GnR : Appetite For Destruction (1 Viewer)

I never really had a mullet nor wore the "uniform." I had lots of concert tees, but not the spiked denim or leather jackets, etc. I had hair that was kind of long and shaggy all around. Think Randall "Pink" Floyd in "Dazed and Confused."

All my poison, warrant, gnr, skid row, damn Yankees, etc t shirts are still at my parents house.

Nice. My collection skewed heavier - Metallica, Maiden, Ozzy, Anthrax, Motorhead, King Diamond, etc. My kid brother actually still has a couple of them he uses for Halloween costumes (I was about 5'9" and 110 lbs when I was 15, so they're pretty small.)

Want.
I think the prize of the lot is the skid row shirt that says "Eat""####""Kill"And that's it. Pretty awesome.

Can we get a mullet count among posters in this thread?
:bag: Though not for long. My punk buddies humiliated it right off my head.
I'm not ashamed. My 9th grade mullet was AWESOME. Righteous part with excellent feathering on the sides and top, shoulder length and a bit wavy in back. So sweet.
:hifive:
My 9th grade school picture was me in my best, freshly washed and hair-sprayed mullet (prep time approx 30 mins), my freshest Ocean Pacific t-shirt and an Iron Maiden Killers pendant.I didn't just listen to the music, bra. I lived the life. :takesdragfromcig:
You and me both, brother. I had zebra striped shirts, spiked wristbands, and zipper pants :bag:
HHHWWWHHHOOOOAAAHHHH..... Hardcore. :tebow: :headbang:
It's funny. Most people that were into metal in the early 80s had clothes they don't want to admit to owning. For example, Slayer can't be proud of this pic.Kind of like rappers who pretend they never wore breakdance clothes.
mustaine loved giving it to the guys in slayer because they wore "makeup"

This from the guy that recorded a hair metal version of Anarchy in the UK.

wasnt that motley crue?you wanna see some funny stuff look at old pictures of pantera before they changed their sound

Does anyone else think the album as a whole is pretty average?
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
If I were in my late 30's or 40's I think I may feel differently , but having grown up after this album hit and just listening to it...very, very average. Intro is obviously one of the best...Paradise City and Sweet Child have stood the test of time...the only other song I could even name off the top of my head is Mr. Brownstone. Had to look up the rest. Looking at it, I see a lot of filler. When I think great albums I think of ones that I listen to cover to cover and don't even consider hitting the next button. I'm reaching for the next button throughout this album.
Night Train, My Michelle, You're Crazy, Rocket Queen. Those songs are awesome. The only song I really dislike on the album is Welcome to the Jungle. Didn't like it then and now that it's been played to death it's even tougher to hear. Night Train may be my favorite track on the album. Wake up late and honey put on your clothes and take your credit caaaard to the liquor store

Jungle and Sweet Child are without a doubt two of the best rock songs of all time, those are the highlights, and there are no other real weaknesses on the album. That said, there are certainly better albums after. Not to take away from it, it is a great album and stands up to the test of time, but there are some genius albums out there from the past 20 years or so. Radiohead - OK ComputerRadiohead - Kid APavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked RainU2 - Achtung BabyNirvana - NevermindMaybe even a couple more if I thought about it longer.

Rage Against the Machine - self titled
Love me some Rage. Recently started a Rage thread actually (last week) and was listening to this very album. That said.. I don't see it. I love Rage but I really have to be in the mood for them. DeLa Rocha is a bit repetitive at times and the songs as a whole sorta blur together in spots. Dunno... if it was an easy call I wouldn't have started the thread. :hot:
I feel "Battle of Los Angeles" was their best album and could compete with Appetite. I still feel AFD wins that battle but closer than the RATM self titled.

I'm not sure I'd call any of those albums pure "Rock and Roll" Albums...And I'm a HUGE Radiohead fan.... but they're more Progressive/Art Rock than the "Rock & Roll" (booze addled falling apart at the teams on a collision course rock and roll)

Dude when I listen to AFD now, I skip sweet child and Paradise city.the rest of the album is what makes it great: my michelle, rocket queen, it's so easy, nighttrain, mr brownstone, all awesome
I always skip it's so easy and night train. No issue with the other two, don't always skip them, but don't seek them out either.

It's So easy is my favorite song from the album.

Hey, it's music, we all have different tastes. I am sure if I were ten years older I would look at this album differently. I didn't grow up with appetite, I listened to it later. It's alright, but special? I don't think so.

Sort of like "the wall" and "Abby road" then?

With the advantage of hindsight, I listened to a lot of mediocre music growing up. Lots of good stuff has stood the test of time though.

:goodposting: Nothing wrong with Radiohead but it's not 'rock' in the sense most of us think of it. U2 is one of my favorite bands and I'd never call them rock either. Nevermind is a great album but not better than Appetite.

guys stop with that radiohead crap. UGH
:goodposting: Radiohead fills its niche well and is adored by its fans. But come on people. We might as well call INXS one of the greatest bands ever too.
I don't want to sound crazy, but inxs is criminally underrated. They made some really really good music that sounds like no one else. To that end, I'm a huge fan of bands that are enjoyable but don't sound like anyone before or since. Gnr, rage, inxs from older days...the national, Bon iver, arcade fire. My taste isn't esoteric but rather focuses on things I've never heard before because I was obsessed with that - and woefully unsuccessful during my 20 year music career. So, uh, listen to some INXS without remembering the suicide or their MTV success. You will probably like it.

I like INXS as well. They have a groovy, sexy feel. I was merely using them as an alternative sound that some people flock to in droves but otherwise would never be consider the GOAT. Radiohead fans are just delusional in their fandom. They have a cool sound for what they do but they are not the be all end all of music.

Not the version I was mentioning.
IT's really not that bad. In fact, it's pretty good. Mustaine's voice is what it is but it's not like Johnny Rotten was some great lyricist.

I think Thom Yorke had more talent in his pinkie than Rose had in his entire body, but it's a moot point. Comparing RH and GNR is like comparing apples and oranges, they are completely different genres, and don't belong in the same conversation.

While Appetite was a classic album, the breadth of Radiohead's work was far more impressive. WTF did GNR do afterwards?

Appetite might have been a far more popular album, but I'd argue that Love and Sonic Temple by the Cult were better from beginning to end. The Cult are still putting out good to great albums as well. I'd recommend anyone that liked the Cult to check out Astbury and Boris's project BXI

Lol at Achtung Baby not being a rock album. Also, GnR cant carry Radiohead's jock, but i guess their body of work isn't "rock" as it would e defined around here.

Not even the best album of 1987.The Joshua Tree is a better album.
Joshua Tree is a nice album. AFD was lightning in a bottle and will never be matched.
The performances hold up very well. The material, not as much.
It holds up as much as songs from the 20s about prohibition, songs from the 60's about peace and love. It's a perfect snapshot of the scene and time.
Too much filler. The album has some epic tracks, but too much of it is hair band period piece music. The Joshua Tree is timeless. Could be released today, if Bono still had the range to pull it off which, understandably, he no longer does. But, bang on dudes! Oh, and the Lost Boys still rules!

Better? Hmmm dunno if anything is better. Some I like equally as much: aenima, ten, who's next, bleach, blood/sugar///.. Different type of music but equally moving? Ok computer, fashion nugget, no code, rubber soul, californication. Cool topic.

All true. U2 isn't rock in the sense of their music being made to get drunk or laid to, like GNR's s, but it is certainly rock. As for Radiohead, yeah, they blow GNR out of the water when it comes to creativity, artistry, relevance and, yes, influence, but I get that a lot of people often just want music to rock out to, as opposed to music that is deep and features many layers. GNR is crank it up and rock out music; Radiohead is not. Like was said, it's apples and oranges.

Agreed. I listened to some of it today, to reacquaint myself with some of the lesser known tunes, and stuff like You're Crazy, Anything Goes and Thing About You are run of the mill average trashy rock songs. And I agree with the earlier comment that My Michelle is really good until that dud of a chorus.

Guys, rock is a much broader category than bands that may induce a mosh pit. Rock music has seemingly countless subgenres within it. But U2 and Radiohead (especially the Bends and OK Computer) are most definitely in the "rock" category. GnR is definitely more hard rock than U2 and Radiohead, but all 3 are absolutely within the "Rock" genre. If you want to break this out to "name a better hard rock album since Appetite, then you are right, U2 and Radiohead do not belong in the conversation.

I posted a few albums I think are better, but I wholeheartedly disagree that Appetite has too much filler. It is a pretty tight album, imo and one of the reasons that it is great.

Which songs are filler? You might be able to make an argument that Think About You doesn't fit in but that doesn't make it filler. It has the best melodies of the record outside SCOM and shows exactly how good a formulaic hair-metal song can be. Musically it's a song that's been written and rehashed by Poison 100 times, but it's very clearly a GNR song. And "You're Crazy" may not be a favorite of most people, but it's been on two different records and was a staple of the live show for a long time.Appetite could be released today only I imagine it might have an even more profound influence since most rock stars are sissies now - if 1987 era GNR was wandering around on drugs and destroying things they might be more popular then ever. I love Joshua Tree (top 10 album ever IMO).

Jesus... as a radiohead fan I'm starting to get embarassed. Why must you nerds get up in arms as soon as anyone gives credit to another muscian other than Thom Yorke? He's brilliant... so are other folks. Axl wasn't brilliant... but GNR rocked harder than anyone in the biz for a good few years. THAT is what this thread is about. You wanna talk about your new Thom Yorke kneepads? Awesome... this aint the thread for it. I've seen both bands live multiple times. Thom Yorke ain't rock and roll. Move along.

Yes. I SPECIFICALLY clarified "ROCK AND ROLL" (as in the rough around the edges, drug addled, falling apart at any moment genre)....and went on to clarify it as "Straight-Out Rock albums". Yes, if you want to narrow down "Greatest Rock Album" and include everything they file under Rock at Tower Records (which is 70% of all music released) then sure... but that's NOT what this thread is about and I wish the art rock nerds would quit sissying this place up.
