GM's thread about nothing (40 Viewers)

Signed for Fanduel. Now what? Wait for the riches? Anybody doing this? Is this like the time I discovered the greatness of The Pixies 35 years after they recorded their first single?

Again, no commute today, but I'm unable to escape Frosty and his Holdenites, as a facebook friend just posted this as her status

I've got a wedding in Waukesha Wisconsin today. Took a day off work for an early afternoon wedding with no booze. 2 hr drive each way. Stoooooooooopid.
No booze? In Wisconsin?

Where ya going to be, there has to be a bar close by that you can run to for a few

I don't know enough about soft shell crab to know if I'm getting it with or without the shell, but I love soft shell crab sandwiches regardless.

My legs are still sore from Tuesday. That line from Seinfeld during the Summer of George episode about muscles being in a state of atrophy certainly applies to my life this week. At least I could sit on the toilet this morning without it being an adventure, unlike yesterday.

I gained 4 pounds since Monday. Until further notice, I'm going to assume I'm packing on muscle.

Fact: a spider roll is the best sushi roll.
super bad boy roll at Japonessa is pretty awesome.
Will have to try that. I just meant in terms of the standard rolls you see on all menus. I've had specialty ones that I liked better. And also I was just trying to get on Thorn's "bad" list (though I do love me a spider roll).
When I first started getting sushi, I thought spider rolls were great. I have since moved on.

The best sushi place near me has one called a kamikaze roll, and I doubt it's special to them, but it's a spicy tuna roll wrapped with yellow tail. It's my favorite now, or at least it replaced the just spicy tuna roll part of my standard order.

Yeah, a kamikaze is a standard roll.

You're getting soft-shell crab with the shell, by the way. I don't think they're even served without the shell.

That's what I thought on the second point.

I haven't been eating much sushi these days besides that one place every month or so. I thought it may be. Thanks.

I'm still too afraid to try sushi. I know it's stupid. Look, I'd rather not talk about it, ok?
Start with the cooked stuff and then the easier rolls--stuff like spicy tuna, etc. Things like tuna are usually served so rare that going from that to raw isn't a big step. Just ease your way in. Before you know it, you'll be eating the live shrimp.

No, I think I was wrong. I just googled because I realized what you described was not what I thought a kamikaze was, and I'm not sure there's a standard definition. Yours sounds awesome, though. I'm not really a roll person mostly, but yellowtail is my favorite sashimi and I do love spicy tuna. :swoon:

If you're looking to order it, I think they put masago on the outside as well. For me, it's everything I like all in one. No need to order just the spicy tuna or the yellowtail nigiri or sashimi.

I'm making duck tonight, or else I'd be eating sushi for sure. Maybe Sunday, I guess.

You could probably get some crab for free from Zooks.

With dishwasher talk a few days back it got me to thinking and I could really use a decent set of knives/steak knives.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good set of knives? I don't need chef quality here, and I have children/teens, so I would love to get a set less than 400-500 bucks that are decent. Assist?

:thanks:
I just bought some of these. We have had some Henckels for years and they are still sharp but somehow we've lost 3 of the 8 we originally bought. HTF does that happen? :oldunsure:
Start hiding knives?
Stop hiding knives when you are drunk or high. I probably could have just said "Stop hiding knives"

Back to School Night at the middle school here was 2.5 hours long. No kids allowed, just parents. If the children of some of the non-stop stupid question asking parents are half as obnoxious and dim-witted as their makers, then I sincerely feel sorry for middle school teachers, think they are underpaid and understand why Tanner is so grumpy from Sept to June.
They are. You're welcome.
So we went from class to class to class, meeting ALL the teachers (including PE) throughout the arduous night and while I really enjoyed getting to know the teachers (and liked most of them quite a bit), I was ready to cooter kick a few of the moms that just wouldn't stop raising their hands and asking inane question after inane question. But the peace de la resistance came at the end of the night in our son's drama class, taught by a bubbly woman who no doubt smoked a bowl before coming to school and fit every stereotype of every drama teacher in every middle school across this great land. This woman was so nice that you would have to wear an "I HATE DRAMA CLASS" t-shirt every day to get anything less than a "B". But that didn't stop the woman in the back row with hooker boots and 10 pounds of make-up from raising her hand and asking how much homework her little Willow would be getting in drama. Homework? In drama? The nice teacher smiled and hesitated short of saying that there wouldn't be any homework at all during the year, but that there would be very very little. Then she explained the grading system for drama, which basically sounded like if you just showed up and smiled, you'd do fine. Same mom raises her hand again and asks "Well, how will we be able to track her success in your classroom?" :hot: :hot:

At that point, I whipped my head around and just looked at her slack jawed. You really need to helicopter parent your child so much that you need to track their success in drama??? I told my wife that if she asked the same question to the PE teachers that I would whip a dodge ball at her husband.

Tanner, your job? It ain't easy, brother. And it ain't because of the kids.

But he does get three months of vacation.

I used to think you were cool.
JESUS PEOPLE COULD YOU JUST GET WITH THE PROGRAM?!? I'M TRYING TO MAKE THORN MAD. WHY DO I HAVE TO SPELL IT ALL OUT FOR YOU PEOPLE?
You don't have to yell. I'm right here.
Oh, there you are. Sorry, didn't see you.

Can't help with your crab question, by the way. Don't really see blue crab out this way so much, what with all the delicious fresh dungeness and the like.

You do a lot of cooking? I ask because you really only need a few knives. A good chef/santoku, something to chop veggies with, a paring knife, and a filet/yanagiba.

If you're just looking for something decent, you may not believe me but these are really a decent starter set. They look good, hold an edge well, and you can put them on a magnetic strip on the wall. They're my "backup" knives, when I'm cooking multiple things.

This is my chef knife. It's my favorite knife I've ever used. I use it for everything. I use it to break down a duck into component parts, butcher an entire strip loin into NY strip steaks, slice tomatoes, whatever.

Then figure out if you want a filet or a yanagiba knife and grab an inexpensive but well rated one of those, and you have everything you need.
"Oh, these knives!"

I live in Florida. Apparently if you go to Publix you can just walk right out with it.

Fresh crab meat is expensive as hell, even on the coast.
Kinda depends. If you are buying it lumped (cracked for you), then yes, you are right. But you can buy fresh dungeness crab up here whole for not too much money....you just have to do the work. I can get Alaskan crab legs for $8.99 a pound, but they are pre-cooked and previously frozen. But, that doesn't bother me as they thaw out easy and grill up really nice.

But yeah, if I go to Whole Foods up here and buy a small container of lumped crab meat, it's going to cost a lot, even if it was caught a Salt Lick away from me.

Thanks Henry Ford.

We do a lot of cooking at home yes. I mention steak knives, but we don't actually eat steak (red meat) at all - but tons of fish and poultry for sure.

We bought one of those steak knife blocks years ago, and while it sufficed, blades are super dull. Bought a knife sharpener which helped a bit, but would love to have something decent that stays sharp.

Thanks again (and StLouis Bob too!)
Do you cook together? When my wife and I cook together, I use the Global and she uses the small santoku from the set I linked. It's really nice for small hands.

If you do a lot of fish (and fillet it yourself) I'd invest in a decent yanagiba knife. It's the japanese version of a fillet knife (a sushi knife) traditionally only sharpened on one side like a razor blade. It's not as flexible of a blade as a western fillet knife, but it makes filleting and portioning fish really easy.
i have henkels. 6" chefs knife and a 7" santoku hollow blade we also have a small serrated blade that my wife uses a lot
