whole wheat pasta that's very good and I like the bigass bags of San Francisco coffee beans and they used to have these dental chews for my dogs that weren't made next to a chemical plant by infants in China but they stopped carrying them and I second the roto chicken that was mentioned and the pizza really is pretty good but I'm trying not to be a pile of goo anymore and their Kirkland vodka is good but I stopped drinking and also mouthwash.
