I just looked at flights--most likely would be 4/1-4/5 or 4/3-4/7. Or something like that. Not sure where we'll stay. We don't need fine dining, but we might end up on the Strip just for hotel choices, though. I will book stuff tomorrow; too tipsy now. We tried a new spot tonight where they liked us...i.e., big pours.

INLet me know where you're staying. I'm more of a strip hotel kind of guy, but I may need rides since I drink like the common trash downtown.

Haven't thought about where to stay yet, but downtown seems unlikely. It's been about 11 years since I have been there. Up for suggestions/deals. TIA

In an unrelated story, I was considering going back and judging the one category in the timdraft® that didn't finish.

Wasn't it a movie category? Might have even been the movie draft itself? That would be great shtick. M Do it.

I got my stereo all wired up and back to tlife.

Now I'm starting to open up the boxes and boxes and boxes of LPs I've been carting around, unopened for at least 15 years.

First handful:

Pure Prairie League - mint condition, medicore to bad music.

Shaft Soundtrack - nice

Saturday NIght Fever soundtrack - I was pretty much anti-disco when working at Evolution Records in Huntsville when this LP came out and was the number one best seller for months. I'd drive to Houston and pick up a few cases of it and about six cases of everything else in the whole store.

Doobie Brothers - Toulouse Street- always liked them, never remember buying one of the LPs, since everyone else was always one.

Ramsey Lewis - Routes - no memory, but I think I like him

Styx Crystal Balls - no idea

Hugo and Luigi Chorus with Brass - no idea

Not shtick. I wouldn't even call point break a guilty pleasure. It v was all pleasure, no guilt. And true story, many years ago I took a girl home on a second date, we rented and watched the matrix together for the first time. Totally blew my mind. we fooled around afterwards and then i watched it again while she slept. One of my all time favorites. The movie, not the girl, although she was cool too.

the scene where she changes from swimsuit to jorts was awesome back when I first watched it. It hasn't aged well, and neither has she, but #### it, neither have i.

I loved that movie where he played the Australian European African American in Asia defending the ocean floor from aliens using giant robots. Great use of his acting talent.

I saw The Matrix at the theater with a couple buddies for the first time and it blew my mind. Then I took my girlfriend back to see it a couple days later and she was underwhelmed. Should have left her right there but I ended up marrying her instead.

Aside from Point Break being a total goat-f uck of a movie...her is another reason to hate it.

In 1984 Kem Nunn published a novel called Tapping the Source. Tapping the Source would be the first in a loosely defined surf trilogy that Nunn would publish in the creation of his own sub-genre, surf noir. Parts of the history of this novel are notorious for all the wrong reasons. It seems that Hollywood was interested in Tapping the Source and the rights were bought. Over the years this project would change hands numerous times. It would be taken off the shelf and tinkered with only to be put back on the shelf again until the next round of interest. Then one day the deformed and practically altered beyond all recognition Tapping the Sourceproject gained traction and was eventually filmed…as Point Break.

Alls well that ends well and Nunn’s book finally made it to the screen. Yay! Except the project had been in the pipeline for so long and had been changed so much that Nunn’s work was never credited as the inspiration for the film and Nunn apparently wasn’t paid anything. Hell the movie only has the faintest trace of the book. There is some speculation that a law suit was filed and some sort of deal was reached. I can’t say this for certain because there just isn’t a lot of on the record information in general about the Tapping the Source toPoint Break debacle.

To this day most don’t realize that the book inspired the movie. It’s common place for reviews of one to reference the other and vice versa. I’ve seen a number of reviews ofTapping the Source that say something to the effect of “pretty good but too much like Point Break”.

This is sad really because Tapping the Source is one hell of a novel and Nunn is a great writer. Nunn isn’t the most prolific fella in the world with only 5 novels to his name after all these years but every few years one pops us. For me, often times, the best books sit at the intersection of great writing, great characters and a great story. Tapping the Source is right there in that sweet spot.

Point break was such a ground breaking movie that is become clichéd from people cloying it so much. Awesome bank robbery scene at the beginning? like the town, batman tdk, and a million others. character study of the bad guys before you find out they're bad guys? A Hollywood staple these days. Guy who goes undercover in a subculture and begins to like it, then apps it and becomes best bros with the guy he had to take down? Everything from goodfellas to the departed, or those race car movies, and countless others follow that formula.

It's the Shakespeare of the buddy cop genre.
