GnR : Appetite For Destruction (1 Viewer)

Also, on another note - I looked at GnR on allmusic and these are the bands they listed as "similar artists" (proving more it's really hard to categorize music/ rock)

* Pantera
Cowboys from Hell or Vulgar Display of Power could probably be in the conversationIt doesnt get much more balls to the wall while still maintaining melody as those albums

Im thinking Guns n Roses are not eligible because they were pretty much glam rock
omg big red xRead Slash's autobiog, and it's pretty clear how much the Guns guys HATED the likes of Poison and Motley Crue and thought they were power dooshes. They despised glam.

And yet they looked very glam rock-ish in their first video. They had big hair JUST like the guys in Poison and Motley Crue did. Slash's comments probably stems from some kind of "we were better than that" attitude, when, really, they were more hair metal-ish (in regards to their look at the time) than they would ever care to admit (albeit not as cheesy as the majority of the hair metal bands at the time).

 That also goes back to my point about how they stood out at the time. In the first video or so, Axel's hair was a bit teased up like the other hair bands. After awhile they got settled down in that department (probably to further separate from the other bands). The music was harder than the other bands, so I think they decided to go on that and not the "look" of the time.

I always thought the only reason Axl had teased hair in the first video was to fit into the story of the video. His look was the same (no teased hair ) in the other two videos off that album.

hmmmmYou might be right. To the untrained eye, without hearing the music you still would probably put them in that class of rock just by seeing a picture. There looks to be some Aquanet in use for that picture.

I think you have to look at it relatively. Compare this pic to a contemporary of Motley Crue or Poison. While looking back, this picture looks glam, compared to the glam of the day, they look stripped down. Also, I'm not sure I totally hold against them that their first video, and some early photo shoots don't totally capture their essence. I don't know their history perfectly, but I suspect their marketing was somewhat in the hands of managers and record companies. But I really don't know.

real metal dudes

It's not better than AFD but the Metallica Black album is the only other album that I listen to regularly. After that it's just single tracks from Nirvana, etc.

another vote for cowboys from hell / vulgar display of power being in the discussion. neither as good as AfD in my mind, but in the discussion nonetheless.

I'll probably take a lot of crap for this, but here it goes -

If Marilyn Manson didn't lock himself into such a specific darkhorse of a genre, both Anti-Christ Superstar and Holywood would get far more critical acclaim.

In particular, Anti-Christ Superstar is amazing. The songs rock hard, and the lyrics and imagery are both scathing and precise. Someone posted a snippet that said Axel Rose "lived" AFD; I would certainly say this about Manson for Anti-Christ Superstar. Not because of his make-up and circus celebrity act outside the album, I'm talking within the music itself. You feel it.

But, again, the guy kills himself with his sideshow act outside the music. Columbine also doesn't help (though it had nothing to do with him), and his music since Holywood has been total crap.

But I would certainly throw Anti-Christ Superstar into the conversation with Rage Against the Machine, And Justice for All... and Appetite for Destruction.

Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic is there too, though I feel the RHCP are such a unique sound onto their themselves that it's hard to compare them to pure hard rock bands listed above. BSSM certainly tops the list of best albums in the last 25 years though. Every song is incredible and flows right into the next.

What about Metallica's newest album "Death Magnetic"? There were quite a few FBGs raving about it in the FFA. I've seen 4 star reviews for it, people saying its the best since the pre-black days. Is it possibly the best rock album since AfD? Or is it just too new to really consider?

I could probably name at least 100, but I listen to a crapload of music, the majority of which isn't well-known or mainstream.

Besides, I have never thought GnR was that great (one of the most overrated bands ever), and while AFD is a good record, I think it is highly overrated. It is one of those albums that casual music fans eat up, but hardcore music fans seldom rate too highly. I hope that didn't sound elitist. :lmao:

Also, since you asked to list at least one album since that is better, I will go with an obvious choice, and one that many probably are familiar with:

Radiohead - OK Computer
While you were busy making two trips to load your music ego into the door you missed a key component to the debate that was in the header as well as the first post. :lmao: I love Radiohead. Have seen them several times live. Own everything that they released and while I agree OK Computer is a phenomenal album (though IMO Overrated and not their best), I must say it is in no way shape or form a ROCK album.

Please try again.

We're talking about albums that capture the essence of Rock & Roll.... that drug addled, balls to the wall, falling apart at the seams essence that GnR captured perfectly.
Okay, my bad. How about I start with The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters? That is pure straight ahead rock and roll.
Don't bother him with such trivialities. He's hardcore, he listens to a crapload.

Can you be troubled to educate us unwashed, ignorant masses with a few of these 100? Thx.
Why? So everyone can disagree and continue blowing Guns N' Roses left and right? Nah. Besides, most of them admittedly would not fall under the "straight ahead rock and roll" banner that [icon] is looking for. If you persist, I can make you a nice little list, but I really do not want to derail this thread. :lmao:
Just give us 5.

Great album, but not Appetite great.
I like Ten better than AFD.
You're insane.
AFD is bubblegum rock at its worst, Its the LA version of Slippery When Wet. Ten outclasses AFD any day of the week. Pearl Jam are serious muscians. GnR act like little beyotches on the rag. My wife liked GnR... she also liked The Go Go's, Bananarama, and Wham.
 :lmao: :lmao: The only album I've heard mentioned in this thread that is even close to AFD is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. And AFD is slightly better because it's more compact.
Why is that funny? Why do laugh? Did you laugh at Axle when he wore his leather jacket and bicycle shorts?Blood Sugar is superior to AFD in every way. Ten pioneered a whole new sound in rock and roll. AFD is the 1987 version of arena rock.
The first sentence I laughed with you, the second one I laughed at you.

I also think Ten is a great album but I'm not sure it belongs in the same conversation with these other two. A conversation about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, and Alice in Chains would be interesting.
I don't really think they are in the same league as Nirvana, PJ and AIC. I'd argue that AIC is the best band out of those 4, they didn't rely on any one album like Nirvana and especially PJ did.I'd rank the Seattle/grunge era bands:

AIC

Nirvana

Sceaming Trees

Soundgarden

Pearl Jam
Huh? You do realize Pearl Jam still regularly sells out 25,000 seat arenas all over the world, right?
I saw them a couple months back. Great show, the whole place lost their minds when they played the opening chords of "Arms Wide Open."

Big red X. Vis-a-vis Creed, hey... imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

either Sublime album
Ban yourself.(edited for profanity)
Seriously
My wife and I were walking home from the gym today and having a conversation about what the worst band in history was. I couldn't come up with anyone worse than Sublime.
Sugar Ray.
I don't want to take anything away from how bad Sugar Ray is, but I think Sublime beats them in the end. Limp Bizkit is also pretty close IMO.

Back-to-back-to-back, actually. Cemetary Gates and Cowboys from Hell are from 'Cowboys From Hell'; Hollow and A New Level are from "Vulgar Display of Power", and 5 Minutes Alone is from "Far Beyond Driven."

what so bad about Sublime?
:goodposting:I thought of a "straight-ahead" rock album that I would put in the same category as AFD, although it's nowhere near as well-known, but I'd suggest it to anyone who likes AFD. Suicide Invoice by the Hot Snakes.

Nonsense. Axl's teased hair was massive in the Welcome to the Jungle video

Do the Black Keys belong in the conversation? Not sure which album I like best.
:goodposting: They are far better than a lot of the garbage being mentioned here, especially the soft pop electronica stuff. I'm not sure which one I like the best myself, though I'm pretty partial to Thickfreakness.

Sugar Ray.
Jonas BrothersLimp BizkitAny of the Motley Crue spinoffs
The Jonas Bros. don't really count as a rock band. And even if you do want to count them, they're basically a non-entity IMO. I've heard a couple of their songs recently when the children of the hosts of a dinner party put on an impromptu dance performance, and I honestly don't remember anything about them. Limp Bizkit is a definite contender for the crown, and easily in the bottom 5.

Thanks to this thread, AFD inspired my morning run

Pretty much downloading a crapload of great albums I forgot about thanks to this thread

OK Computer IS a rock album, but just not a hard rock album. I think it is the best rock record of the last twenty-five years, but just resides in a different place than AFD.

Dirt is a dark horse that I've only recently gone back and discovered. Truly an unbelievable album.

At the end of the day, however, the only two REAL challengers to AFD for the hard rock crown are Ten and Nevermind.
